"Better Call Saul" recap: He wasn't always Saul Goodman, ace attorney for chemist-turned-meth dealer Walter White. Six years before he begins to represent Albuquerque's most notorious criminal, Goodman is Jimmy McGill, a small-time attorney hustling to make a name for himself. He's a forceful champion for his low-income clients, an underdog whose morals and ambitions often clash. Jimmy works with private eye Mike Ehrmantraut, a former Philadelphia cop and recent transplant to the Southwest. Mike has a specialized skill set -- he's a "fixer" of sticky situations -- that Jimmy soon learns to appreciate.

Mike being a Vietnam vet holds his character together so well in both breaking bad and better call saul, the man has serious skills in deception and weapon handling which feeds his ability to perform crime and punishment in equal measure while under pressure, truly one of the best written characters in a TV show for a very long time.

Criminal, this guy put on a more convincing performance than any A-List actor out there. I’m glad he got a shot with a hit show and that so many people appreciate his dedication. The first scene alone demonstrates just how patient and careful he is in the execution of his plans. He had no interest in shooting Hector’s men, but also didn’t want them to be too alerted when he fired off his rifle at the shoe with cocaine inside. He had to fire off enough shots to have them let their guard down by the time he got the cocaine to sprinkle onto the truck. Quite the expert at reconnaissance and planning.

He's not using a silencer, yet firing the rifle right next to his ear. This would send most people screaming to the ground in agony and partially deaf for life. At the NSW Academy, we had to wear ear-gear when firing a .38 S&W two feet from our ears.

Yeah, but he's got the receiver next to his ear, not the muzzle of the rifle. That is about 18" above the plane of his ears, not so deafening.
