KT Tape: Distal Posterior Tibial Tendonitis

The posterior tibial tendon serves as one of the most important supporting structures for the foot. It runs behind the ankle bone on the inside of the foot, across the instep, and connects to the bottom of the foot. It is crucial in the function of walking and running and helps to build the arch of the foot. A condition called Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction (PTTD) is a breakdown or change in this tendon that causes flat feet.
Irritation and overuse can cause the area behind the ankle bone to become inflamed and painful. Other symptoms of tendonitis in this tendon are pain at the instep, swelling along the tendon, general weakness in the ankle, or flattened feet. Knots can form in the tendon due to scar tissue and have the possibility of eventually rupturing. This makes it very important to relieve the stress and cause of inflammation as soon as possible.
Standing, walking, or running for long periods of time, degeneration of the tendon due to age, obesity, poor nutrition, traumatic injury, and severe overuse can all contribute to problems with this tendon. Rest, massage, anti-inflammatory medication, and arch supports are non-surgical treatments used to help relieve the stress and continued degradation of the tendon.
KT Tape provides much needed support and relief for the tendon. Increased blood flow to the area will help to provide nutrients and healing agents to the inflamed areas, as well as help to "cool" them down. During the healing process KT Tape will relieve the inevitable stress most individuals continue to put on their feet. Recovery times can be dramatically reduced and compensation injuries can be avoided when the pain relief is combined with support.

Thank you. My podiatrist taped my foot last week and said I could continue to tape it as needed, this is the technique she used (unlike the other ones I found online), it has made such a difference as most of the time I am pain free now. Really appreciate you sharing this technique

You can use the compression as well if you'd like but it will negate the lifting effect of the tape which is one of the main benefits. I would recommend trying the tape alone during some light activity to see how much support it gives you. Then you can add other treatments if you feel they're needed.

This is neat. I'm suffering from PTTD. Combination of flat size 12 feet and hiking in wrong footware. Doing the instucted excercises, calf strenthing, stretching and isolated thunb presure/message up and down the whole tendon has really helped but im definitely giving this a try. I have an ankle brace but this seems to really aim more directly at the issue.

This is my second time dealing with this injury, but this time I know what it is. The day after a run where I knew I was going to have problems, I felt the arch pain again, so I looked this up, took a couple of days off running, taped it up right away, and the pain has all ready subsided substantially. Just re-taped this morning, and walking around without the tape before I retaped felt much better, but to be safe, I want to give it a little longer taped up.

Step 1: Shave your legs and feel less masculine (if male) Step 2: Apply tape, get tape stuck on fingers Step 3: Apply tape incorrectly Step 4: Apply tape correctly or repeat Step 3 Step 5: Run with tape on Step 6: Tape falls immediately off due to sweat, weather Step 7: Rip off tape and throw in trash Repeat

+hoxymoron Step 1 sucks.... I know. My recommendation would be to try the no-name brands of the tape, they've worked better for me. The "KT" brand ALWAYS comes right off - I just use the CVS or Right Aid brand and haven't had that same problem which is obviously counter-intuitive. Hope that helps.

Just applied my first KT tape for my recent diagnosis of PTT using this video. Used three strips. I usually run with compression socks and (sometimes) an ankle support. Is it overkill to still either compression socks or ankle support brace?

I am a wildland firefighter and a few weeks ago I was running and I must have pushed myself too hard and the inside of my feet and ankles started killing me. I start work in 5 weeks and cannot afford to take anymore time off training. I hiked today and the ankle pain came back pretty hard. going to try this and hope it works, and im just hoping my feet are sore and not injured.

Great! I've been dealing with this for the last few weeks. I've been trying low dye taping for some extra arch support during normal daily activities, but I think I'll try this too. Pain seems to come and go. Hopefully I can get rid of this before too long.

He's not measuring, these are precut pieces that they produce. I don't think they make a noncut roll, so they have no reason to tell you how long. Google the measurements for KT tape!

I have problems with my anterior tibialis. How should I tape for that? I even had to take a tarsal metatarsal fusion in my left foot because of the severity and now having same problem in my right foot and need to tape it. I also have a bone spur on the top of my foot between the first and second metatarsal in the middle of my foot. Caused from the awkward way I have to walk when my anterior tibialis flares up. Please help. Thank you!

Man, you guys have some super tape for these videos or something. I love kt tape but the adhesive is awful! I have an horrible time getting it to stick to my skin let alone stick to the backside of the tape. I seems like it sticks perfectly in these videos but mine start to peel as I'm laying them down over the tape. I've called and asked about why the adhesive doesn't seem to be working and I was told that if the tape is stored or transported in heat, the adhesive weakens by the time the tape is purchased and used. If this is the case, climate controlled shipping and storage should be used. The last 4 rolls I've purchased, the tape will not last even a full day and I'm using the pro stuff.

Why is there no stretch on the tape as there is usually on all other injuries???

  • @krbr

    @krbr

+Jean Hill He did mention adding a third tape with stretch if the 2x tapes do not provide relief. I haven't yet tried it myself, but I imagine that the standard 2x tapes provide ample support and relief. Perhaps the third tape is for those who have more acute pain and need supportive relief. This injury isn't one that typically needs supportive relief unless it's been going on for quite some time -- in which case I certainly hope auxiliary treatment has been implemented in the meantime (rest and ice promptly after exercise).
