During the years I lived in Japan I always went to Kyoto during Sakura season. But, in my opinion, even better than Kyoto is Hikone-shi, just a 50 minute train ride northeast on the Biwako line. They have an original castle with 2 moats and INCREDIBLE Sakura along the moats and stone walls. With black and white swans in the moats. MUCH less crowded than the kyoto spots and they bloom a week or two after Kyoto's so visiting is a great way to prolong the season. Go behind the castle, between the moat and Jr high school for a very quiet experience. They also do a light up at night and when the air is still the Sakura reflects in the moat.

Precautions Do not break branches of cherry trees. Cherry trees are susceptible to bacterial infection from wounds if damaged. Some facilities prohibit visitors from touching cherry trees. (This is because there have been a series of cases of spectators breaking branches or climbing trees and damaging the trunks.)

When I was a kid, my parents took me to Zouheikyoku (造幣局) in Osaka. One of the most magnificent spots for Hanami for sure. There is another spot you can try... it's between Osaka and Nara off of Route 163, called Iimorireien (飯盛霊園). It's a cemetery, but they have many sakura for good hanami spots.

Scuba diving is also popular among Japanese people in connection with seaweed regeneration activities.

Whenever I think about wanting to visit Japan, it's during the Sakura season I really would like to visit. But as someone who REALLY isn't a fan of crowds, I've always been worried that an already crowded Japan seems to get even worse during this time of the year so it's great to see that even if some of the places you visited was obviously crowded there was also some quieter places to enjoy the Sakura.

  • @Spread_Hope_Like_Fire

I suggest you call somei-yoshino(染井吉野) cherry in stead of yoshino cherry tree. The name of YoshIno(吉野) has nothing to do with Mt Yoshino(吉野山) of Nara Pref. , where cherry blossoms so famous throughout the mountain. Therefore, the naming of Yoshino cherry would be confused with the cherry blossoms in Mt Yoshino. Somei-yoshino is a hybrid of Edohigan(江戸彼岸) cherry and Oshima-sakura(大島桜) cherry, cross-bred in Edo period. Thereafter, they are planted all over Japan and now become the most popular bred.

I've been to several of these locations. Very nostalgic for me. I'm surprised you didn't cover Kiyomizu-dera on this trip. It's good for both daytime and nighttime blossom viewing, but their light-up at night is really beautiful. They also do a light-up for maple leaves in the autumn. It is pretty crowded, though. The places you went seemed to have a reasonably comfortable crowd level. I love that weeping cherry tree at Maruyama Park. I've been there several times, both during and outside of cherry blossom season. If I understand correctly, even though the Emperor now resides in Tokyo, the Imperial Palace in Kyoto is still one of the Imperial residences and is ready to receive him whenever he wishes to visit Kyoto. My wife and I got married during cherry blossom season in a Shinto ceremony at Nashinoki-Jinja, just off the Imperial Palace grounds. It's a beautiful little rustic Shinto shrine. It was early April and the cherry trees were in peak bloom. We couldn't have asked for better conditions! I hope you come back to Kyoto for the Obon festival with the burning Daimonji on the mountainside. It's so beautiful! The music selections for today's video were so good! I'd love to know what it was.

I asked the driver for recommendations for hanami and he pointed to the shrine's entrance as we passed by. There wasn't a fee then (2019?) and the place was packed. There were picnic tables and restaurants (no food trucks) set up in the back. It was way more crazy and had a fun vibe. It wasn't as crowded as Maruyama Park though.

It's been years since I've seen the sakura in person. I'm glad it's blossoming, and people are getting to see it. Also loving the vlogs too.

Nice, chill blog after all the excitement of Chris and Connors Cyclathon. Also, it's so nice to see that the philosopher's path hasn't changed that much in 10 years (apart from being so crowded!). Loved Sakura season? Miss it so much!
