One of the best things about what you are doing to the trailer is not only restoring the exterior to exactly what it looked like on screen, but also recreating the studio set on the inside. When finished, it will actually be even better than what it was on screen! Truly an amazing effort to every little detail. Great work so far!

Very detailed explanation with reference points. I enjoy this sort of thing. I ran some numbers and it appears the studio didn't just scale up the set. I think they just made it up. The set is about 12% wider and 24% longer than the semi it portrayed. You know what this means? Yes, the Hoff would actually be 5'1" and a bit fat.

Huh!... How I understand that! Today one can make a professional TV/movie camera that fits in a common drone, or elsewhere coupled with a wireless transfer system that is really smart and small! That time from the mid 70's to the mid 80's even the most portable ones would require such a shoulder supported 7Kg (15.432 lbs) set for the filming equipment itself plus a separate 3Kg (6.614 lbs) set for the tape recorder (I learnt some TV filming techniques on the mid 80's with one of those cameras here in Portugal)! A portable TV/movie set would require 2 individuals to operate at that time, while today they can be robotic, then commanded from the control station!... Of course the studio should to be larger than the truck itself, at least giving up the proper space for the professional equipment of the times to be put inside!... One thing that one can make is such a recreation of what the real set should have been in reality with materials available out there. Will it will be really possible? We are awaiting the next chapters!...

According to a behind-the-scenes special I watched, for the original Star Wars, Lucas planned the interior of the Millennium Falcon first, and the exterior "shell" used in the Mos Eisley scenes was _intended_ to be actual size. But the builders misread the plans, and it wound up only being 60% of full size. There wasn't time to build another one, so they had to plan their shots to try and hide the fact that the ship was almost half the size it was supposed to be.

Scaling it down is clever and probably the best thing to do accuracy wise. I was thinking another way to get around it would be to have a section that slides out when the trailer is stationary, you know how some higher end R/V's have the lounge section that slides out to give more space inside.

I’ve been driving trucks for almost 18 years and watching this video I noticed that the measurements you gave were more in line with a 53’ by 104” trailer. Just makes you wonder if universal didn’t base their set measurements on a different trailer not realizing that they were not the same size.

Scaling down the set will be fine. When people visit news desk or game show sets, the most common thing they usually say is how much bigger it looks on TV and smaller in person. Because it is. The camera makes sets look bigger the same way it adds weight to people. So a set being smaller works within that perception. And in any case, it only looked bigger on TV because the cameras had to have room to shoot. Without cameras, it does not need to be AS big. Smaller will work fine.

  • @LatitudeSky

    @LatitudeSky

    2 жыл бұрын

The second most common thing people say about seeing sets in person is how much more shabby they look in person. Cardboard pieces, paint work from kindergarten kids, and everything behind the camera looking like the house down the road where the crazy guy lives who never mows his yard. I've been on news sets where the studio walls were bare drywall with graffiti and the floor paint was peeling up in sheets and the place smelled like a dump. Nobody cared as long as the actual set looked good on camera. And it did. As close as possible to 100% of the budget was spent on that side of the lens. The non-air parts of TV stations are often barely above code violation level.

Amazingly enough, people will notice if the proportions are crazy, unless you fit that into canon somehow (the TARDIS being the easiest example). So the set WAS huge, but the parts where people moved around were kept reasonable. They _were_, after all, in a trailer. They just took advantage of the fact that people would think of the width of a road lane, but not really conceive of the height and front to back dimensions of a tractor/trailer right.

for the new A/C maybe some type of mini split. can put the condenser unit in one of the understorage compartments, and the head unit could be disguised in a cabinet or something. seen some covert camper/van channels do this, with different degrees of stealth in their design. might have to open doors when you wanted to use it, but would help keep the original screen look, with some moden creature comforts hidden out of sight.

I'm glad you're going to be able to replicate the set in the trailer without too many compromises. I figured you'd prioritize the main office over the lounge and just move the dividing wall forward to make the main section longer to fit it more. You current plan sounds very workable though. I'd imagine that just having some bungee cords in a drawer to hold the chairs in place during transport would be fine. You can use the existing hardware made for campers and RVs for the cabinets and such to make sure they're held closed.

At 14:45, there appears to be standard 2' drop ceiling tiles or some kind of panel that I would assume to be that common size. So, taking the 96 inches that those would measure, plus a bit on each side, I think the actual set would be a bit more than 104 inches. I would say closer to 112 inches, based on what I am going by. It'll have to be scaled down as planned, and that's going to be a lot of custom work, but it is going to be awesome!

