    You are awesome Mike! These FAQs help so much. I've been making knives for a little over five months and I keep coming back to you when I'm screaming four letter words. I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge and experience in your craft. Keep up the great work!

    Great video. +1 on the hand sanding. I have the same OCD about scratches. I just sold a Bushcraft knife I made and spent probably about 2 hrs fixing scratches I do one direction only with oil from 150-400+. Going only one direction with the oil keeps my tool marks down and seems to help give a uniform finish

    Great channel I am planning to watch all these in the few days before I get my operation . I am getting all the info before I start any Knifemaking I will be building my own grinder as this is only to keep my hands and brain working and is something I have been interested in this for along time but I am now having to slow down as I am in a wheelchair so my workshop has to be built low so I can do most operations sat down . More so in a few weeks as I wont be much good in an ass kicking least wise till i get my plastic one . Just wanted you to know between yourself and Walter Sorrels give a nice balanced view and alot of great tutorials that are interesting and informative . For a youg man you are a great inspiration keep it up bud .I will also be sending to the states for my belt and watching your video on abrasives it will save me the wrong call from here in the UK I could only buy 2 belts for the same price I can get 10 from the US this country as per usual this country are about 10 years behind on equiptment metals ect keep up the great work bud PS. you said on one of your videos you were thinking of leather sheaths there is a great leatherworker called Bruce Cheaney he does some great tutorials one letaherworking , stamping tools ect you may want to check him out.

    I agree with the feeing of taking a blank piece of steel and turning out something that someone actually wants to purchase. I have also evolved into making leather sheaths for my knives.

    Great video Mike. Also people, don't forget that if a blade has super edge retention, it's going to take a long time to sharpen from dull. So be sure to strop and touch up those blades frequently.

    Mike, in one of your future tutorial could you show and explain how grind a stright bevel? I find very difficult grind a part of the blade also if i calculate angle as you explained. Other question: when you finish blade by your hand you use grit paper perpendiculari to bevel?

    In one of your videos you had a heat treating oven, did it not work out for you? I was interested in that type of oven for at least tempering.

    Going back to cork non-grit belts...do you suppose to break them up with or without polishing compound on?

    Holy crap dude that is a long time... try this, do your base grinding, clean up with 120 then coat every where that you are grinding with blue dye > 220 or 65x blue dye > 45x and then 800p (Rhinowet redline paper w/ WD-40). As long as there is no dye left after your 45x belt the scratches always comes off with 800p paper I rarely use more than 3/4 of a sheet for a chef size knife. I mostly use 1085, 1095, O1 and w2 steel which i know are softer than your stainless steels. Im steeping my game up with some s35-vn soon so maybe i'll be in for a bad surprise. -Chris

    Mike, have you figured out a way to consistently do a tanto grind? I have tried several times and keep blowing it. It seems like it has to be something simple I'm screwing up. I just can't seem to get the line from the top of the grind to go cleanly across the grind to the bottom of the grind at the front, bottom corner. Any tips?

  • @palangimiko
    @palangimiko7 жыл бұрын

    When hand sanding, how do you get a mirror finish without the lines going across the blades? I start at 60 grit, and go all the way up to 2000 grit and I still have the lines that run the length of the blade if you look at it from the right angle.

    nice work fella. That's a wicked tan too. As for the edge retention question. I think people need to stop using this term. Abrasion resistance. This we know. Edge retention is much more complicated. Multifactoral. And abrasion resistance is only one part of it. Also abrasion resistance is not very important as far as properties go. I think it's so over rated by knife bros is because most of them don't know how to sharpen. Thats my hunch. They're looking for magic. Same way kids these days looking for magic stones with vitrium bonded diamond, even though half of them don't even know how to sharpen a knife. Also the margin these middle men get on Chinese knives ain't $20, unless you're talking about a knife that costs $30. They're buying in bulk for even today with the higher prices than it used to be, under $10 a pop and selling these things for anywhere from $50-$150.

    here is a tip...dont drop your surface grinder on your finger....by local ABS journeyman smith/mentor Stephan Fowler of Fowler Blades did that...results disfigured finger and a 1700 lb or so paperweight...
