This is the kind of devices major tech companies SHOULD be bringing out. User-replaceable parts, upgradeable, clean interface. The only thing that would make it better is it being open source.

Here is the thing, major tech companies usually try to cater for the majority of consumers while this is a super niche product. Considering how niche it is, the price is pretty hefty for someone who wants to try enter that niche as well so I don't see major tech companies making stuff like that anytime soon

Super note is what happens when a company works for the users, every decision is made for the wellbeing of the consumer, not the other way around

Very impressive. The bit about Amazon basically preventing Kindles from being repaired is a deal breaker, and I WAS on the verge of pulling the trigger on a new one.

Dualbooting is such a perfect way to do it since not everyone likes an Android e-ink. Seems like a great company!

As an e-reader user, doodler and writer, KZread's algorithm led me to this video. I watched this video, debated for two weeks, and then bought it. I won't get it until a month from now because of the shipping backlog, but I don't regret it. I think I watched almost every video about this product while I was trying to decide whether to buy it or not. Out of all of them, this was the one that had the most information and explanation I was looking for. ✨

That's awesome to hear! I was the same as you when I bought my first Supernote, watched every video on KZread haha, wasn't that many back then. But it's also why I know as a consumer myself, it's important to cover the main features people use, and the benefits the limitations of a product like this bring. I've heard they've had overwhelming support for the launch of this product, I hope you enjoy your Nomad once it arrives!

I like the concept and even think having less distractions is great but $500 for that is wild! You can get an Ipad for that. I know it's not meant to compete with tablets but how can you not? It's literally a stripped down tablet with an e-ink screen that can't run anything but a notes app and an art app. If This was $300 all in, I think that would be something to consider.

This is for people who don’t want to write on iPad glass. Even with a matte screen protector and iPad doesn’t touch the experience of writing on an e ink tablet.

I've had one for a couple of months. I LOVE it. It will have a glitch ever now and then, but nothing too painful. It's just a great device.

3 months into my Nomad A6 it has the dubious honour of a product you have a relationship with. I’ve had a few in life like my Classic Mini Cooper S, a Brompton Bicycle and my VW Westfalia. It’s a love hate thing. You can’t live with it, you can’t live without it. Hoping the next software update sorts out the Irritations as this is a marriage you definitely have to work at.

I like these kinds of single purpose devices. In a sea of EVERYTHING trying to do everything and being aimless and not great at anything, it’s nice to have something do one thing well

Man I have been waiting for the A5X2 for more than 6 months now, and then you go and do a review of the Nomad, just makes me want it even more. Can't wait and glad to see you enjoy one of the best tech products out there.

I feel like I've been waiting for this product since e-ink screens became a thing. Great run down of the product, features, and the company goals. You my friend have a new subscriber and Supernote has a new customer!

GREAT specific demo of this device. I'm going to take the plunge. Seeing it in use made me realize I don't actually need to wait for the bigger A5. The sustainability and repair-ability is key for me. It's how Subarus used to be (and I drove one of those for 19 years and 500,000 miles of commuting and roadtripping. It's still rolling in my neighborhood!)

I really like the compact nature, fits in more bags! Yes Reparability is an exceptional stand out feature, hopefully we see reparability come back into "fashion" as these smaller companies start to take up sales.

Love you being honest at the end/highlighting what's great about their products, that you wouldn't have bought it yourself because the product support is great and you don't have to chase expensive hardware upgrades for (major or minor) software changes

Thanks for showing off the Supernote on a channel that isn't dedicated to E-ink devices already. I'm a big fan of my A5X and have been endlessly impressed with Ratta's attitude towards their products and how they interact with their customers. I think there are a lot of people that could really find good uses for E-ink tablets who just haven't heard of them or considered them yet.

This is literally everything I've wanted in an e-ink device. Fantastic build quality, user repairable, hackable, customizable, simple and clean firmware. Excellent design and review. Currently using a Sony DBT-CB1 which was the closest thing I could find to a 'simple' e-paper device. Will absolutely be getting one of these in the future.

If you have an alumni or student email, you can get a little bit of money off of it. I hope eventually they support an Obsidian app and a browser that has gopher or gemini protocol support- maybe the Lagrange browser?.

