Thanx. Now Dec.2023, I am 76, and have to make this drive solo in 2 weeks for a Christmas visit. You put my mind at ease. Had no idea this much upgrading had occurred. Last time on this was winter 2011. Scenic, yes, but in winter, this has been my least favourite stretch of the Trans Canada. Looks like a breeze now. Happy Trails, cowboy!

I begin running semis across the Kicking Horse in 1978. That was quite a different road then. Thanks for the video.

I drove a transport tractor pulling a 53' trlr through there in the early 2000s I still remember the 45 Km/H curves on the Golden Hill. my wife at thetime always dove into the sleeper for the run down that hill. She was scared to watch as we were going down that hill.

I drove through there in 2003 over the bridge on 10 mile hill because I worked in the oil patch and a company wanted to do a test hole just outside Princeton B.C Testing for coal methane gas.I hauled the mud van out there,I was blown away when I got to the brake check,WOW

I remember when the No. 1 highway at Golden was two lane in the 1960's.

Pulled a 12'6" wide stretched out trombone through banff to golden a few years ago and had to get pilot cars to shut the hwy down to make a few of the corners. this looks much better than it was for sure.

This section of road made many children cry.

Dad would threaten to take us to Golden in the Stratochief with squeaky brakes if we didn’t behave.

I remember living in Golden almost 20 Years ago and they were working on this. Man that was huge project .....

Much nicer drive now for sure but the wicked curves just east of Golden will always be a cool part of history but highly doubt they will be missed.

We used to drive that highway every summer in the 90s....you're right, unrecognizable! In fairness, the natural roadside was actually more scenic back then (for vacationers like us!) but it was a nerve-wracking drive with true "white-knuckle" zones east of Golden and approaching the Kicking Horse bridge. Couldn't have paid me enough to drive a rig through that.

I know what you mean when you're talking about the old Ramblers. I had a 1963 660 and to this day it is still my favorite car. Wish I had never let her go. She was a tank.

Hi from Sydney Australia I started travelling along this road Xmas 2006 to Golden a couple of my kids work at kicking horse resort the first time we used the old road drove under the new bridge which was under construction have been back a few times since last time was in May this year there has certainly a lot of changes made to this stretch of road (my daughter was stolen by a Canadian guy there now married and live further east in the mountains)

My dad took us thru there when it opened in 1962, I think we still had a 1952 Chev pulling the trailer. Pretty scary. LOL. I think it was way back in 2003 for my last car trip to BC. I'm glad I took my 120 lb tour bike thru there in 2018, went to Oregon and back to Edmonton. The wall on the uphill was finished and so they were blasting the mountains at the top. The new eastern part was easy as pie. Only hard part for me was getting up the hill on the soso shoulder. I was mostly alone on the downside where I could do car speed, maybe the sign guys held up traffic for a minute for me. I saw a few other bikes coming eastward, they were SUFFERING going up the old part. LOL. I did the Crowsnest highway on the way back.

So beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Remember family driving that back in the 1960’s. All winding and twisty. Those big rock cuts and 2006? Bridge make an awesome improvement. Was a long switchback time consuming experience before. Mountain engineering is so impressive. Love this video.

i do remember the holiday going through Jasper to BC and coming back the kicking horse pass stopping for lunch and my dad taking out the kitchen box he made for my mom they made tuna sandwiches for us to eat pop was special for us to drink too cold bottle of pop to hide it if it was ononge pop or grape too As my dad got older he did not like to travel his health was not good he said and he could not afford it i asked him if it was now time to take and pay for it he passed away my mom wanted me to stay home with her now got use to retirement life too turn 60 myself if my mom's health is better to would travel to BC to visit my cousin she can not

Been a while since I last drove this section since I started taking the Crowsnest from Hope to Medicine Hat AB whenIdo my annual drive from Abbotsford to Winnipeg. Just east of Golden made me cringe...nice to see an update about the upgrades and thank you.

Totally agree. Now, it's reminding me of mountain superhighways I drove years ago in the Alps of Europe; and an incredible stretch of U.S. Interstate West of Denver. Never thought I'd live to see 4 lanes, or that it was even possible in this rugged, high terrain.

Such a huge change since I was trucking through this highway from 1985 to about 2000

Traveled through this area in 2007 when the huge bridge was being built and the old highway below was still open. We were at the front of the line waiting for the flagman. He noticed our Ontario plates and came over and told my children all about the project. Very cool to see the end result all these years later.

Thanks cant wait to personally travel this new route. I've traveled this route from the late 70s to the 00s almost every long weekend and for Christmas every year Calgary to Vancouver. Best vehicle to use is 1997 F150 XLT 4x4 reg. cab long box, Goodyear Wrangler ATS tires.

