Just make sure you have any more unwanted holes patched up and those brackets on the footer panel that hold the side steps removed before the fresh coat of black! Have the underbody rust-removed and primed/painted too and bend the landing gear handle bracket back into shape. Keep on checking those screenshots! Can't wait to see the wheels painted black!

Hey Joe this looks great! Make sure u don't wait to long with priming the aluminium. it's blasted now so the aluminium will start forming a oxide layer, which is very hard to deal with. Also make sure u use a correct primer and paint system. I have painted aluminium trailers before with Standox fleet. this a professional paint system formulated for trucks and trailers, ie big aluminium surfaces. Most big paint brands have a fleet line just for trucks.

Regardless of if he wants to filler so it looks perfect or if the show look “has dents” I would suggest removing the filler to not only inspect how think it is (you don’t want more than 1/4” thick, or it will be prone to fail) but as a body man you never trust anyone else’s work. It needs removed and redone regardless for that reason

yes, over all the episodes, the must of been many cameras mounts temporally stuck all over the place, that could possibly explain every random grouping of holes, that brings up a question, is there a standard cameras mount, that used in the film/tv that uses bots, needing the making of holes? might even be apart that could added back, to the trailer, too?

Aluminium needs etch primer, not regular primer. Etch is good on clean steel too, though not essential. The etch primer then gets covered with regular primer. If you use regular primers on aluminium, galvanised steel or some other metals, it’ll flake off later. The rough texture from the blasting will help adhesion, though.

The sandblasting hose nozzle isn't that big and also just because it came off easy in some areas doesn't mean it came of easily in others. My biggest concern it needs to be epoxyed primed asap , it really needs to go to a professional truck place and then take care of any repairs after at home.

Primer is typically formulated to be porous so the top coat can adhere as well as possible. Accordingly, the protection from rusting it offers is better than nothing but very far from ideal. If you selected something that does seal, that would be best for the steel parts since it's outdoors.

As a body man I will suggest this about the body filler. If you end up wanting the dents finding them from the show I would suggest removing the filler regardless. That looks like typical bondo brand filler wich is cheap crap but aside from that never trust someone else’s filler work (you don’t know the prep they did to make the repair and if it was done right). Tear it out to redo it and make sure it’s repaired correctly as well. You don’t want more than about a 1/4” of filler in any area or it will be prone to failing over time

  • @salland12

It seems to me that to return the semi "to it's former glory" would mean fixing the imperfections like dents.

Definitely not! Those dents are history from its production use. We are restoring the outside to its exact configuration when the cameras stopped rolling in 1986....to include the dents!

This is so fascinating seeing sandblasting at this scale. Do you order up so much sand at the beginning or is it measured by how much was used?

The blasting company calculated how much we would need. It's actually glass beads not sand. They did a fantastic job so far!

@@KnightRiderHistoriansOfficial when it's done you could run a tiller across the yard where the glass bead is to get it all mixed in, then rake in grass seed to grow that patch into some very nice grass.
