Kris Kristofferson - Me And Bobby McGee (1979)

Kris's tribute to Dorsey Burnette
Dorsey last appeared in public on August 18, 1979 at The Performing Arts Center in Oxnard, California, the day before he died of a massive coronary at his home in Canoga Park, California, aged 46. He played a half hour show at a benefit for the Arthritis Foundation.
Patrick Landreville, who played the final show with Dorsey, stated
"Most people that play benefits for national or international charities get paid for their performances, at the least their expenses are paid. But Dorsey and I choose to play for free at these affairs, though neither one of us is well off financially. Dorsey is a legendary figure in music and could command a hefty sum for his services but he's chosen to give, not to take. I'm proud to know him and to have had the opportunity to make music with him and I'm especially proud that he considers me his peer."
After his death, singer and friend Delaney Bramlett organized a benefit concert for Dorsey's widow at the Forum in Inglewood, California, in which Kris Kristofferson, Hoyt Axton. Tanya Tucker, Glen Campbell, Edward James Olmos,Duane Eddy, Delaney and Bonnie, Gary Busey, Maureen McGovern and Roger Miller appeared.
The song:
Kris once said that he has never written a song on assignment, except for this one.
But this was really kind of a funny story...
Fred Foster (record producer and Monument Records chief) gave him the idea for it.
Fred had been asked by some friends who were working with a girl named Bobby McKee, if there was something with him and her, and he answered, "What! Me and Bobby McKee! Never!" Maybe that rhymed so nicely that he wanted Kris, who had just started writing for Combine Music, to write a nice song about it. He called him up, "I have a song title for you. It's Me and Bobby McKee, and the hook is, Bobby is a SHE!" For Kris this sounded like the worst idea for a song, but Fred said, "they'll be traveling around or something", and, "Try to write it." This was really not easy for Kris since he usually arranges his own thoughts into songs. So he hid from Fred for a couple of months not to be asked about it, before he really started thinking about the song. But then he saw this movie "La Strada" by Fellini, with Anthony Quinn and Giulietta Masina. And there were some scenes in it that inspired him for the story and the famous line "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose...." He just got the name a little wrong...
What, me and Bobby McKee? Never!"

I can't think of a better way to spend a Sunday morning, than to listen to the music of man that has given God's people so much joy. Kris, you and Waylon, Willie, Tom Petty, and other, fine American song writers and artists, are maybe one of the only reasons for anyone to claim America, today. I read that you took some grief from your family, for not staying in the military and making it a career. The reality though, is that music is the thing that has a lasting impact on people. It doesn't cost millions of lives, and it inspires, in an HONEST way. God Bless brother....

ANNND that's in no way detracting from all of our other great writers of USA Country music either for example the wonderful Carter Family. I just hope they both go on to write another few songs and they'll go STRAIGHT TO NUMBER 1 on the Country music charts too.

Lyrics: Busted flat in Baton Rouge, headin' for the trains, Feelin' nearly faded as my jeans. Bobby thumbed a diesel down just before it rained, Took us all the way to New Orleans. Took my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana And was blowin' sad while Bobby sang the blues, With them windshield wipers slappin' time and Bobby clappin' hands we finally sang up every song That driver knew. Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose, And nothin' ain't worth nothin' but it's free, Feelin' good was easy, Lord, when Bobby sang the blues, And buddy, that was good enough for me, Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee. From the coalmines of Kentucky to the California sun, Bobby shared the secrets of my soul, Standin' right beside me through everythin' I done, And every night she kept me from the cold. Then somewhere near Salinas, Lord, I let her slip away, She was lookin' for the love I hope she'll find, Well I'd trade all my tomorrows for a single yesterday, Holdin' Bobby's body close to mine. Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose, And nothin' left was all she left to me, Feelin' good was easy, Lord, when Bobby sang the blues, And buddy, that was good enough for me. Good enough for me and Bobby McGee.

I think he and many of the old work horse musicians of the time, including Kris, probably would call Steve Goodman the songwriter they were all trying to keep up with, and now still trying to honor. Willie Nelson learned to slow down and use common phrases, minimizing the guitar almost to nothing and then bringing up the tension. This is that kind of song too! Steve never knew any of this, he would say something like boy, that Nelson guy was so nice to me all weekend! He made me two chicken sandwiches and listened to me sing and play, he even watched while I was writing! What a nice guy! But none of the good ole boys plagiarized or took advantage of him, and of course he wasn’t the only one to use these techniques, and a bazillion others. Steve was deeply loved, no matter how many of that generation we lose, it is the mention of Steve Goodman that could even make Cash cry openly!

I was the dolly grip on a movie with Kris in Hawaii in 1998. Total legend. Reserved, smart, charismatic. Told us a few stories, one about the time he was dating Barbara Streisand and he informed his great pal Johnny Cash. "You're shittin' in some pretty high cotton there, buddy!" Johnny replied. True. 😂😂