Drove this back in the "80's with Motorways out of Calgary. Run "teams" to Vancouver, then, later, singles to Rogers Pass. Yes, you are right;....it's unrecognizable. I remember a car load of Japanese tourists lost control of the vehicle on, what we once called. 7 mile bridge, just East of the 6 mile hill brake check. They were blocking traffic. A bunch of us got out to push the car off the bridge. The driver applied brakes. We tried again. He applied the brakes. So, we pick the car up one bumper at a time and moved it to the shoulder. Fun times.

That Kicking Horse highway was at times in the 70's, during the winter months treacherous and icy, narrow, almost nowhere to pass and winding almost switchback type of road, it was slow with Bighorn on the highway at times. I have stayed away from this highway in the last 10 years during the most recent phase. I would always take Route 3 or 16. 16 is a lot less traffic especially in the winter and there simply are not that many big climbs on the Yellowhead Highway 16. Great video, thanks so much for sharing with us.

4 lane Hyw From Golden to at least the Ontario border!

I remember why I used to avoid taking this highway when I went to Kelowna to visit my family. I was on a single-lane section with tons of curves so passing was restricted, and I got stuck behind an 18-wheeler slowly climbing a hill. A pickup truck came racing up behind me and sat an inch (almost literally, I'm not joking) behind my bumper, blaring his horn at me to try to force me and the 18-wheeler out of his way. I guess he wanted either me to pass on blind curves with cliffs on the side, or the 18-wheeler to speed up. It was insane, and a type of incident that was far too common. So I am glad that the crazies now have passing lanes. Now if someone can tell me why so many pickup drivers are complete asses and drive like maniacs, I'd appreciate it. I have a powerful Mustang convertible and am a military-trained driver so I'm not exactly the type to block lanes, and yet I commonly see pickups driving wildly like they are in some panic and can get them riding my tail even though I usually drive quite a bit above the speed limit. You'd think I'd be the last person to get tailgated and yet it happens all the time with pickup trucks. Weird.

Thank you for doing this video. I ran this highway from Calgary to the Okanagan Valley 4 to 5 times a week pulling intermodal cans for CP. What a complete transformation! With a heavy snowfall and those old steep grades you were in for a long night.

Wow, what a nice series of upgrades!! I can remember during our annual summer trips during the 1980s from Calgary to the Okanagan along the #1 how, once you were west past Banff, it was single-lane each way and all the way to the Okanagan (and beyond). Often you were crawling for miles behind slow vehicles! My dad used to particularly dread that stretch just east of Golden. It's nice to see that fixed, plus every new mile of twinned highway through B.C. is a definite bonus!

I can remember one of the passes when I was a kid that was just a single lane . They had traffic lights so cars could only go one direction at a time Cannot recall if it was kicking horse

Thanks for putting this up. I am planning a trip into Salmon Arm and wanted to see what the status of the highway was. I haven't driven through this since 2018. All looking much better now going into Golden from the YOHO side. Thanks again.

thanks for that relaxing video ! nice commentary. the mellow cruise in the semi makes me want to go get my class 1 with air again. (might have to rob a bank to afford it). things would be rather different with a stormy winter drive, chains and tourists, but that road sure has been massively improved since I first saw it in 1980.

It kind of reminds me of Parc des Laurentide in Québec. That's a 2 hour drive through total wilderness and rugged mountains. It was fully rebuild as a 4 lane highway more than a decade ago. The big difference is that there's enough space between the two directions that they don't need a jersey barrier in the middle for most of the drive. At one point, both directions go on either side of a lake.

Cumulative changes are huge. I first drove this in the 1960's. it was a winding two lane road clinging to massive vertical cliffs. It was scary. I thought no way could this ever become a 4-lane divided route. Well seems you just have to pony up the $$$. This is all steep uphill. The camera makes it look flatter.

Interesting to see the left turns with a 100 km/h speed limit you certainly wouldn’t see that in Ontario!

Thanks for the drive. Looks like they are really trying to get phase 4 done yet this year. They might if the snow holds off.

I just could not figure out why in the world it has taken so long to get this done - as the major link to east and west for goods. This should have been done 40 years ago - drove long haul through there many times and always frustrate me that it was so mickey mouse of a road. Back in around 2006 we had to take the 3 valley gorge way and sure enough a big ole rock fall happens as we get there, big old boulder came down on a east bound truck crushing the cab and part of the trailer - my partner and I were able to rip open the both doors and pull the drive out. Thank goodness there was a nurse in the traffic and attended to him, He had a horse shoe that day as he ended up only have a crack rib. Next up are the idiots of Ontario - Same thing the major link for transportation of goods #11 and 17 especially 11 from Cochrane to border - that road needs to be 4 lanes all the way with a bunch of roomie pull offs - it would cut down the time so much. I did drive it last year and saw they had a tiny improvement from Manitoba border down to Nippigon, especially the Thunder Bay portion - I took 17 after Nip, still think its not great, It sure would be nice to see a major by pass of all those small towns from the Sault to Sudbury

I’m trying to figure that out right now. After spring there is only going to be one major project on hwy 1 at Tappen BC. I’m thinking about doing some scenic drive videos and then there’s alway my shorts. I would never of thought these construction videos would be so popular.

