The Ultimate e-Ink review for note takers - Remarkable 2, Kindle Scribe, Boox Note Air3 C and more..

Ғылым және технология

How could I replace my paper notebook with something digital? Being a user of Evernote for years - which works great - I still used paper for certain scenarios. One day in Jan 23 a colleague showed me his Remarkable 2 eInk tablet and I immediately started an entire year long search for the ultimate eInk notes taking device. Lots of devices reviewed - Remarkable 2, Kindle Scribe, Rocketbook, iPad mini, Boox Nova Air 7.8, Boox Note Air3 C.
Let me know your thoughts
** UPDATE APRIL 24 **
I use this case that I bought on Amazon. Really cool for the money …. MoKo Case for Remarkable 2 Tablet, Ultra-Thin Magnetic Tablet Case

I watched a thousand videos comparing all of the options, none of them really answered what I needed to make my decision. Until I saw this video. For real, your story was 100% exactly a direct answer to all questions and doubts I had. Thank you very much. And remarkable 2 it is, then.

This is some absolutely excellent and to the point review. I started getting in the e-ink tablets world and I was overwhelmed and was going on circles between Remarkable 2 and Boox note 3 monochrome. People on reddit kept saying that there experience with Boox was worth and they were disappointed and for me, having a fully functional Android device where I can install kindle able on it was getting the best of 2 worlds. But for me having a superior note taking app was more important. So you video helped me a lot, Thank you!

Wait, did you know you can do all of that with the Boox Note Air 3C? You can even use it as a secondary display with the Spacedesk App, run Zoom, sync with Google Drive, utilize its own cloud service with autosync, and even use Obsidian instead of the rather subpar Evernote. I don't think it's even expensive. Unlike a phone or any Apple device, it's a one-time purchase that won't become obsolete in six months, especially being an e-ink device.

I'm confused, the Note (+case) was too expensive at £550, but the remarkable (+case) was not at £477 when it seems to come with less features? Remarkable get's points for sync, but only with their own app, which is what you gave negatives points to both the Scribe and Tab for? I don't own any of these devices, but from only what you said, not showed, your scoring seems weird?

For me, I initially liked the Kindle Scribe more than the iPad Air 5 because I wanted better visual health and for my eyes not to burn when writing down and reading for so long, but then I missed some functions of the iPad and having even a minimal color in my notes, that's how I found the perfect one for me, the boox note air 3c, in my case it's great, I sold the iPad and the kindle and I kept it and in my case there is the better device, it's worth every penny , very fast, electric screen and almost all the functions of an iPad or a galaxy tab.

The remarkable is excellent. In the end the simpler os makes it’s battery last the longest and the write feel is amazing. I wish they’d add the possibility of creating links both between pages on a notebook and between different ones but the first can be done with linked pdf “templates”. And also it’s great you can add and move pages from a pdf document. About the light: I’m glad it doesn’t have one actually. It’s easier on the eyes and the “ink” is much closer to the tip of the pen

I wish - it was powerfull enough to manage oversized PDF (Architectural plans) which require fresuent zoom in and out while annotating. - Ligth for on sie ease of use while in dim locations Still on the hunt for the perfect device for my paperless jouney in this use case. Remarkable is perfect for pages size to A4, bigger is a pain as lagging and showing it's power limitation. Hoping for a beefier remarkable 3 !

But as you know, in this process I bought a iPad Mini and my big iPad Pro is now rarely used. So one option for you is writing on iPad Mini, if you are happy with iPad writing…..just get a ‘cheap’ 64g one or even refurbished. you returned the remarkable the first time because of its "limited use" when you were really only looking for a digital notebook lol remarkable is a great writing device as I had the 1st gen but then because of its limited functionality, I don't often use it. The best bang for the buck is the amazon scribe as it takes notes and it's the arguably the #1 e-reader / e-book ecosystem. Now I read more often AND take notes. Btw the dark mode in the scribe is just amazing for the eyes especially at night

No ability to get into my business workflow (2) I found it was simply too big for reading, at least a nice cosy novel - eg no good reading in bed. So, overall the Scribe was just an expensive big Kindle - for me. Thanks for your comment - much appreciated

I’m surprised the kobo elipsa 2E didn’t end up on ur review list. I’ve recently been watching these sorts of videos and it seems to do quite a bit more in many areas compared to others especially if ur wanting to use it as an e-reader and annotate directly on the page. It has many other note specific features too so I think I may pick one up soon. I’m from London and I got a kobo libra 2 earlier this year and it has been amazing especially being able to read my borrowed library books from Libby on it without having to sideload or anything just pops straight up on my kobo as soon as I borrow a book. This is amazing to me as here in the uk we don’t often get these sort of perks like many other overseas countries do. Even more so that kobo seems to often been seen as less than kindle where in fact the quality, ease of use and integration definitely surpasses my kindle paperwhite. I enjoy them both but definitely think people need to look into the underdog a bit more. Great video at least u can say u got to try various products.

