    Did you notice the original trailer had a rollup door that they left in place? If you look at the picture that you showed of the original pully setup, you will see a bracket that holds the wheel in the door track, you can also see a hinge between two of the roll up door panels, further you can see that they pinched off the track so the door couldn't roll back down, and they also used the track to reinforce the framing for the ramp. Thumbs up this so he will see it.

    I have to agree with Ravennbar. Talking to anybody that was involved with the show, to them, it was just a job. They had no idea it would have turned into a pop culture phenomenon, and still be followed after damn near 40 years. These were props. Once their usefulness was fulfilled, in some cases, dire things happened to those props. (The cars, for example.) The fact this thing still exists at all, much less the tractor, is surprising.

    Hi Joe. I think it's safe to say that the FLAG Semi ramp has been given a different makeover over the years, even when Knight Rider ended, including the Pulleys. So, maybe there's evidence that all of this happened: The missing Pulleys, the incorrect ramp panel, iconic bolts on the sides, and others. Let's have hope and faith now that everything's gonna be exactly how it was on the show. I HOPE it will for sure. Thanks once again, guys!👍

    This is just SO cool! I always wondered how they made the mechanism for the ramp. (I'm building a Lego technic version of the Semi in 1:17 atm.) As far as I know, we never really see the ramp doing it's full opening or closing cycle. We also never see the moment when it shuts close. I always thought, they just pulled the extensions out by hand while the ramp was open, and they'd fall back in by gravity, when the ramp closes. But the winch and the batteries in the back (which you can see at 20:14) tell another story. So my guess is, that they made a cable pulley system. When the winch pulls the cable, the extensions get pushed out. and when the cable gets released either they go back in when the ramp is lifted by their weight or the have some springs that pull them back in slowly as the winch releases the cable. But no matter what mechanism they built- we know now that there WAS a mechanism, which is just really cool to know!

    Is there any chance that the original door still exists somewhere? I think you said in a previous video that the trailer was used to transport boats? Presumably the boat people removed the door because it wasn’t useful (the car people wouldn’t have done so surely). In my experience, boat yards are full of random pieces of metal. Maybe it’s still rusting away in some marina.

    Looking at the winch pulleys system from the photo of footage your looking for, it looks like a modified Ship/boat pully judging by the thickness and it’s length, they wanted a pulley that could hold the weight of the modified door, and speed of its decent and ascent a normal pulley wouldn’t go long before the pulley bearings wore out and need to changed, a thicker heavier duty ship/boat mast/rigging pulley would probably be a more suitable option given it needed to hold back a tone of weight and have a a car slip up and down on an already heavy modified ramp door. I’m betting this pulley is made custom.

    I would like to see under that small ramp section over the "notch". There is a possibility that when they cut the rear beam to make the step down, that they used the material they cut out, flipped it over and rewelded it back to create the notch. This technique is used in hot rods to make frame clearances for headers etc.

    Star Trek story: The Air Force was very interested in the automatic doors. Sent 2 guys out to talk to the show staff to get the engineering diagrams. The Props master looked at them in surprise. "We've got two guys with ropes and pulleys on the other side of the door." You talked about the pulley rope / cables disappearing into the darkness and nothing more was seen. Could it be there was no winch running the pulleys, just "2 guys"?

  • @greggv8

    @greggv8

    2 жыл бұрын

    What's crazy is that Star Trek still uses 2 guys and ropes when off the shelf automatic sliding door mechanisms have been available for decades and even have safety systems so people don't get squished. Could easily replace 2 guys and ropes with one guy and a switch to enable/disable the automatic person sensor or to manually trigger the doors at the right moment as the actors approach. Growing up in the 70's I remember more and more places getting the automatic doors with the big pressure pad to activate them. I was surprised the very first time I encountered an automatic sliding door *without* the big pressure pad. Not seeing that, I reached out to open the door and *woosh* it slid open. I looked up, saw the sensor above the door and thought "Ahh, it's either ultrasonic or infrared.".

    You may not have to re-fabricate an entirely new door. You may be able to modify the existing door to match. And it would be fairly easy to do. You would need some square-tube steel and welding apparatus to complete it, then a sawzall.

    Again, CONGRATULATIONS on finding the trailer. I am still excited about you finding the tractor, but finding both is definitely the proverbial needle in a haystack! Living in the Phoenix metro area, & being close to Firebird Raceway. I am sure I saw the trailer on the road, & didn't even realize it. Firebird Raceway held drag racing, & drag boat events until a few years ago. Maybe one of your studio contacts might be able to help you with finding the schematics you need to help you restore the Flag Semi & Tractor to their former glory. Maybe talking to the right crowd of people at Universal, maybe they might be willing to help you restore the Semi & Trailer in exchange for using the Semi at events. Hello from Phoenix Arizona!🔥

    There doesn't look like enough height above to put a car, unless it's one extremely short in height. More likely they stores extra tires and parts up there, with the big panel swinging down to make it easier to get at stuff.

    @@KnightRiderHistoriansOfficial this had been my first thought too, but then realized it probably provided hydraulic power for the drop ramp inside. But that provides one resource. Since the exact mechanism for dropping the gate is unknown, save those cylinders and hydraulic gear... Maybe it could be recycled into the new drop gate drop system.
