The Kobo Glo HD has a Secret SD Card

Ғылым және технология

Good e-Reader is proud to report that we have found a hidden SD card on the Kobo Glo HD. This SD card contains the entire operating system, which means there is no internal drive.

    I found out about this today because I decided to open my old kobo touch to see if I could change the battery. To my surprise I found an sd card inside. I'm assuming you can't boot it because the card also has a boot partition? Who knows.

    dd = Disc Dump, it allows to copy sector by sector of a given source memory to another, it is a very powerful command. If using windows, you can get a linux like terminal here: git-scm.com/download/win

    dude there is prolly hidden boot partition ...so you cant just copy and paste..try cloning the card and all partition IF you can even read it..might need to try in linux since windows might not be abke to read the file system.

    Cool. Seems like a simple configuration. Don't suppose you know of any Linux based ereaders equivalent to the kindle with expandable storage or something like this where it has a removable SD card for the more tech savvy? I'm ultimately looking for a non-google device. A degoogled device could be cool too if there is a tutorial for it you know of.

    Need to use cloning software from the original SD to the other one. Might be a little tricky cause you need to increase the partition size on the new one.

    4 GB micro SD card holds 2500 to 3000 books (as *Verd Gj* user says), so if put 8 GB micro SD card that's will be 4500 to 5000 books? Am I correct?

  • @EdgyShooter

    @EdgyShooter

    Well 2gb is taken by the system so you actually only start with about 2gb so taking that into account, an 8gb card is giving you an extra 6gb (or 3x the initial storage). So probably around 7500 to 9000 books. That's a lot of books

    This is true I did the same for my Kobo Glo 2GB Internal Memory and copied the card to a 32 GB card did the partitioning as described and everything went as expected. Kobo however did not boot up with the 32GB card and I did not even any red or blue light unlike the above video. The kobo booted up fine with the 2GB original card. I am not sure if I meesed up the 32GB card prep but I tried it twice by formatting the 32 GB card a second did a repeat and rinse but did not work.

The usb port in my kobo glo doesn't work anymore except for charging, I was wondering if, to add new ebooks into my kobo, couldn't I just add them to the SD card (or isit risky messing with the data inside it). Knuckles the Echidna That's what I was thinking of, dumping the raw image data and then writing that to a different card. Regular copy would not work because of either a hidden partition on the card or as simple as a boot loader.Also if it has a boot loader on the card, it might be a nice vector for running other OS-es on it.
