Kobo Clara HD - How I accessed & upgraded the internal microSD & bypass registration (Skip log-in)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I made this quick-ish video showing how I went about upgrading the internal microSD card. Lots of short takes to cut down video length.
Also showing how I bypass registration so you don’t need to log on every time you want to read a book!
My Kobo Glo before it went all wonky, didn't require logging it.
Do Kobos have short life spans? Does anyone still own working Kobo reader of more than 7 years?
I've never heard of SQL as I'm not into programming but it looks fun!
If I had more time on my hands, I’d give it a go as it kind of reminded me of Excel spreadsheets which I am fascinated by.
khanacademy.org/computing/comp... if y’all interested to give it a go. The lady giving the tutorial is funny as.
Thank you for watching. Cheers!

Disclaimer 1:
I am no an expert. I learnt every thing I performed in this video by LOTS of research on Google and at the end of the day it works For Me so I am happy.
There is an Abundance of information on the internet for upgrading micro SD card/bypass registration.
Plus there are Many More Hacks that you can do on your Kobo so I suggest grab what's relevant for you and discard what isn't.
*Got a question? I definitely will not know the answer to it :)*
but I've met lots of friendly people in the forums that are happy to help!

Opening up your Kobo VOIDS your warranty.

Disclaimer 3:
*I MUST MENTION THAT* while researching, I found a FEW variations of the SQL commands that was suggested for accessing the 'user table' in the KoboReader.sqlite database.
The one I showed in the video was the command that worked FOR MY Kobo.
Again, I am not an SQL expert so hit the forums for help if you're stuck.
Below was the most common COMMAND I stumbled across that you could try if mine didn't work for you:
sqlite3 KoboReader.sqlite

Thank you mate. This actually fixed my bricked Kobo Clara HD. It would not start after a formware update. Kobo Support said it could not be fixed and offered me 20 euro discount on a new one. I created a new SD card using a used 64Gb card from an older phone. And it just came back to life.

@@natalieolsen7450 I removed the SD card from te Kobo like it is shown in the video. I bought as simple USB SD card reader to put it in. Then I put it in the PC and was able to create an image like shown in this video. Then I wrote the image to a new SD card and put that in. It would give an exclamation mark at startup. But, this time recovery mode on the Kobo did work and it repaired the Kobo from the recovery partition.

really their onboard memory shouldn't be on an SD card. SD cards are great but corrupt way more often than any other form of memory, lol. That's why if I owned one of these I'd keep the original image of the clara backed up on my hard drive somewhere to restore that image whenever it starts getting wonky

Awesome Video!! Worked perfectly, exactly like you showed. I followed this procedure on a Kobo Aura Edition 2. I found it odd that the stated capacity of this ereader is 4GB, yet the internal SD card was an 8GB Micro SD Card, with 3+GB not formatted/not being used. I bumped up to 64GB. Tremendous public service to Kobo users! Thank You!!

tape the original sd card inside on the pcb board so you won't lose it. also to explain to others why you cannot copy.... it's because the kobo uses a partition-based system for its firmware. firmware can also be file-based, but on sd cards file-based partitions corrupt easier. File-based installations are nice though because you can just copy-paste unlike with an image

I prefer really white screens and have two Kobo Glo HD's (one is very white, one is yellowish unfortunately!). I thought about buying a Clara HD, but I'm unsure what the color of the screen is. Hi, during day... It's pure white colour. Towards the night, it auto changes to a warm yellow/orange light. I have no idea how to change the colour but it appears to be automatic. I personally like the warm yellowy/orangey light. Easy on the eyes. I've had a quick look on aliexpress.com for kobo replacement screens. Only models available are GLO, AURA H20 & Libra. The prices seem to be around USD30-45 including shipping. Unfortunately, ifixit.com doesn't have guides for Clara teardowns. However, I have a Kobo Glo (white light fortunately) and on ifixit, it looks relatively easy to replace. Lastly, Clara is 99% most likely the last model to have a removable internal SD card. I believe moving forward, all Kobo models will have the SD cards soldered onto the motherboard.

