Dick McDonald mentioned in his final interview before his death (available on Amazon Prime) that he purchased a large portion of shares in the McDonald’s corporation shortly after selling out, and that he made “a lot of money” from this in the years since. Also, this movie is inaccurate about the royalties: Dick and Mack actually gave Kroc a choice - either he gave them $1m both up front, OR he agreed to a perpetual 0.5% royalty deal (half of what they ask for in the movie). It was difficult for Kroc, but he was able to sum up the $2m to buy them out to avoid the royalty deal. Don’t be fooled by the movie - in real life the McDonald brothers benefitted well from Kroc's success. They weren’t fools. The only travesty was that Kroc erased them from the history of McDonald's, claiming himself to be the founder. It was only after his death in the 80s that Dick and Mack were re-recognised as the true founders. PS. For the record, if a handshake deal is witnessed in the presence of attorneys, and a written follow-up made, it is just as legally binding as a signed contract. So assuming the handshake deal was even real, Kroc would not have been able to renege on it. Hence why he had to buy them out to avoid a perpetual royalty deal.

It was inevitable. If not for Crock, someone else would have quickly realized the potential and copied their design...Except for claiming to be the "founder", (for which, they were eventually given credit), it was the best deal they could have received @ the time...The movie was also wrong about the royalties; They had a choice, and took the cash over the royalties; Then, bought stock in the company. All in all, they made out better than Crock, since all his shares were sold after his death, and the proceeds donated to charity.

Honestly, how can you honorably blame a restaurant for the state of people’s bodies? Its not the McDonald’s fault that people are choosing to eat there. You and you alone are responsible for your own body and health. By the way, a meal at McDonalds costs roughly $6-8 dollars. While a nice organic salad and a gallon of water costs less than $6 after tax at my local grocery store. So people clearly have the choice to eat healthier and save a little money while doing so.

The thing I appreciate about this movie is that while they portray Ray Kroc to be the villain (and in many aspects, he is), they leave the door open to interpretation. Was Ray Kroc really that brutal of a business man? Or did the McDonald brothers just enrage him to that point that he felt the need to go around them? All the while he was expanding the brand of McDonald's, they were along with him for the ride but they refused to give him any room to help the franchisees (and therefore the brothers) make more money. What would the story of McDonald's be had the brothers listened to Ray about menu advertisements? About instant milkshake mix and cutting out the freezer costs? About allowing Ray to get a small percentage more of the pie? Was Ray Kroc a ruthless business man or did he just have more vision for what McDonald's could really become?

In the movie, and I'm going just on that for now because I haven't done any other research, but in the movie Kroc offers them a blank check of sorts, asks them what they will take. He then agrees verbally to 1%. Of course, in the meeting with the lawyers, he says no, and all parties knew (discussed earlier) that the brothers don't have the $ to fight. Now, IRL *if* Kroc said hey, invest it, and in fact I've heard they did invest some, great. But the fact remains that he went back on his word. Plus, I'm also taking into account the fact that he cheated and left his wife for someone else who was also married. These combined factors put him pretty low in my view. However, I love the fact that after he died, his wife gave away the tons of money to different causes, one of them npr.

If they were smart they could have had continuing use of their name and logo as part of their deal and future acknowledgement that their restaurant is the official McDonald's flagship with 100% control. If you don't want it as a franchise at least secure your original restaurant's future and not risk having another built across the street to run you out of business.

Ray Kroc did all the work building McDonald’s into a franchise. Ray Kroc bought them out for what would be 23 million dollars today, where they had one shop prior. Ray Kroc turned there name into something everyone in the world knows. He’s seen as the villain, over some rumor he offered them a 1% royalty, which if true, they were morons for not getting in the contract. Ray Kroc is the hero to this story, because he turned a billion dollar idea into multi billion dollar company. The McDonald’s Bros stayed in San Bernardino when Ray Kroc built an empire, making no money for years.
