Blackening the steel:
A mixture of caustic soda (700g), potasium saltpeter (250g) and water (1,2 l)
The temperature of the solution should be kept between 120 - 140 C.
I keep the knife inside for about 30 minutes to get consistent black colour, you can manipulate the time to achieve different results, shorter period should give you dark brown or purple - ish colour.
Be careful - this mixture is highly corrosive!
Heat treatment:
-Austenizing temperature: 830 C
-Tempering: 180 C
Specs:
Philosopher
Steel: 80CrV2 5 mm
Length: 285 mm

I really like how you pre texture your steel by etching with a resist before grinding the bevel! That would have looked really good on my Spartan 300 sword build. I am definitely going to try that on some future builds. Every time I watch your videos I learn something! Great content, great music, and great edit Thanks man. Cheers

Damn I love it!! What a craftsmanship! Do you mind if I ask what are you doing with the handle materials, what process is that.
How is it possible that you will grind it so beautifully? Is there a procedure?
I love your work! You’ve been a huge inspiration to me. Thank you for showing how you do the resist to ferric chloride to get the awesome texture. When you were using the pot were you hot bluing the knife?
@BarbershopCustoms
4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. To prevent any acid from biting into a chosen area of steel we use spray paint, but e.g. nail polish or ca will work too :) yes, that's hot bluing, the prescription is in the description 😊

A wonderful work and a great knife. Also thanks for that relaxing music like in the middle age. I have a question, do you not sweat in this gloves... I do.
@BarbershopCustoms

Yes, we do sweat, but it's still worth it since you don't need to wash your hands that long after work :) Not to mention the health of the skin (chemicals and stuff)
Nice work and the knife is beautiful and strong, please, how did you make the knife black in color?
How durable is that blackened finish? Regardless of its durability, it is a pretty blade.
Awesome knife, I love the design of your blade ! Thanks for the great video ! Can I expect any results of blackening with this solution without heating it ?

You make great knives. Well done. What is your cooking recipe to keep the blade so black?
@BarbershopCustoms

It's in the description :)
Wow! Awesome knife and video! Questions: What was the paste that you used to polish the handle after oiling? What did you use to darken the spine/tang? I have tried that with Ferric Chloride and it often darkens the handle material, too. Thank you!
@BarbershopCustoms
4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Any fine car polishing paste will do the job. We used cold bluing to darken the spine. Ferric chloride may indeed darken the scales, but if you do it carefully and the scales are properly soaked with an oil, you can prevent it 😊

Hi @Barbershop Customs . I would like to ask some questions. Is your blackening solution reusable or you have to make a new one each time you "cook" the knife? What is the black residue that you put on the blade before heat treatment and why are you doing it? Is it supposed to stop the carbon oxidation that could occur when heating the steel?
@BarbershopCustoms
3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is reusable until it isn't :D The knife will turn green instead of black when it's wasted. It's an anti decarb paste