I've been a supernote user for about 3 years now. They don't do discounts, they're not a huge company that can afford to do so. But they do stand behind their products, and the X2 series introduces even more repairability and sustainability practices.

What I found most impressive is how fast the response rate is. reMarkable 2 is an amazing piece of offline tech that I love writing and sketching on, but it's nowhere near as fast when selecting and dragging stuff around!

Thanks for the detailed review! I have a reMarkable 2 for over two years now, and I'm always interested in what the competition brings. The main downsides of reMarkable compared to this is: 1) No repairability (or rather very very difficult) 2) Subscription fee 3) The 'straight line' issue you spoke of. I got it without any folio, it's enough that you put it in a backpack with a laptop, that has some magnets. I hope consumers chose Nomad or products like this, that offer easy repairability so that it can be used at least a decade. I'll continue to use my reMarkable since it works well, but if anything were to happen to it, I'll have to consider this.

Well that was the clearest and most balanced review I’ve seen so far. Thanks very much. This is probably the closest I’ve seen to what I was looking for when I first saw eink readers. OneNote integration would be fantastic, but I think this is likely to be close enough to be very useful for my work notes.

Finally, a company that prioritizes customers. Never heard of this, but seriously looking into buying it now.

I've found this technology really appealing for years now, as I have problems focusing if I'm taking notes/annotating a document on a PC. It's just too easy to be lazy and over-annotate rather than really thinking about why a sentence or passage stands out to you. I'm sure everyone has had that moment of opening an old file and finding 50% of it highlighted with notes that aren't helpful at all. Handwriting forces you to commit to an annotation, thereby inclining you only to annotate things that are worth more than a "yes" or "agreed" in the margin. That said, I still do all my work on real paper and type up my notes afterwards. I just... I just can't bring myself to commit to purchasing one of these e-ink devices. There are so many things about it that feel just a little off, a little awkward, a little less than what I want. I'm sure you get used to those things and probably you don't even notice them after a while. But eventually I won't have to get used to them because eventually there's going to be a breakthrough in responsiveness or refresh rate. I've been holding out for that breakthrough for at least 10 years. It's going to come soon, I swear. I will say that this device does have a lot of pretty amazing features. The left bar's functionality is really interesting, particularly the select shortcut, and I feel my life will forever be incomplete until I have that handwriting-to-header menu. But above all else, the bracket shortcut at 11:25 is brilliant and almost enough to make me break out my wallet right now. But I won't. I'll keep waiting for that breakthrough. Or retirement. Whichever comes first.

Using that for Photoshop work would be actually sick drawing part of your desing on the go, maybe outside to get some inspiration and then go home to finish it of at your desktop that is kind a nice.

Thank you, I spent a little bit of time trying to figure out the movement as well as lighting as there was minimal space between the camera and my hand!

I hope that Math Expressions are gonna be supported in the Future and adding Plug-In support with making their Software Open-Source to create great Programms.

The algorithm fed me this and I'm glad it did. Currently using the ipad for grad school but always kept my eye on the field for an e-ink device. Remarkable 2 is definitely slicker but missing a lot of the bells and whistles that you're mentioning here. Awesome job going beyond just the surface level stats that most tech reviews do (but not so overwhelming that I got lost)!

Dude, the Supernote Nomad is an amazing device. I found your channel through your desk build videos and noticed you had it there. Working on my long term review as we speak. I love how much Ratta listens to customers for updates, I have been in communication with them about Atelier and they really listen to everything. Great review btw, just subbed! Still WAY to expensive for me to justify making notes, but digitally. Unless these things become around 80-100 euro's i won't be buying one anytime soon.

true, I have an ipad but I can also make full digital art, record audio with my notes and sync them and read books in many formats. As much as I want to have a really good single e-ink display, good writing texture device that makes all my writing digital, this ain't it.

This looked very cool and was just what I was looking for. Then I saw the price for the base unit, pen and case at around €500, add 20% import tax and handling fees (thanks Brexit) and that's makes it a very lovely but very expensive note taking device. (albeit a really really cool one) Also, does it really not come with any backlighting? I couldn't see any mention of it on the website but that seems a really odd omission for something that looks like it's been expertly thought out and built?

