KIROV CLASS LARGE NUCLEAR POWERED MISSILE CRUISER BRIEF - NO. 60

The Kirov class, Soviet designation Project 1144 Orlan (sea eagle), is a class of nuclear-powered guided missile cruisers of the Soviet Navy and Russian Navy, the largest and heaviest surface combatant warships (i.e. not an aircraft carrier or amphibious assault ship) in operation in the world. Among modern warships, they are second in size only to large aircraft carriers, and of similar size to a World War I era battleship. The Soviet classification of the ship-type is "heavy nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser" (Russian: тяжёлый атомный ракетный крейсер). The ships are often referred to as battlecruisers by Western defence commentators due to their size and general appearance.

Beautiful ships. The last lineage of the surface combatant capital ship. When they're gone, the entire lineage of battleships or battlecruisers will be truly gone.

I don't know. Considering all the sh*t-talking going across the Pacific over the last decades, either side might decide that the vast distances & size the Opponent might justify something way bigger than anything the enemy has.

Probably the most dangerous surface ship to date.

Would have made sense as a fleet flagship instead of the abused future special underwater ship. But neither they would have been able to maintain. Like with software devs, people need to understand its one level to build a cool thing but a whole different level to maintain and upgrade it.

The US recommissioned EACH of the Iowas for the cost of ONE new Oliver Hazzard Perry class frigate. That is at hardly "vast resources" to refit those four ships.

wish the RN would have something like it

Why? These ships are very expensive glass cannons designed to threaten a carrier surrounded by its carrier group before the carriers strike group gets in their almost inevitable revenge. Who's carriers does the the RN have to deter using *surface* combatants? Wouldn't it make a lot more sense to have several smaller ships around the size of an Arleigh Burke class? It's not like the need a sea going platform large enough to mount 18" guns on.

Incredible ships and, with the Onyx missile & new sensors, more dangerous than ever. However, I wonder if the Russians regret rebuilding them instead of making new Aircraft Carriers, now that they might have to spend another billion dollars on repairing the 40 year old Admiral Kuznetsov.

There is a new crusier that is coming into service for tge Russian federation i think in 2021 late. It is armed to the teeth with some of the most up to date weaponry i have ever seen on a warship. I understand that there are to be three of these built in the next couple of years and undstand that the second has already strated, It has some really powerful armament and plenty of it to the point where i think it near impossible to get near it with an aircraft and also not something you would want to get close to with a sub either . It has something under the quarterdeck that is a real killer, and any sub zproaching the ship while this is in operation ,is just asking for trouble. What with this and the three new subs to come on line during 2021 with tbe new drive system that is considered by NATO as being noiseless, i just wonder what else is being built in St.Petersburg.