Have been doing the drive from Calgary to Golden since the early 90s to family property. Used to take 2:45hr on a good day. After all of these changes. Now takes 2:15hr. Once people catch on to it being close to the same as going to Fernie. Prices for vacation property are going to jump more than they already have.

Love watching these videos. Is there anything new going on between Golden/Rev/Sicamous (except the quartz creek bridge) could you do a video. I seem to remember seeing a bunch of clearing going along the highway a few years ago. I have not driven that way since 2019 as I have been taking Yellowhead.

Nothing going on there except bridge replacement at Albert Canyon Chain up.

I'm a welder I was the head splicing welder for the construction of that bridge it was built in Armstrong BC,it was the last bridge I worked on before leaving this company after 8years ,it's pretty cool driving over the bridges I've welded,the beams for this bridge are 10ft tall massive peices of steel structure

That’s cool knowing you have been part of such massive projects. I delivered rebar to the Kicking Horse Phase 4 viaducts on several occasions. I also delivered rebar to the Bottle Top and Jessica Bridges on the Coquihalla during the bridge rebuilding there. It is really cool to know that you are part of the final structure and always will be.

had an uncle work for CPR he had black and white pictures of him going with the Stream locomotive through the pass he retired when they took the stream away from him he had t ne 40 boxes of the pass i did have them all stored safely in my home too it was not written down they picture were lift to me to keep he knew i would take good care of them lol now first time my 10 fingers were very sticky it would have been a back robber that stick finger would have been my name he said lol i drive a truck for Wail to the pass in the winter could mean driving through too think it saves up their storms when i was driving through it lol but very beautiful country through the pass in i was gone down the river just to take pictures and fine someone will to help me with picture work for CP if it was CN would just taken a ride on justin trudeau taxi hoped on for a ride CP was too far for me to walk to lol have a train layout i model the kicking horse pass too and the cn throw Jasper too

Too bad they had to take the scenery away along with the twisting two lane. This new four lane will definitely cut down on the number of vehicles ending up in the Kicking Horse river.

So the Coachella is actually between Merritt and Hope, from Merritt to Kamloops it's just highway 5. But to be honest, everyone that's not local makes that mistake. Pretty cool to see Kicking Horse almost done.

@thebigh2014 the Coq is between the split of Hwy 1 and Hwy 5 at Kamloops and ends at the split of Hwy 3 and Hwy 5 near Hope with the section between the 2 overpasses in Merrit being shared with Hwy 5A

When are the 4 lanes expected to open west of Golden? Is it open now, looks close?

Modernization is great, but back in the 70's it sure felt you were in the wilds of Canada when you passed through there.

So does this mean that HWY1 is 4-line divided all the way from Banff to Vancouver now??

No, this is just one more small section of upgrade completed. This upgrade fixes the worst section of road on the Trans Canada Highway in Western Canada though. There is still lots of two lane highway on the Trans Canada in BC, but every little bit helps.

Much safer without all the congestion of all the traffic. The views & the scenery have radically changed. Used to go to the Rockies a lot as a kid & would recognize where I was from a picture, now I have no clue where I am.

The animal over passes are such an embarrassment, compared to the ones in Alberta, horrible.

going to miss all the the paint on the walls and jersey barriers on the 20 km corners. Once all 4 lanes are complete are they going to allow b-trains and double 53s?

B-Trains go thru there now. I don’t know about LCV laws in BC except that they can run the Coq. On the prairies they can only run 4 lane hwys.

Couple two or three things. A) I hope it lasts given salt and spraying for winter driving can shorten infrastructure lifespan. B) Hwy 5 would've been 1/50 the cost and technical challenge. It seems they choose the most difficult ridiculously expensive route. From Golden to Kelowna/ kamloops, the province has no money or plans . Lipstick on a pig trillion dollars 💸 and counting 👏 hwy 5! Should've been the one considering it spans from the pacific ocean to north of valemount at the national park. This is the most expensive 200 kms Canada could ever take on. Some of the newer hwy upgrades are falling apart within 5 years. It will be interesting to see if this lasts. The bridges and road chemicals don't last.

How is it that BC can build a hi way through the mountains in a fraction of the time and cost that Alberta can build a straight flat hi way to Ft. Mac? 10 years on now

I think it's the opposite... It takes us 10 years to build a single failing interchange and it takes Calgary 10 years to build a ring road.

@@centinelroads the Coqahalla was built in late 70's or early 80's, hi way 63 to ft Mac or the long view hi way I was referring to. Longview I remember took for ever it was always an election tool for the cons back then and 63 I dont think is even finished

As far as I know there are no plans at this time. Yoho is a federal park so the Canadian government is involved and right now there is no funding