I LOVE this as an alternative to remarkable. Although I like fountain pens and paper and kindof don't see the utility of drawing on an e ink tablet over a real notebook. But maybe Ill get this to replace my kindle as an e reader :)

SOLD! Will order one at the end of the month. I was between this and the remarkable. But its just a bit too expensive.

Wow, this seems amazing. I've personally had a reMarkable 2 for about 2 years at this point, and I absolutely love that thing, but there are some things that I wish it could do. It seems like the Supernote just does all of those things natively. Ie, it's simply awesome. I will certainly look into getting a Supernote instead of the reMarkable 3 (or a replacement 2) in the future when my reMarkable 2 decides to become too much of a nuisance.

Looking at their order page, they are offering a 50% discount for A5/A6 users! I've had my A6 for a few years and it's been sitting on my shelf, unused, for quite a while. The new features of the Nomad seem pretty sweet, so I might have to avail myself of that deal.

Would love to see it as changable part to my framework 16. It would be cool using it along with reading papers or learning something. Some flawless obsidian integration would be great as well. Thx for this.

I mean WRT to the light bar and the pogo-pins, I'd have the mag-light have a bigger battery to share with the the Nomad.

Will be interesting to see what accessories they release, as yeah a light bar with a battery would be awesome. Hopefully not too big though to make it top heavy when holding, I'm really interested in making my own though, would be an experiment for sure!

It's a fantastic distraction free device, they've done great with making the software minimal and snappy. The new roughly 10" large A5 X2 is expected before March 2024, unsure if a A4X model is to also release? Are you hoping for one larger than the A5 X2?

@@camshand That's the plan. I read Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport (great book I think you'd enjoy if you haven't already) and went out and bought a notebook. Then a notebook per project. I can be in and out of 8-10 projects at any one time so keeping track of paper notes became hard quickly. I was dead set on getting a Remarkable 2, but after doing some research, I really liked Supernote's software, especially the ability to make headings and tasks out of notes. Before I went head first into buying a new expensive piece of tech I took advantage of Prime day and got a Kindle scribe as a halfway solution to see if I'd actually use an e-ink tablet, and it turns out I do. Looking to make the upgrade now, but I do a lot of sketching and diagramming, so keen for a bigger screen. TL;DR, yup, looking for a bigger screen but really keen to get a Supernote in my hands!

It’s a shame they are so expensive, the remarkable is $1k in Australia. I brought an iPad and 10 x premium Journals instead

For such a device, the price is insane. Maybe they're trying to cover their R&D while expecting small amount of sales for such a niche product, but still. It's maybe worth half of what's they're asking for it.

It's because there's 1 company that holds the patent for e ink currently, so they have a monopoly over the tech that companies like supernote use

Everything about that is lovely and I would be ecstatic to have that in my collection, but Amazon Basic's makes a really cheap grid notebook which is just paper for a fraction of the cost. Can't wait till the day stuff like this is more accessible!

I have both the super note and the remarkable 2 and although the super note does have some nice customizable features and a better price point the simplicity of the remarkable and immediate access to your documents via the app and ability to easily send them has my super note collecting dust :(

Have you tried the Supernote Companion Apps? they have them for Desktop and Phone. Plus the newer Chauvet OS versions have Google Drive and OneDrive support, so file syncing is so much easier than a couple years ago.

Kindle Scribe is wonderful, writing is awesome experience. Software is nowhere as good as Supernote. It does have backlighting which makes reading so much easier. I have Boox Mini, it is great but it can be glitchy.

I like the idea, but why not have a Kindle and an iPad (and turn off all notifications and download only what u need) ??? Can someone explain to me Also.. your vid is so WELL MADE man.. jesus.

Fair point, my Wife has her Kindle and then uses her Phone for everything else. I wanted a simple tool that can do everything I need it too, that made it annoying to google things and get distracted. So the ePaper limitations really suit my needs.

I will likely end up getting this, companies like this deserve to wipe the floor with the "competition"

Only two things holding me back on this. From an artist perspective, (which is why I would want this for my sketching) that screen is too small. Sounds like a 10" model is coming soon so that would be great. But the real killer is the lack of ability to erase at the pixel level. In other words it should allow for me to erase a small fraction of a line rather than the entire line that I just laid down. I don't need an "undo" as much as I would desire a true eraser.

