Baldwin IV, Leper King who Defeated Saladin - FULL DOCUMENTARY
Baldwin IV, Leper and crusader, was one of the outstanding commanders of his age, and during his life, posed a worthy challenge to the valorous Sultan Saladin. In this titanic struggle, Saladin had considerable advantage - he controlled the territory around Baldwin’s tiny kingdom, and he had far larger armies at his disposal. What’s more, the young King also suffered from a grave illness - leprosy. Despite his disease, and despite the fewness of his men, Baldwin the Leper rode at the head of his knights, sword in hand, battling Saladin’s legions on more than one occasion. Today, we’ll delve into the life, struggles, victories and defeats of this truly remarkable youth. This is Real Crusades History - the life of King Baldwin IV, the Leper King of Jerusalem.

“When I was sixteen I won a great victory. I felt in that moment that I should live to be one hundred, now I know I shall not see thirty. None of us know our end really, or what hand will guide us there. A King may move a man, a father may claim a son. That man can also move himself. And only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played, or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone. Even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power. When you stand before God, you cannot say "but I was told by others to do thus" or that "virtue was not convenient at the time." This will not suffice. Remember that.”

@@dre6289 Honestly, I think he could have been an even greater man. His mentor William of Tyre always spoke highly of him (and expressed great regret that Baldwin got leprosy). Baldwin was one of the more well-read kings at the time, was astute, kindhearted, and was well-liked as a child by all. He just had a natural charisma about him. The leprosy forced him to expedite his rule and forced him to look for successors, so he never really got a chance to truly live the life he should have. But being out on the battlefield with his men probably made him feel like his life was worth living.

@@celuiquipeut6527 I didn't disagree or dispute that he wouldn't be the same man, simply that he would have been an even greater man without the illness given how much he was able to accomplish while sick. From a moral standpoint, I believe the illness made him stronger in his beliefs and faith because every day could have been his last, but had he not had the illness, I think he'd have been able to accomplish much more in his life and would have probably been able to rally even more Christians to rally to Jerusalem's aid had he been healthy. His illness unfortunately altered his trajectory in life and made some people look down him as an inferior man. It was God's will and no one can dispute that, but I think given his moral character, he still would have eventually ended up reaching the level of renown. He was just that good of a man.
It’s a shame he was afflicted with a horrible disease. He was a handsome man, as was a trait of his family, but the leprosy ravaged his looks. He was wise, a great man, and would of made a great king. He already defeated Saladin at the age of 16.

King Baldwin IV did not deserve to be called or to be remembered as the "Leper King", it's disrespectful. His capabilities and accomplishments as a king should not be overshadowed by this illness. He was a king, like the rest of the great kings who lived before, during, and after his time. People must focus on his achievements, strength and bravery as a knight of the cross instead of what killed him. King Baldwin IV must be remembered as the defender of his beloved Jerusalem, a king who loved his people, a king who did not assume to be above God. He did incredibly well for a very little amount of time, but he left a legacy in the history of mankind that'll last for a lifetime. Baldwin IV was the king of the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem.

Great video.
Very interesting to get an alternate view point on the politics that played out between Raymond III's faction and Guy's faction. I'd always heard the more common variant. Particularly it was interesting to here a more favorable view of the Reginald "the wolf" of Kerak. I knew Kingdom of Heaven's rendition was largely bunk, but there were perspectives here I hadn't considered. On a side note, have you ever read Harold Lamb's Iron Men and Saints? if so what is your opinion of the book?

I was really excited to learn kingdom of heaven existed then I've gotten progressively more and more disappointed as I read and hear comments about it. I mean, the commenters were praising Saladin as a man who cared deeply for his men. None of his men would've agreed with this statement after his fighting with Richard the lionheart.
Great video
Thank you very much.

What an amazing story of a courageous young king
Great doc. Renault was may more interesting than I imagined.
I'd love a video about the fall of Constantinople. I know it's not crusades, but it's related in a way. It was what, 140 years after the last crusade the city fell? You could discuss how this was the very thing the crusades hoped to prevent, and the epic siege itself. Maybe discuss how it happened, why the western Christian nations didn't come to aid the city, the way the relationship deteriorated between the two churches and past strife (like the 4th crusade). Your siege of Malta video was so good!

They didn't come because they no longer needed them the Pope was sitting fat up north and much like the Holy Land, they couldn't get people to move to the area. Important note, the Lombard brothers in Venice had financed the Credit for many Crusades out of Venice. The House of Bard became very wealthy financing Wars/Crusades. 100 years later when the King of England refused to payback his loans, the descendants of the Lombards, the Rothschilds moved to London, overthrew the King & became the House of London. When Napoleon lost at Waterloo they took over the World becoming the World Bank(IMF) they schemed with Bankers in America, created the "Federal Reserve" with Rockefeller & Morgan Stanley and have stained the EARTH with Blood. These are Private Banks held by a few truly Powerful men. Ukraine owes them 60.7 billion & counting. They are Debt Farmers, they do not care about money, its Control from the Shadows.

in the face of the rising power of Islam, Christianity itself would soon be in peril...what happened in the holy land was just a preview of things to come
Good work dear
What's kind of insane is that Leprosy isn't nearly the same disease it was then. It's caused by a very slow growing bacteria and can be treated/cured with modern day antibiotics.
I like to imagine him watching our time from the spirit world. He probably wishes he could have received modern treatment for his illness but more importantly would love to have had today's weaponry. I bet he and Saladin are good friends now, along with many others they associated with and are enjoying the show watching us now.

Excellent work! Where are the graphics from, looks a lot like Total War Rome 2...only better textures and quality..
What an incredible man he was and such great achievements even before the age of twenty. Amazing .
Final crusade about to kick off now
I'm from Poland. What would have been the course of history if these wise and brave Baldwin IV had lived long?
The absolute gull for Guy of Lusignan to state he couldn't meet Baldwin due to illness
