Knitting Tutorial - Sharbella Shawl

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

"Sharbella" means "beautiful scarf" in Italian, and that's exactly what this is! Elegant and pretty, with gentle shaping and lace trim along one side. The sport-weight yarn makes this a good lace project for knitters who have never tried knitting lace before, and the video tutorial walks you through the tricky parts and gives guidance for making this stress-free lace knitting.
The Sharbella pattern is free with purchase of two hanks of Gems Sport, 100% Merino machine washable wool yarn. Just add the yarn to your cart, and the pattern will be automatically added.

    I had never knitted much at all expect for a garter stitch scarf, and for some insane reason a shawl caught my eye which was described as for a beginner, well it had a section of lace that had me tearing my hair out , I had pulled it back at least 30 plus times, so much so that it was felting the wool just about lol, I had to start a new ball before I tried again, in my mind was that there had to be a way to save how far you needed to pull back to should you make a mistake or get lost in your pattern as I did, and low and behold you have it, thank you , thank you, 🙏 I have confidence to attempt this shawl now. Lol.

LOL...as a result, I recently completed your Fiona Sundress of all things and though there are a few little glitches I can live with, I can gift is as a gift with great pride and excitement as it is for my first granddaughter! I'm STILL in shock! I've probably looked at every instructor on youtube and you are by FAR my favorite and in my opinion, the BEST! And now I'll never forget you because of my little Fiona dress success! Beautiful! Excellent job. I'm really grateful for the lace pattern. Actually I was looking for something just like this one, made with sport yarn, for a cardigan that I'm going to start. Just allow me a comment about Sharbella which in Italian is only part of the expression "beautiful scarf". The complete Italian words are "sciarpa bella" (where sciarpa means shawl and the letters scia are pronounced sha). Anyway I've subscribed to your channel, Thank you

    You want to be sure when you're knitting any pattern that your gauge (stitches per inch) matches what is listed in the pattern. That way the yarn amounts listed will be correct, your size will be the same as the pattern, and the fabric drape will be the same.

(I'm waiting for the yarn you recommended to arrive) I have this horrible problem with my beginning knit stitches. They are always very loose. • @verypinkknits

    If you're having a tension issue and you recognize when/why it is happening, just focus on those stitches every row, making sure they are a good tension before you move on to the next stitch. That attention will eventually become muscle memory.

    I love your videos. I tried a lifeline the other day when working a more complicated lace pattern (complicated for me since I've only done 2 other using bulky yarn - quite different than DK or sport), and it worked great! Please excuse my ignorance, when you launder the scarf after wearing, do you need to reblock it? I just knit my two bulky weight lace projects and didn't block them (it's inexpensive, very low wool content) so I'm not there yet, but I'd like to try this one using Louet yarn and I'm curious about what happens after/with regular laundering of projects that need to be blocked. Thanks so much!

  • @verypinkknits

    @verypinkknits

    8 жыл бұрын

    +krrobu - yes, wool knits always need to be set out flat to dry (blocked) after every washing. Luckily, wool doesn't need frequent washing...really only at the end of the wearing season, or if you spill something on it.

  • @vinefee8199

    @vinefee8199

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Mega MindyLou Yes, you can simply pull out the lifelines when you don't need them any more. Just don't rip at them to hard. You'll see, it's easy and helps a lot :)

  • @verypinkknits

    @verypinkknits

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Mega MindyLou - Yes, +MohnBlumenBlau has it right...the lifelines easily slide out when you're finished knitting. It's a good idea to remove them before you wash and block, just in case there might be any color transfer from the lifeline yarn when the shawl is wet.

    Hello Satci I have followed your videos and made some lovely projects. This particular shawl I love and am trying to follow it buy I get confused as you are saying it is 16 row repeat but the chart shows 5 rows. Also of you could also say how many stitches to cast on also would benefit people. That is my suggestion. Thank you for telling about the life line but more focus on knitting the shawl would be helpful.

She says in the pattern to repeat 6 times more, which i did, It is not long enough. Do you have any advice? Do I need to do more than recommended. I only have 25 inches. This is the section with no increases.

    You can work the repeat more times than six, provided you have enough yarn for it! You will also likely get more length during the blocking process.

    QUESTION: So, I'm a left-handed mirror knitter. I would consider myself an advanced beginner (I made the honeybear hoodie from your videos without much problem), but I'm confused on how to make something like this work for the left handed knitters. If I did it the way the pattern is written would it just be mirrored and come out fine (the lace on the right instead of the left like in the video) or is this a project that I would have to re-write to work "backwards". I already know that I have to read the charts different because I'm working the rows from the opposite ends. I've heard some people say that lefties shouldn't even attempt lace unless they can knit right-handed, so I'm very hesitant to enter that world. Thanks!

  • @verypinkknits

    @verypinkknits

    8 жыл бұрын

    +careybarey06 - I think you should be able to work this without too much difficulty, since it's a flat piece of knitting. (Following patterns, in-the-round, mirror-style, can get more complicated.) You can knit the pattern as written, but yes - the lace will end up along the right edge instead of the left. And yes - read the chart in the opposite way from how I teach in the video - odd number (RS) rows from L to R. I think that should take care of it...honestly, it's been a while since I've helped a mirror knitter with patterns on a regular basis, so I hope I'm not out of practice! If there are any complications, you'll be able to see them within the first few rows.

    +Gari Lidh - yes, you can leave all of the lifelines in place until you finish knitting the shawl. You can see in the video and give it a try yourself - it is easy to avoid knitting the lifeline into the subsequent row. It would actually be kind of difficult to do that.

    +Gari Lidh as long as you use a contrasting color im not sure how you'd accidentally stitch the lifeline into the work...

    +VeryPink Knits I've actually done that and had a hard time not picking it up with the new stitches. It gets wrapped around the chord and I've had to keep trying to move it out of the way. Thank you so much for your great instructions!

    Linda Hobart - yes, it's a good idea to use a contrasting color and watch what you're doing on the row following a lifeline, so that you don't knit the lifeline into the work. If it does happen accidentally, the work is not ruined, you can still remove the lifeline.

    hi staci! big fan here! i’m new to knitting and blocking, and was wondering for this shawl if you have to block after every time you wash? i was just thinking, if that’s the case, wouldn’t that make knitting projects a pain for the receiver of your gift...so i hope the answer is no! thanks

    It depends on the yarn you use - you'll want to follow the washing instructions on the yarn. Animal fibers that require hand washing and laying flat to dry don't require a lot of washing unless you spill something on them.

    Do you always have to block lace or is it because it is wool? This will be my first lace project.

    You pretty much always want to block lace, so that the lace pattern really separates and shows well.

    This shawl, because it has lace in it, will require a little blocking each time to really show off the lace.

    So can you block lace made with acrylic?

  • @verypinkknits

    @verypinkknits

    It sort of depends on the acrylic, but for the best results in lace, knit with wool. When the wool is wet you can really open up the lace pattern so that it shows like it should.

    Guys, don't slack on the lifelines. I'm restarting this for the FOURTH time because I figured I could work through this slowly enough to avoid making a mistake. I'm stupid and lifelines are good. This fourth attempt will have lots of lifelines.