One kinda solution….you can use coloured pens on Remarkable. You cannot see on the device, but when you sync with a laptop or regular tablet you will see the colours. If you really need color on eInk just set your expectation that it is very weak, with minimal colours, due to the eInk screen technology. So if you are coming from a regular iPad or Android tablet it will look very very different. But it may be fine for your use case

FWIW, for the Kindle Scribe, you can actually view your notebooks on the iOS, Android and Mac apps. I have the Nova Air 2, Scribe, ipad mini, and 12.9 inch iPad Pro. I love the Scribe the most amongst all of them for writing/journaling. Only thing I wish they add to the Scribe is support for searching handwritten notes. While I love the Nova Air's size and screen clarity, I disliked how slow and cumbersome the software is. I think Amazon has the most performant/responsive e-ink software out of all which is also why I'm happy to stick w the Scribe. The only reason I didn’t keep it was the return window was closing and I just felt I N would feel stoopid when Boox or Supernote released 2024 machines which operate much faster than the RM2 leaving me feeling the money was wasted. I have mild regret but hope the near future will prove me right.

I have the Supernote A5X and am biting at the bit waiting for the A4 version released early next year, which I've heard may have a split screen mode... meaning, I can review a document one pane and build notes in the other. But I think if you're in a busy office environment and need to collaborate loads... you've got to be looking at a Boox device.

@@davidr1431 I can't justify purchasing the A5X2 when I already have an A5x. Still, I am filling the hard drive pretty quickly and can burn through a battery charge in a couple of days and thus, the limited battery cycles so an A5X2 would be nice with its SD card slot and replaceable battery... while the A4X2 _[if thats what it is called]_ is a must. The only thing that may dissuade me from purchasing the A4X2 is if is a _'slim version',_ which I've heard some call it, and if that means it doesn't have a replaceable battery. Then I might just go for the A5X2 because of the limited cycles all batteries suffer.

Thanks for the video. I’ve recently bought ReMarkable 2 and looked at a number of videos on E ink notepads. Many of them talk about the importance of handwriting experience, but Nowhere have I seen a discussion of software that would LEARN one’s handwriting. I’ve used it for a couple of weeks now, mainly for writing, and it keeps on making the same mistakes. Have I overlooked something, or does a tablet designed for handwriting really lack the ability to learn handwriting? I bought a computer cum tablet in 2009, and the first thing it did, was provide reams of text for me to write out, so that it would recognise my writing. I would be grateful for any help on this.

Good question. So the Boox is a good device, for what it is, but depends on what you want. For me the colour was weak - in fact it looks weirdly better on my video than real life - but for making colourful notes maybe it is good enough. The Boox Notes App is reasonable, but I didn’t find it very intuitive. However, the killer for me, and maybe for you, is poor integration to Evernote, and I think OneNote is the same - you will find many KZread reviews about it. Basically you write in a box in the bottom third of the screen, then some time later it transcribes into Evernote. It’s fundamentally clunky, has a lag, and for me rendered Evernote a non option.

I got a Chinese device called the Hanvon N10 that did away with the touch-screen and has a row of buttons. So you interact with it using the pen and the buttons. I love it because I miss my old kindle 3 with the page turn buttons, and it's great for note taking or annotating because you can use the buttons to turn pages and the pen to write with and never worry about accidental palm touches. Unfortunately it's not great because inside of China it's a $250 device, but outside of China it's a $450 device.

I own the Boox Note Air 2 Plus. Very sleek and sexy and it functions well as a Kindle reader and a note taker. But how it works to sync files and place them into the cloud is, in my opinion, very clunky. I have up on the Onyx Boox cloud and moved to Dropbox. That seems to be a bit more logical but the file system within the Note Air 2 Plus is very difficult (nearly impossible) to truly understand. If the logic behind the file system and storage was redesigned I’d love the product. As it is, it works and I have to have faith that things are put where they belong on the Boox. Give me a cheaper iPad with the liquid screen display of a Boox and I’d be a happy camper.
