Actually McDonalds used powdered milkshakes for a very long time and they always had milkshakes. He tried to convince the McDonald brothers to use it in all the stores, but they said ice cream only, so he used the powder anyway. Now they use soft serve ice cream machines, so they still do not use real ice cream.

The McDonalds brothers actually said Ray Kroc made them millionaires and they were happy about that. Becoming a millionaire in the 60s is the equivalent of over 10 million dollars today. I know plenty of people that would sell their restaurant for 20 million after taxes and never look back.

One of them got obscenely wealthy since he put most of the million dollar post tax payout for selling the McDonald's trademark (they sold the trademark since that's all they had that Kroc wanted) back into McDonald's Corporation stocks. That was right as McDonald's was taking off so his stocks skyrocketed in price as McDonald's got massive... the handshake deal was bullshit & both sides knew it was bullshit when they signed, the brothers just wanted a sop to their ego even if they knew that they were never going to get paid from it (and that 1% royalties on the trademark was an insane ask to begin with.)

That's the movie... in reality Kroc had to take out a second mortgage on his house to buy out the guy that the McDonald's Brothers had already sold the Midwest franchising rights to before they sold them to Kroc as well. The movie straight up ignored how badly the McDonald's Brothers had fucked over Kroc first... causing him to be on the brink of bankruptcy & the movie also glosses over the numerous guys that the McDonald's Brothers had already driven into bankruptcy through failed franchising attempts before Kroc finally figured out how to do it successfully.

@johnjeffreys6440 I was taught at Hamburger University when going through manager training as a teenager over 20 years ago... that basically the handshake deal was agreed to by Kroc to close the deal but he never meant to follow through for a second (and the McDonald's Brothers were painted as kind of naive for believing that he would & arrogant for even asking... but that combination of naivete & arrogance is why they never succeeded in the first place.) Kroc was a great man... warts and all, the McDonald's Brothers were definitely painted in the most glowing way possible in this movie hiding their own warts and shortcomings. Kroc definitely fucked them over the "handshake deal" but it wasn't serious to anyone involved except them & they had previously fucked Kroc over very badly almost driving him into bankruptcy and losing his house.

Ray Kroc became frustrated with the McDonald brothers' {Richard & Maurice} desire to maintain a small number of restaurants. The brothers also consistently told Kroc he could not make changes to things such as the original blueprint. Kroc eventually decided he wanted control of the company entirely, Kroc bought the company in 1961 for $2.7 million, calculated so as to ensure each brother received $1 million after taxes. Speaking to someone about the buyout, Richard McDonald reportedly said that he had no regrets.

That said, Kroc was certainly the better businessman. As I understand it, in reality, there was no ill-will between them. Dick claimed in an interview that he didn't feel that Kroc ripped them off. Title is misleading, he not only made them money with his franchising of their store models, but he paid them WHAT THEY ASKED, when he approached them about buying them out. Also they were considering retiring anyway so they took up his offer. If anything the McDonald's brothers kind of screwed Ray by withholding the original San Bernidino location which he assume was part of their agreement when they had promised it to their employees. Yes Ray Kroc did blow up himself over time and his self-proclaimed title of 'The Founder' is misleading as yes, he did found the McDonald's corporation and set up the business models the company uses today, the speedy-system and the original concept was founded by the McDonald's brothers. A later CEO of the company (one he knew Ray Kroc himself) lamented the 'Founder business' was convoluted since 'there was plenty of acclaim to go around'. While a good movie, at times The Founder often portrays Ray in a more negative light than was true. Yes he was a naracisst at times, and a work-aholic, and made some choices in private and business that are frowned upon, but ultimately he was a decent man who wanted his slice of the American dream and he got it, and not only made himself wealthy, but plenty of others who got to enjoy the ride with him. Even the McDonald's brothers got their dream of being millionaires as they vowed to their own parents thanks to Ray pushing the McDonald's brand beyond what Mac and Dick could do on their own, and Dick himself who reported had the biggest animostity of the two brothers with Ray, commented there was no bad blood and he even considered Ray a friend.

