Synopsis:
Academy Award® nominee Viggo Mortensen and Academy Award® winner Mahershala Ali star in Green Book, a film inspired by a true friendship that transcended race, class, and the 1962 Mason-Dixon line. When Tony Lip (Mortensen), a bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx, is hired to drive Dr. Donald Shirley (Ali), a world-class Black pianist, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, they must rely on "The Green Book" to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for African- Americans. Confronted with racism, danger as well as unexpected humanity and humor-they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime.

One of the themes of this movie is "dignity." I think Dr. Shirley was impressed with Tony's aversion to shinning shoes, for anyone.
@jaystrickland4151
3 ай бұрын
Dr. Shirley knew that if a white man was shining shoes of a black man in the deep south they would lynch him. He was testing him to see his reaction make sure he had personal rules of conduct and the willingness to act on them. Such as protecting Dr. Shirley and his crew if there is a problem. Ie it wasn't just a pay check.
@titolovely8237

yea he mirrored his own sense of pride and disdain at suffering indignities that he inevitably had as a black man during the time. someone who can say no is someone you want to deal with. someone who cant is a slave and of no use to anyone.
@cruusha9866

@@titolovely8237 Its not like its some form of "indignity". If the man needs to have shiny shoes for a concert, he needs his shoes shined. Ofc I would argue that you then employ different people for different tasks, but its not demeaning to ask someone to polish your shoes. Much less if you pay them for it.

@@cruusha9866 yea the act itself wouldn’t be but look at the dynamic in which he was saying to shine his shoes. He was sitting on a literal throne and talking down to him in a dismissive and demeaning manner. He definitely meant it as a demeaning test to see if Vigo would take the bait

Mahershala does an amazing job here, the air of dignity and elegance he carries with ease is amazing. You can tell he has a lot of respect for himself, but isn't arrogant, he understands he's dealing with a man who while not as educated, has just as much respect for himself. The way he moves is very deliberate, reminds me of his role in Moonlight, his demeanor just completely embodies the character. Viggo is obviously amazing as usual too.