Thank you for sharing your advice. I am a novice at this kind of manipulation and since I wasn't extra careful when opening up the device by prying open the cover, I accidentally damaged parts of the screen. Now some portions of the touch screen do not register my taps anymore, and have become unusable. Several semi-cracks have appeared across the surface, and several fine lines of dead pixels. So if you plan on doing this procedure: it does work, but please be extra careful as not to damage your sensitive screen. Now I wonder if the damage was worth the hassle. Calculate: on the 6.7 GB of free storage, you can easily put hundreds of books. Why would you need several thousands? It's better to manage your library offline (on your PC or on the KOBO) by deselecting unused books and reloading them from the KOBO account when the need arises. -- While writing the image to the 128 GB SD card, before re-expanding the useable space of the card to its full capacity, I encountered an error of the disk writing software. It said "Done", but at the same time alerted me of a writing error. I installed the card in the KOBO anyhow, and it has worked since then without problems.

But it was not the only trouble. I see many problems with Android on Kobo: GUI is confusing: nickel GUI is minimalistic and black-on-white. Too much scrolling: in nickel you open a window or turn a page too much refreshes: nickel is more conservative, it do a full refresh only when you really needs it " good luck!

Reading these reports on Kobo Claras failing and getting bricked after dodgy updates is very off-putting. I'm not keen on being stuck on Kindle's Amazon ecosystem, but also I don't fancy the micro USB port on Kobo, and nor the disappointing battery reviews. I'm new to e-readers but it's tough deciding between Kobo and Kindles, especially I intend to use Calibre and sideload books and not buy them ever.

I agree with you. I got one of those magnetic USB cable. It's still sticks out but not by a lot and doesn't really bother me. The speed is not fantastic but very easy to click to charge or even Transferring the very small epub files. Maybe something to consider? I am not a Kindle fan so always with Kobo. Good luck with your decision!

@@lmbpros I even considered doing that, but it seems magnetic cables are for charging only and not transferring data. I saw the Kobo Libra 2 went on sale for £129 here so I grabbed one. USB-C, bigger battery, 7" screen, warm light, dark mode and even buttons. Hopefully this thing lasts me 10 plus years like some of the comments I've seen from people in my research. And yes, I don't even have an Amazon account so I really didn't want to be voluntarily locked in the Bezos cage by getting Kindle.

No, I have not needed to go further than replacing the SD card. A quick search on ifixit.com yielded guides for Kobo GLO, MINI, TOUCH & AURA only. However, looking at the guides, it looks fairly reasonable to attempt as it doesn't involved soldering (for which I have zero experience). Only potential issue is removing the adhesives joining the screen to the case/motherboard. www.ifixit.com/Guide/kobo+glo+ereader+Screen+Replacement/134425 www.ifixit.com/Guide/Kobo+Aura+HD+Screen+Replacement/96135?revisionid=HEAD ********************************************** Here is one result for Kobo Clara screen. Please contact the seller to confirm if it really is for the Kobo Clara N249. www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001785844949.html The price is USD64.60. Best of luck!

I have a preowned Kobo N905B, i've added a 32GB micro SD card into the slot to expand the storage which is all well and fine but i need to remove it and plug the card itself into my laptop to add/remove files instead of just plugging the Kobo in. I'd very much like to change the device's internal storage to a 1TB SD (i have a habit of going overkill with my tech, and noone can convince me to settle for less than this lol) so i can load an insane library. My question would just be, is it extremely similar to this video guide if i were to take it apart? I'd hate to break my e-reader by not knowing what i'm doing

Just google on eBay or AliExpress for 'phone removal tools' don't spend too much on those tools either. I also suggest to spend around USD5 (including shipping and taxes) .
