I’m in a small campingsite in Bouillon, by a river called the Semois. Surrounded by the forest that was once home to Godfrey and Baldwin. +Real Crusades History nice video and great facts just one mistake Edessa was a greek city, it was founded by Alexander the Great who brought settlers from Greece it was populated by Armenians many centuries later.Since you mentioned the siege of Antioch you could also mention the Holy Lance "madness" with the Peter Bartholomew (Pierre Barthélemy) visions and how it lifted the crusaders morale !!!

+Lady Kostoula Glad you enjoyed the video, but I was not wrong about Edessa. There are several cities of Edessa, and the one that Baldwin took control of in 1198 was in fact in Mesopotamia. Indeed, it was a largely Greek-speaking city populated by Armenians, so you were right there.

Hopefully, this comment will be seen as a helpful effort, rather than a criticism. Seminaries were not in existence until after the Council of Trent. Before that, one studied at the University, and lived in the Bishop's home. RQ

Hello Mr. J Stephen, I just want to ask what are the best books or sources for learning more about the leaders of the first Crusade, Internet sources are heavily limited to basic facts (like: so and so was at this battle in this year) and fail usually to "get in the dirt" of these men's lives and motivations. Its okay to brag if this channel is the best source (because so far it is) but what are your recommendations?

I love these longer ones man. Your cadence is perfect for me. Often I get so overwhelmed with tid bits. This allows me to think about what your saying, and connecting the overall dynamics, with your guidance. Thanks for your videos, I really like them. One thing that I would wish is that you show more maps, I dont always have the location of all citys and invasion routes in my head.

It was not rare for a Nobleman to be educated during that period. The concept of everyone being uneducated during that time is mostly a Renaissance myth. Of course, people were not as educated as they were during Antiquity, the Reinaissance and the Modern Age, but during the times of the Crusades it was still considered to be a disgrace for a Nobleman if he was not educated enough to at the very least be able to read and write Latin.

Yeah, I kind of mentioned that in the video. What I meant was he had a heavily literary education normally reserved for the clergy. Your typical knight at that time would have had a more basic education involving some Latin, but Baldwin got the full-on priestly education since he was originally intended for the priesthood. All his life he had an exhaustive knowledge of Latin literature and church law.

Osvath97 Yeah, and you're definitely right, that is a common misconception, that the Western nobility were not educated. That's why when I said it, I tried to kind of clarify that he got a heavier literary education than was common at that time. And thanks very much, glad you like the videos!

heh actually friend the levele of 'high education' is during antiquity is also a myth created much centuries later, level of education and scientific develompent during medieval period was much higher than in antiquity actually even concept of scholarship that we use today is medieval concept (elementary medium high and highest/college) just like universiteis are, greets

This definitely changed my mind of Baldwin. He seems like a pretty ood guy, considering the middle ages.

You didn't mention how Baldwin obtained Edessa. He allowed its leader to be assassinated and the man who introduced the two to be tortured to death. I cannot take these cruel methods to be the acts of a genuinely pious knight.

Im reading Thomas Madden's "Concise History of the Crusades", and i have the Holy Lance on my amazon wish list. Its getting hard to remember who controlled what territories when (and during which crusade), and who was related to who. Do you know if an infographic exists that outlines these?

I think Godfrey had different intentions than Baldwin. Godfrey seemed true to what the one mission of taking Jerusalem. Baldwin, was a pious man, but seemed to have a thirst for not just conquest, but ruling large portions of land. Regardless of that, I like Baldwin as well. The younger of two other great men, destined to have a bit more from inheritance etc. He made himself much more than what he was destined to be, that is always a fascinating thing.

I asked you question no too long ago about Israel and Palestine in which who does the land belong to and you told me you already made a video about this subject but I couldnt find it on your playlist can you give the link or whatever. Second thing have you read God's Battalions: The Case for the Crusades by Rodney Stark? I saw your suggestions on crusader books so I was curious

I notice you discarded how (if it is actually true, the episode is confusing) Baldwin took Edessa.. however .. putting that aside (for it truly does not matter) Baldwin was amazing. to say the least. and I too see him as an inspiration to anyone of just doing what is right. (and making the means to do so)

How can such a young man be so accomplished ?

I dont think he was such a great person, though he was smart, considering what he did to Tancred in Cilicia. He threatened tancred to give him the city of Adana, which Tancred won on his own in siege. He also does not let Tancreds reinforcements into Adana to stay over night and Tancreds reinforcements are slaughtered because of this terrible act. How can you say Baldwin's achievement eclipsed Godfreys? Godfrey (one of the nine worthies of christendom) was the most prominient leaders of the crusade, baldwin just rode in his coat tales most of the way. Baldwin wasnt even aloud voice in the council of princes along the way because he held no land. He did do a good job setting up the kingdom, your right but this is after Godfrey conquered it. Very good stuff though im looking forward to Baldwin II, Fulk, Baldwin III, and Almaric. Can you do one each on the seperate counties , Antioch, Tripoli, Edessa. Thanks

I'm as much of a fan of Godfrey as anyone. But I think his legend is a lot bigger than what the evidence actually shows us of his life. Of course he died early on, so we don't know much of what kind of a king he would have been. Godfrey's position in the First Crusade army was greatly bolstered by his brother Baldwin's conquest of Edessa, which was one of the most brilliant and outstanding acts of the First Crusade. Baldwin was able to provide the besieging army at Antioch with an abundant supply of horses and funds, which greatly boosted Godfrey's prestige. Once Baldwin took the crown of Jerusalem, he quickly transformed a fragile statelet into a major regional power. His organization of the regime was brilliant, his use of the local people, the clergy, and the army absolutely outstanding. He expanded the territory of the Kingdom immensely. History shows him to cut a far bigger figure than his brother Godfrey in the actual work of founding and building the Kingdom of Jerusalem. He was truly a great king.

He was tolerant of all the different Christian Rites ( Rite of St Basil in Constantinople, Maronite Rite in Syria/Antioch, the Melkite Rite in Jerusalem as well as the Roman Rite. Closer to Egypt they went , they would encounter the Coptic Rite ,etc.).

I'm also a Baldwin, unlikely. Also Baldwin is the English version. Count of Flanders/Boulogne would likely have spoken French if not Flemish. The French version of this would have been Baudouin or Beaudouin which annoys me because I know some douchy Beaudouins.

You are not related. Baldwin was his first name, not his family name. You first should look into your family's origin. You probably stem from England . Baldwin as a family name, originates from Normandy. It means Bold friend or Bold protector. It became a relatively frequent name in England after the Norman conquest in 1066.

actually yes it was his first nam3but after the battle of Hastings in 1066 William the conqueror bestowed baldwin with the right to use his first name as his surname thus the line of baldwin came about i have done extensive research on this subject because i have traced my maiden name to this family.

The first King of the Belgians, Léopold I, built a very big Statue of Godfroid de Bouillon in Brussels. The royal Dynasty in Belgium consider they are all descendants of Godfroid de Bouillon. Baudouin I, II, II, IV . The French took the power after them and it was a catastrophe, they killed Saladin's sister and all the caravans. They were defeated by Saladin and had to leave the the Holy Land

I think it was the Assyrians who invited him since they would have been specifically living on this land the plains of Nineveh

No, Baldwin IV the Leper is a real individual. He was King of Jerusalem from 1174-1185. This video is about Baldwin I of Jerusalem, who was King from 1100-1118.
