My fav tidbit is that in Chinese, Shifu means master and Oogway means turtle. So their names are literally Master Master and Master Turtle.

OH MY GOD.... Po literally got LAUNCHED into being the dragon warrior by fire works... And fire works are what set him down the path because of the peacock... I'm screaming. I just put that together.

The best out of the whole series imo

As one of the interns from Kung Fu Panda 4, I’m so excited for this episode. I loved the original trilogy (esp the second one that was such an amazing sequel), and working on the fourth was wild and crazy and it’s a great fourth

Just here to say Dreamworks films are so underrated and not talked about enough: Kung Fu Panda, Shrek, Road to El Dorado, Puss in Boots, etc. I think Dreamworks month should be a thing! ALSO if you do another Dreamwork movie, please PLEASE do Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron. Hands down the best Dreamworks movie and the soundtrack is Hans Zimmer AND Bryan Adams. Matt Damon is the lead voice on the film. It's stunning and the story keeps you hooked.

Spirit was my absolute FAVOURITE film as a child. The story and soundtrack is incredible. Rewatched it a couple of years ago, probably about 20 years after I saw it for the first time, and it completely held up for me 😊

Yeah, I'm part Chinese and I went into this expecting disappointment because of how hand-wavy Mulan was with Disney with some of the details and I was blown away because Kung-fu Panda is so legit. Like zither music and like the painting aesthetics and everything is just like...wow Dreamworks knows.

This is my favorite episode of this podcast ever and I'm 5min in. I love this. I love Kung Fu Panda sooooo fucking much. Thank you. (The 4th movie was ass. We don't talk about that...) I love Kung fu panda 1-3 and I'm so glad you all got together and gave it the love and flowers it deserves. Skidoosh.

Finally some much deserved appreciation for Kung Fu Panda! It’s my dad’s favorite movie series of all time. We are so hyped for the 4th!

There’s concept art from the first KFP from 2001 aka SEVEN YEARS PRIOR TO THE RELEASE. They did their mf RESEARCH and developed the shit outta the animation and story and how to represent the culture and action sequences

There is even more supplementary lore for the Furious Five and even a few of the background kung fu masters in several animated specials that DreamWorks released as part of their DVD extras; they have been released as package features that are available on Netflix every once in a while, but I’d honestly say they’re worth your time if the lore intrigues you.

Do y'all think Avatar the Last Airbender had any effect on the success of this movie? Season two (arguably the best season) of ATLA ended 2 years before Kung Fu Panda, and season three came out a month after it's release. Also, please bring David back!

Kung Fu Panda is such a great franchise. Just saw the 4th one and it was great. We loved it.

Most actors love doing voice over work because they often get to play characters that are different from their usual roles. Also, they don't need to spend hours on makeup, hair, costumes, etc. They usual have a good time doing voice over.

Loving the JB praise- I have been facinated by his talent since High Fidelity- he brings so much soul, and play to what i does. And loved this episode with deep dive. I never thought to much about why, but I do also watch KFP all the time as a comfort movie

You inspired me to go back and watch this movie again for the umpteenth time. Jack Black is perfect as Po and we get his singing in the credits song, too, while rolling animation through the END. DreamWorks really elevated with this movie. Animation is ART. Just watch any Studio Ghibli movie and it cannot be denied. If you can watch Grave Of The Fireflies without ugly crying and not see it's beauty you must be cut off from your emotions. Zach, you have to watch 2 and 3. They're such a great continuation of Po's journey.

To me this movie is perfect in every way except one. Why does food have to be Po's ultimate mean to become a good warrior? The tendency to associate plus size character with food is just personally triggering to me. It otherwise has so many beautiful messages, even those of body-positivity, but this is the one thing I can't get over. Po has dreams, ambitions and persevarence, he loves his family, admires his heroes and gradually gains a sense of purpose and destiny. It would be wonderful if that would be enough motivation for him to overcome prejudice along with his own struggles and challenges.

You gotta do How to Train Your Dragon! Its just a perfect movie with the best soundtrack of all time!!

I saw both Kung Fu Panda 1 & 2 in theaters and I will say especially for Kung Fu Panda 2 seeing it in theaters was amazing. I would put KFP2 up there with the amazing sequel category.

This franchise definitely took a lot of elements from classic kung fu Chinese cinema from the 70s/80s/90s. If you’re bored, watch “Drunken Master,” one of Jackie Chan’s earlier works. Very funny! A personal favorite of mine is Swordsman 2 starring Jet Li and Brigitte Lin - it’s has trans-themes in it (probably why I was so into it as a kid). Honestly, there’s so many good, classic kung fu movies 🤪

One of my favorite pieces of kung fu panda content is a short that came out after the first movie called “secrets of the furious five,” it’s a 2-D animated short film that deeply explores the back stories of all five of the furious five and how they were discovered by either Oogway or Shifu.