Ray Kroc was obsessed with becoming rich. So much so that he found every loophole to make that happen because he wanted it all! I am certain that greedy businessmen all over the world will see him as a hero and a smart businessman. The interesting part is that the businessmen that I know of... don't have any friends. Even their own families don't have much to do with them. Everything with them is all show. The reality is that they are hollow inside. Successful business may make you rich financially, but it leaves your morally bankrupt if your obsession is greed! I prefer being with people who give back and appreciate, not because they need to, but because they want to! Someone like Taylor Swift as opposed to Donald Trump.

In real life they were happy with the deal. A million dollars back then is a lot of money. The movie makes the situation more adversarial because that's more entertaining and I'm glad they did. A lot of films that are truer to life are incredibly bland.

8:05 is kind of funny. To this day coca-cola and mcdonalds are maybe the biggest corporate partnership in the world. Coke makes 75 gallon tanks of syrup ONLY for mcdonalds. (its also a slighty more concentrated syrup so that the coke is still just as good as the ice melts in your cup) I had to deliver 3 of them today. Pain in my ass as it has to be pumped from my tank into their tank with a big heavy 100ft tangled hose and another 100ft of Co2 hose that uses their Co2 sytem to push the coke from my tank into their tank.

The movie desperately wants us to see the brothers as the good guys and ray as scum, but the fact is the brothers didnt agree to an increase in profit share which was very reasonable and maybe ray wouldnt have got to the bank and we wouldnt have this monstrosity that we have today ( g anted kfc would still take its place, so yeah)

The McDonalds brothers SOLD their interest for a couple of million each (like worth 10 mil today) they did just fine and they never wanted to be a part of a large franchising operation anyways…the movie is factually incorrect on so many levels it’s ridiculous…Ray NEVER STOPPED SELLING MIXERS…he wanted to grow the McDonalds franchise to sell more mixers (initially) …truth is the McDonald brothers wanted to retire and very much liked the idea of selling to Ray …Ray even offered to give them part of the reality division but they declined because of tax reasons…there only parting request was that the McDonalds name not be changed (yes Ray wasn’t the advocate for keeping the name, all he cared about was the logistics behind the company) they took a very generous buy out and priced to where they wouldn’t sacrifice what they wanted in taxes…😊most of what’s depicted is very exaggerated at best or a complete Hollywood fabrication

My mom would take me & my brother's to the Des Plains McDonald's on 27th Street from Chicago just for the hamburgers & fries and shakes! Of course Shakes were for adults only! Especially because they were the most expensive item you could buy at that time 35¢, hamburgers 15¢, cheeseburgers 20¢? Drinks only two sizes small & large 15¢ & 25¢ and fries one size 15¢ you could feed all four of us for under $3 bucks! I believe that's why my mom moved us out to Des Plains in the 60's just because of the McDonald's later they had stores in Chicago & Elgin Illinois my mom's favorite trick was to order a hamburger with no onions! I knew she liked onions but she told me! That way you always got a hot Hamburger! Later on I grew up in Elgin Illinois at LHFC on 1212 Larkin Ave! And Bear Family open a store across the street from the Larkin HS on Larkin Ave in 1969? At the Grand Opening they had Gale Sayers there he was rehabbing his knee but the Bears gave all the kids From Larkin Home free burgers, fries & shakes and we all took a picture with Gale afterwards he stopped the Home all the Kids went crazy! I grew up eating McDonald's food and still do! If it's hot and the fries aren't dead! I'll put their fast food up against any other fast food! They still have the best tasting fries! Damn I'm old! Great Bio about ex -shake machine salesman Ray Kroc "1955" also met the original Ronald McDonald!

Ray Kroc was an ahole (based on clips of him I've seen, not the movie) but the reality is without him, these two brothers would have run their single burger joint very successfully until they retired or died and there would be no huge McDs brand today. As it is, they sold their name for a small fortune, some of which they invested in McDs shares and did very well indeed.

Kroc going to the franchisee and complaining about the quality of the experience is exactly what is wrong with going franchise. One restaurant can be super perfect and then the one a few blocks down the road will absolutely suck. That one experience can make someone swear off the entire franchise all together. Kudos to him for at least trying to keep it the same experience across the board. As big as McDonalds is now that is an impossible feat.