A small mini split unit would be a good choice. Hide the inside part out of the way where the air can still flow. Hide the outside part in the belly box area. All you have to connect between them are some small hose lines. They can be had well under $1000, DIY install, 120v and most heat and cool all in one. Probably need two small systems for the whole trailer.

There is plenty of people here that will watch virtually anything, and that is for an indeterminate amount of time. They will continue to watch these types of videos, and yes there are others that have virtually no breaks for commentary, only a little comment here and there. It’s like the opposite of watching paint dry, except for certain people enjoy the paint drying part, and the actual painting not so much. While I am with the paint drying, yes people actually watch paint drying, even though most of the ones posted are faked by looping. So, not only have people watched paint drying, but also caught people cheating. Keep these videos coming, they are relaxing, and with your expertise, they are a learning experience also. Three thumbs up for you 👍👍

This is really cool! When watching the show I thought the trailer interior stage might be substantially wider than the actual trailer - I am glad that the difference is actually not as big and that you will be able to shrink the layout a bit to make it fit.

I have wondered this for yearrrrrrrs while understanding this is hollywood movie magic. Joe, this would be badass, and i support your enthusiasum with optimisim and a vision much like your owns, but ive always known this was a set ever since being a fan way back n the 80s. Im gonna hold to that enthusiasm and faith that you can make this happen cause u would have a REMARKABLE piece of t.v. history from an all-out 80s action series that rose from the time of the all american stunt man long before all of this C.G.I. crap, so BEST OF LUCK my man. Keep at it, cause in the end, only YOU will have this, and I just cant wait to see your car roll up in this trailer. Just plain SICK!!

Much like The Brady Bunch house, the same was done to The Christmas Story house in Cleveland - matching the interior to the soundstage.

Save those paint chips. Seriously, they will come in handy later. 1. You can use them when it comes time to paint match the original color. 2. Fundraising. Save the paint chips and any original metal scrap materials you can. Then at some point put together a limited number of collectors packages containing small pieces of the trailer(or even bits from the truck or cars) to either sell or auction off. Make sure to include photos and certificates of authenticity/provenance. Remember what you might consider garbage is a treasure to someone else. For the paint chips I'd suggest portioning them out into small sealed containers. Use something like the Air-tites Coin Capsules.

My back broke in half watching you lift that A/C unit lol. That thing was a lot bigger than it looked at first. Totally loved watching the frame turboboosting out the door! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I honestly thought it was going to be a tighter squeeze with the trailer, but it looks like it'll work good for you. I'd consider leaving a little more space between the garage area and office. Seems like you'll be able to do that by sacrificing a little lounge space maybe. Don't work too hard Joe, I think it's getting to you a little. Even Michael managed to get in a little vacation time. Peace bro. Everything you do is appreciated. I think it will pay off in the end. We love you buddy. (Pssst, my Kitt car talks to me too sometimes, but don't tell anyone)

I'm watching this video about 3 days late and I just have to say clever clever on how you guys are going to do this and it's awesome that you guys are going to get as much of the set that you can into this When you guys are done it will be a masterpiece and I can't wait until I see your KITT in the completed trailer

Here’s something to consider; might be nice to be able to put 2 black T/A’s in one trailer. Make the set pieces some what easily removable then you can tote both of your cars if the need arises.

  • @halko1

8:46 I don't find that strange at all. I expect KITT to be a little bit shy sometimes when there are other people around, but when it's just two of you, I expect KITT to talk. It just makes sense. Heck, for whatever reason, KITT even talks to me sometimes via commlink. And then we need to save the world. But I already told too much, it's classified.

If you're going to try and keep it at a sensible temperature in US summers, you'll want to scale back your interior another inch at least to have some insulation in the walls. Also: Quite a few trucks these days mount their reefers under the body over here in Europe, you could do the same I think, a water proof box underneath between the legs and the axles for the main unit and there's various options for the interior: Concealed minisplit units built into the wall units, vents and under-body ducting... Not sure on the legality of underbody mounting in the US, but it's fine here if it's behind the side impact bars.

Usually the dividers are a trim to hold the panels, it is two piece and the cap snaps to the back part to hide the fasteners, so the two inch could be more one or half inch between panels, hope this helps.
