How to hollow grind a knife. Part 4 refining the scratch pattern.

This video shows how I clean up the scratches and move up in grits to a finished blade. I also cover how I blend in my plunge lines.

    Very good instructions on pressure on the blade that most videos don't show.

    I really appreciate the time you take to make and edit your videos. they really inspire me. just wondering if you could possibly one day make a video about the pheer grinder and you recomended setup. there really aren't any videos that have given me the confidence to pull the trigger on the purchase. again keep up the good work you are a great craftsman.

    +Rebecca Yates Thank you for the kind words! What would you like to see about the pheer? A review maybe? Or are you looking for more of a full setup like what is necessary to get started? I'll start here with some of my thoughts on 2x72 grinders to get you going. They are all pretty much the same machine just executed a little different. The best advice I can give is to find one you can afford and just get one. Variable speed is definitely worth the extra cost and a 1.5 hp - 2 hp motor. You really don't need anything bigger than that and I wouldn't go smaller. As far as my favorite grinder goes, it would be the tw-90 for its added features but they come at a hefty price tag. I typically recommend 4 brands. tw90, wilmont tag 101, the kmg, and the pheer. The tag 101 is another great grinder but again a hefty price tag. So that leaves the kmg and the pheer which are priced pretty competitively. The kmg is like the honda civic of grinders...you can get parts almost anywhere and they are reliable. As far as the pheer goes, I don't have any regrets. It fit my budget, the maker had great customer service, and the machine just plain works. I will say that the work rest is garbage so plan on upgrading that down the road with a DD work rest. So to sum it up, I'd say pick one of those 4 makes, get the variable speed option, you'll want a wheel package upfront (10 inch is fine) and get the small wheel attachment. (buy once cry once lol ) They are all great machines and will improve your knife making by leaps and bounds. I hope that helps!

    Mike, I have been making knives for 13 years (Reeves Knives), and I have viewed most all of your videos lately. You have my highest respect. You have taught me thinks that I wish I had discovered years ago, particularly the hollow grind. I am a school teacher by profession, and I must say, that you are and excellent teacher. I have a You Tube video under: Reeves Knives Utility, Part 1 - 8. My videos are no where close to yours. Thanks again.

    +cliff reeves Thank you very much Cliff that means the world to me! I look up to you experienced makers and it can be quite difficult at times to earn the respect of the seasoned makers while sharing what I learn as I learn it. Don't sell yourself short on the videos! I haven't seen a knife making video yet that didn't have something to take away from it!

    Thanks for your videos bud. I'm completely new to this and am trying to learn as much as I can. I was using jigs n am now trying free hand. I was using a harbor freight 1x30 n just got me a grizzly 2x72 love it but having to adjust to the bigger machine. Ur tutorial on hollow grinding gave me the courage to try it. See how I do lol. Keep up the good work.

    Great videos, I've watched a bunch and I learn the most from you. Do you leave the final edge on the knife at 1 mm and then sharpen from there or do you grind it smaller than 1mm?

    Thanks Mike, question, exactly what makes that small radius develop at the top of the plunge where it intersects with the perpendicular grind line? Thanks again for taking the time producing and sharing such informative tutorials. BRAVO!!

    Would love to see some closer overhead shots of bumping the belt to round the plunge line. I struggle with this often and even when the belt is overhanging, the edge of the belt digs into the plunge wall and does not seem to ride up or smooth out the line..

    Hey thanks for the video! I actually make straight razors and I wondered if hollow grinding a knife is the same as hollow grinding a straight razor and turns out it's about the same! I'm not sure if ur up to the challenge but u should try to hollow grind a straight razor!

    Thanks again Mike, we learn a ton from these videos. What type of 120 grit belt are you using? The yellow one, I noticed other makers using it as well. Is it the 377 cubitron?

    +icecoalman smith Its a cheap Klingspor belt. They don't last long but for the price and what I use them for they are worth a shot. Here's a link for them: trugrit.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_147_4&products_id=2514&zenid=6183746e06c05ffc50c84525a049e7e0

    I didn't see if that blade has distal taper. What is the easiest way to achieve distal taper along the blade from for instance 5 mm thickness to 2 mm?

  • @EkimKnives

    @EkimKnives

    +Wide Vision Metal Fab Thank you! I usually take it to a minimum of 400 grit all the way on up to 2000 depending on the desired finish. This one is still sitting at 120 but if it survives the process, I may do a video on a two tone finish with a super high gloss grind.

    as usual an awesome video.... got a question concerning the jflex belts.... how flexible are they? have used J and F belts but no JF ones.... so are they really soft like paper and roll over the edge of a platten or the wheel easily? or are they still a little stiff that you have to push to get them in the ricasso? looks like not much force is needed in the video for a nice ricasso..... thx

  • @EkimKnives

    @EkimKnives

    +Fred L They are very soft and will easily conform to most shapes with very little effort. They're paper thin and don't last long but for the price and the flex they are worth it.

    Another brilliant video sir. I need to start back at knife making but in the uk they are hard to sell as Ebay won't let us list them. That's why I'm currently doing a lot of axe builds. If you get time feel free to check out my latest build and maybe subscribe back if you like some of my vids

    +Diesineveryfilm Customs Give it a shot! There is a market for everything and there are some great makers over in the UK who do very well for themselves. Axe making sounds challenging to say the least. I may have to give it a try one of these days.