Ohhhh realise I never showed this, it has a normal eraser, it's on the top menu bar, just isn't a default. The Lamy EMR pen also has a dedicated button to activate the pixel based eraser, which is quite useful for sketching. Keep an eye out for that larger model, I reckon it'll be a hit with Artists.

@@camshand Perfect!!!! I reached out to them and they indeed confirmed likely a late March release for the larger screened model. And they also confirmed the eraser functionality too. This may be such a great sketchpad solution for me!!!!

I have a remarkable 2 and this thing, despite its size and thickness. This supernote has all the software functionality I wish that mine had.

yeah I've tried a friends remarkable 2 and whilst it is a nice eInk tablet to write on, I prefer the feel and non-replaceable nib of the Supernote. The simplicity of the UI really makes it feel like a tool that I can depend on. It's always charged, fits in the small pockets of bags, and does what I need it to.

That is one of my biggest gripes with my remarkable, constantly replacing nibs. The feel is completely ruined after a few days of heavy use. Also, if dropped on the tip it totals the pen and you have to replace it (I would know. I’m on pen 3).

Agree! I do love my nomad crystal edition as a compliment to my reMarkable 2, which is something I have seen a lot of. I love the portability as well. Similar I’ve had some issues with it so having both my rM2 and A5X has been great. rM2 will in my opinion has the best writing experience at least so far from a dual ecosystem user. SN has some of the best features that I value for school and organization.

looks great; just want to see different sizes (small like a smartphone, medium like the current device and large for bigger canvas); also color e-ink would be great - nothing fancy; just some basic colours for sketching stuff

Large is coming soon, should be called the A5 X2 so keep a lookout for that. As for phone sized, i've seen them be popular for reading, but given the supernote is a writing first device it may be a bit limited having a notepad size. Could be interesting though. And yeah colour would be cool but theyre very slow. Having even one colour like red drastically increases the refresh times of the eink display. Great for readers, but for drawing quite tricky. Cool thing is you can export your markup on documents as a red or blue pen when saving as PDF. So on a computer it will stand out more

I use remarkable 2 because supernote is not available in Uk.. remarkable 2 looks more premium and works fine for organizing written notes.

Sub’d and can’t wait for the next one, and intrigued by your “see thru desk” project, what’s that all about then? ;-) Love that device; I do wonder if they released their software for the iPad how it would do; I find Apple’s Notes App powerful but with a terrible interface, would be nice to compare this assuming they could release it as an app since the OS for the unit is basically invisible (and used to be the iPad’s philosophy as well). And there’s something quite…beautiful? Aesthetically pleasing? About the minimalist design and just overall appearance..even color I think would spoil it…just nice and simple and attractive, uncluttered, soothing almost, like the Angels Adam’s of tablets or something, lol.

"The future of paper", I've been hearing this kind of thing since Steve Jobs announced the first iPad. The price of the Supernote Nomad starts at 300 dollars, a sheet of paper costs a fraction of a cent...The future seems very expensive to me.

The thing with those who are giving "paper" alternatives is that they always miss the main point...... Why did we actually stopped using stones to type on and started using clay tablets? Why did we stopped clay tablets and started using paper? The only thing that we can point as the reason for the transaction is price....... Who the hell is going to pay 1000x the cost of writing!? You're seeing the video: it means that you have what it takes to do whatever you want to do on such a product........ It's only fair for you to buy one is if it's cost effective!!

Being e-Ink it's like paper, the brighter the lights around you the brighter it'll look. I have bright lights in the studio, but that's just to help the cameras. It looks much like pen on paper in a normal room.

I regret that it wasn’t available when I was in college. I was way too disorganized with physical notebooks and often forgot to replace them when I ran out of paper.

Do you know what the price of the new larger format will be? I'm really keen as I read lots of pdf journal articles and have issues with my eyes

None of the parts are available. The unit itself isn’t available. It’s another buy into something that isn’t real with the hope of what it will be in the future. Which personally I will do most times. But I’m kind of sick of it right now. So I won’t be paying 400 dollars to “pre order” this when they have zero info on the replacement parts , a new unit coming soon that is supposed to be even better ? Oh and a bigger screen version you can’t see price of or pre order.
