Everyone saying the nobility showed their loyalty to Baldwin by refusing to let him abdicate should consider how advantageous it was for the nobility to 1. Have a crippled and bedridden liege and 2. Kick his inevitable succession crisis down the road for however long they could
@isaacpham1311
Жыл бұрын
Yeah that was what I was thinking. Doesn't make for as good a narrative though
@kecukraftwork1988
Жыл бұрын
I agree that procrastinating the crisis was largely their goal. However, there undoubtedly was some loyalty present. No nobility would want to defend the post of a useless royal member, unless said uselessness was a distinct political advantage, either towards themselves or against their enemies. Despite his affliction, Baldwin was far from useless, and so they had no such advantage to leverage. Therefore they kept in there - in greater or lesser part - *because* he was effective in his role, and hence they were loyal to both his cause and his leadership.
@lolihitler4198
Жыл бұрын
@Bimla Singh The nobility had a vast array of rights and privileges but also many obligations and it was the king’s duty to make sure the nobility did not act in a way that violated those rights and obligations. If the king was too sick to rule the nobility effectively had no oversight and could run amok doing as they please. As for the succession crisis with no clear heir Baldwin’s vassals would each have their own favored candidate based on their political goals and if more than one candidate made a bid for the throne civil war was all but guaranteed. Civil war means peasants not working their fields, sacking and looting across the entire kingdom, and a military and economic weakness that could last a generation. A civil war was not only bad for the kingdom it was bad for the nobility themselves as it would be their lands being looted by their rivals and their peasants dying for little gain not to mention the executions and seizing of lands that the losing side would inevitably face. But because there was no way of preventing a succession crisis due to Baldwin’s condition all the nobility could do is bolster their readiness for war and buy as much time as possible to ready themselves. Hope this cleared up what I was getting at

The scene where he ride out to meet Salahdin and muslim army... The scene where that muslim commander says, Jerusalem has come and then the golden cross appears, along with the full Christian army and Baldwin leading them... It is such an incredible goosebumps scene ❤️.
The video is mostly right, but this at 0:35 is a HUGE mistake. Baldwin IV was, indeed, the second and youngest son of King Amalric, but he was not, by any possible means, the younger brother of Baldwin III, since Baldwin III was actually Amalric's older brother (in shorter words, Baldwin III was the paternal uncle of Baldwin IV). Baldwin's older sister was Sibylla, future Queen of Jerusalem after her brother's untimely death in 1185, and her own son's (Baldwin V) in 1186.

It's after the Battle of Montgisard tho he's like 19 to 20 in that movie. I wish they make a movie about him with Edward Norton again
In 1176, Baldwin IV together with Raymond III raided Beka Valley for 2 weeks and defeated saladin's brother at Baalbek who was attempting to stop the raid. In 1177, Baldwin IV defeated, the Ayyubids at the Battle of Montgisard destroying Saladin's Army. In 1179, Saladin return again defeating Baldwin IV at the Battle of Marj Ayun and Siege of Jacob's Ford, but despite of Saladin's success, he did not occupy new territory or conquer Jerusalem. In 1182, Saladin attack again, but Baldwin IV defeated Saladin at the Battle of Belvoir Castle. Saladin hasn't gave up yet, he luanch a Siege of Beirut, but Baldwin IV send a letter to Beirut that he would relief Beirut, but Saladin withdraw, before Baldwin IV arrive. In this same Year, Baldwin IV accompanied by Raymond III would launch Raid at Damascus. In 1183, Baldwin IV together with Raymond III, would launch Raid at Damascene, Raymond III would raid at Bosra and Baldwin IV would raid at Damascus. In this Same Year, Saladin would again return and invade the Oultrejordain(a vassal of the kingdom of jerusalem), he went on a Siege of Kerak, but Baldwin IV heard about the attack and Assemble a relief force accompanied by Raymond III, but he place the command of the Army to Raymond III because he had been blind, but Saladin withdraw when he heard about the relief force. In 1184, Baldwin IV would again send another relief force in another Siege of Kerak(1184), but Saladin would again withdraw, realizing he would not gain the upperhand, when he had heard, that a relief force is coming. His last military action is in 1184, the Siege of Kerak(1184)
