The making of a fancy viking styled knife.
Please note that this is not an attempt to a historical reconstruction, it's just our fantasy of how a very fancy viking knife could look like :)
The fluted handle was certainly a challenge, but I'm happy with how it came out.

How to blacken steel (hot oxide):
A mixture of caustic soda (700g), potasium saltpeter (250g) and water (1,2 l)
The temperature of the solution should be kept between 120 - 140 C.
I keep the knife inside for about 30 minutes to get consistent black colour, you can manipulate the time to achieve different results, shorter period should give you dark brown or purple - ish colour.
Be careful - this mixture is highly corrosive!
Heat treatment:
-Austenizing temperature: 830 C
-Tempering: 180 C
Thanks to Kyle Royer for showing the fluting process, check out his channel:

Que trabalho esplendoroso! Magnífico! Dizem que o calcanhar de Aquiles do cuteleiro é o cabo, pelo visto, este não é o seu problema. Rico em detalhes, o cuidado com a simetria dos chanfros, a inteligência no uso das formas geométricas. E não posso deixar de destacar o zelo na arte da fiação. Por causa desse seu vídeo, eu me inscrevi no seu Canal, gostei muito. Parabéns! Que Deus continue lhe abençoando! Eloy - Brazil

I really like this build. Question, why not tape or pinstripe your radiused handle lines? Nice work. Amazing piece. Thank you.
@BarbershopCustoms
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I believe taping wouldn't do much :)
I can't figure out the butt end of the handle. Are there 2 open holes in the end? Is that going to get tap so you can screw in a end cap of some sort? Beautiful knife made by a true craftsman with God given gifts.
@BarbershopCustoms
3 жыл бұрын
There are 2 holes, but one is halfway through, so that it's not visible after everything is glued together ;)
How much time is needed for Austenizing and tempering ? Thank you in advance. I like your work.

Wonderful and amazing work, I have a question: What is the name of the hot liquid in the fifth minute?
@BarbershopCustoms
3 жыл бұрын
It's in the description
Why do you harden it before beveling the blade on the belt sander? - Mostly hardening is after the shapeing is done.
@BarbershopCustoms
3 жыл бұрын
It's easier to deal with decarb that way
Man as always your knives are a knife makers dream, recommend you to everyone i know, one thing but there is a tapping chuck that you can get for your drill and or mill, it taps when you pull down and reverses when you let the pressure off, i am a fitter and use them at work and they are one of my favourite tools in the shop, check them out will send you a link if i can find one. Keep up the awesome knives, wish you did more video i know your guy's are busy but you make the best knives along with shurup. Keep safe.
@BarbershopCustoms
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! We don't do as much tapping to buy a chuck for it, two holes are no problem to do by hand, though I appreciate the advice! :)
Hello, is the equipment you use in cooking the steel chrome material?
Wow very nice 🤩, but why did you heat treat befor sanding ?
@BarbershopCustoms
3 жыл бұрын
Coz we don't have to deal with the carb that way. And it saves some time, coz you don't need to clean the surface after HT, which basically comes down to handsanding the blade once again :)

Elforyn Super Tusk is a synthetic ivory that has a grain structure and “Schreger lines” (growth rings). Try here www.elforyn.info/en/ ,or here www.makermaterialsupply.com/collections/elforyn-super-tusk-ivory-substitute.
