The fact that when angry and in a highly charged emotional state, Noem reached for a gun to deal with the problem. This speaks volumes.

As someone who grew up training dogs to hunt, you don't even start the hunting training until they are at least 2. Until then focus on the basics, like self control, coming to you when you call, etc. Since she has confessed, she needs to be charged with animal cruelty.

So she's training her puppy to hunt birds, then she stops with it to se some birds, with no leash, it goes after them, and she executes it. Wow. What a piece of work. And her whole, "well, that's farm life" schtick is BS. I grew up on a farm. We generally took our time with our animals, and didn't leave them loose if they weren't properly trained and responsive. What a pathetic excuse.

It seems to be a horribly botched attempt to appeal to blue-collar and conservative folks by being all "I ain't no snowflake librul, I do what's gots to be done" without any self reflection that no, none of her horrid actions were necessary! I myself realize farmwork isn't pretty and requires killing animals for meat, or sometimes have to be put down because of sickness or untreatable injury. But it should still come from a place of compassion and empathy for the animals. There was nothing wrong with the dog, it just needed PROPER training and a leash, or simply be re-homed. It and the goat and horses did not deserve what happened to them :(

Greyhound rescue organizations have saved hundreds of thousands of Greyhound dogs with grants obtained by the ASPCA and get rehomed to specific families who for example don't have other pets due to the high prey drive seen in the fast dogs. Irresponsible greedy breeders kill the inbred puppies which not only can't make $1200 profit per pup, also can't see or hear, or walk correctly due to deformity. It's just a sickening situation all around what humans do to other mammals and themselves tbh. 😢😢😢

I am a parent to 3 dogs and 2 cats, as well as 13 chickens and 2 roosters. (All are free range btw) Her story is ridiculous. What a monster of a person, she is, disgusting....

For anyone saying a 14 month old dog is not a puppy, you’ve obviously never heard that larger breed dogs don’t mature like smaller breeds do. Also, I have an 11 year old German Shepherd and have had chickens that whole time. She has never hurt any chickens and will just lay down and watch them. It’s called training. You rehome a dog that’s not working out for your situation if it comes to that, not shoot them. I’m not even going to get into the goat issue.I hope she doesn’t have any animals ever again.

Plus 14 years old is right smack dab in the middle of adolescence for many dogs, that's when they go through their "rebellious phase" and start testing boundaries and get incredibly unwieldy. Basically dog teenagers. That's completely normal behavior. They tend to settle down between the two and three year mark.

I’ve been taking my dog to obedience training. There is a white German Shepherd mix that just barks and lunges at the other dog in class. The trainer put the dividers in an area so they could work with the dog without the dog being triggered by seeing the other dogs. It has been 7 weeks. The dog was brought in with the other dogs for a few minutes and it was relatively calm. A huge win for them. This couple has been doing the hard work. I am happier for their dog’s improvement than my own.

I grew up near a farm too. A Farmer does not shoot his own stock when he can sell it. Dog or goat or sheep. Farmers were not that rich. . Sure my German Shepard chased after the chickens but when they flew well he had no answer for that. The farm dog just laid there like old Duke. He did not care about the chickens, then my Shepherd saw the turkeys and they would not fly nor back down. When they raised their wings they looked Much Bigger so dog backed away until he found the geese which would either fly away to a pond or hiss and honk at the dog and take it head on and nipped the dog enough times it decided geese that stood their ground were as bad as the turkeys. So he went after the ones in the pond, barking at them from shore first before getting wet. That pond was man made so it was 8 feet deep. The dog tried to swim after the geese but when he was in the middle the geese flew off...so he had to get out of that hole & couldn't so I had to help it get out of the water with a wooden raft. The ducks it left alone -mainly because they flew to the pond. So, no harm done.

Why would you take a non-hunting dog hunting? That shows such a lapse in judgment I wouldn't vote for her just on that, not even mentioning the fact she told the story in the first place? Is there a requirement for the Republican Party that you have to be mentally-imbalanced? Should I get tested and switch parties if I don't get committed?

My 10 month old puppy killed one of our chickens. Our first thought was "we really need to spend more time with leash training and leave-it so she can be around the chickens". It took us 2 days to remedy the situation. My puppy is happily waiting for fetch instead of dead.

@@russellmiles2861Just because it happens doesn’t mean it’s right. There ARE laws against animal cruelty, or for simply killing an animal for being an animal. There is also a proper way to put down an ill, suffering pet-and it doesn’t involve a gun. I’ve only seen (actually heard) an animal shot once: it was deer that had been hit by a car and had more broken bones than intact ones. It was still alive, but making the most awful sounds I’ve ever heard-it was abundantly clear the animal was suffering horribly. The police officer told everyone to walk around the block, and he shot the deer to end its suffering. I can still hear that gun-shot. When you need to put an animal down, you summon a veterinarian. They are capable of euthanizing an animal in a humane way. And yes, they do make house-calls at farms. Noem just didn’t bother to call the vet: probably because she knew the veterinarian would refuse to kill the puppy or goat for the reasons Noem did.

I've had a few unmanageable dogs before. Mainly, their problem was attacking other dogs/people that they shouldn't attack. There were two that I managed with physical restraint (put on a chain when unsupervised), while the others were sent to friends who didn't have other dogs (these were the dogs that wanted to be the only dog getting any attention). No one had to die.

How sheltered do you have to be to think that killing your dog and goat in this way is in any form remotely acceptable?

Resident of South Eastern Montana here... and all of the ranchers and farmers in my family... even the ones that have been farming for over 50 years would seek to re-home the animal. ALL OF THEM would have done this, because.... wait for it.... they aren't psychopaths. The only domestic animal that was "put down" was my uncle's dog after it was kicked by a horse and was suffering too much and the vet was too far away.

And that was done out of compassion, no one would find fault. I had an old senior dog that had dementia that caused him to become violent. He started biting, something he had never done before. I didn't shoot him, I took him to the vet, we put him on anxiety meds to help him be calm and comfortable. Eventually, the dementia continued to worsen and his quality of life became poor, he was so stressed and tense and miserable and just so not himself, he was so different. So we took him back to the vet and after being told there was nothing more we could do and it was the most humane choice, we said our goodbyes. People who can't conceive of compassionate solutions for animals, should never own animals.
