To all the people who say "belts don't mean crap". I see Chimaev being humble enough to receive his blue belt and being genuinely happy about it. I see Tyron Woodley or Tony Ferguson actually crying after receiving their black belts. These people are elite level MMA athletes, not some average KZread commentators who supposedly sUBmiT eveRYoNE wiTH anY BElt. It tells me, those belts mean a lot to those who are actually good at what they do. I'd trust them more.

I don't think the belt matters but it does represent that your peers recognize the work you have put in. In that sense it does have some meaning but not directly related to your skill.

@@DanielTateNZ It really depends. Most of the decent school looks at it as a recognition to your skill. You can spend 20 years put a lot of work, but if you stay at the same level and your skills suck, you won't receive anything. @@AbsoluteADCC Thanks Yeah I understand the concept of proficiency related to rank but there is an obvious problem that when you get older you can no longer perform in the same way so what do you do then? Do you take a black belt from someone or do you keep it to represent a milestone in your journey? I think it's more complicated than skill = rank.

@@DanielTateNZ Totally get your point man. That's why if you look at BJJ tournaments, they are broken down by age groups and belt levels. 40 years old black belt will be competing against 40 years black belts, not young and brutal 25 years old guys =) But at the same time, that 40-50 year old black belt (if he is a legit one, not McDojo) will still handle most of the lower belts even the younger one. And again, there's an obvious difference between a practitioner who is professional athlete and does it for living, and just the guy who comes to the gym 3 times a week for 2 hours. I think you will see that everywhere where there is some sort of ranking system that stays with the person forever as he/she achieves it. It's like you can take both guys with CPA license who graduated with the same grades from the same school and obtained the license with the same passing score from the same board. But if one works full-time at a prestigious global accounting firm and another one works part-time at some 3 people firm, they will be on a different level. Even thought they both have the same designation/rank in a profession.

People get anxious about belts but 1) the basics are always the most important. The more time you spend practising them the better 2) You are exactly the same fighter you were before you got the new belt. The belt doesn't make you a better fighter.

Quick question for anyone with some knowledge about this: If someone is top level in another wrestling form and just started training jiu jitsu. They would obviously progress a lot faster at jiu jitsu than someone without a wrestling background. Are there rules for how fast they can progress in belt status, or is it only up to their skill level to decide? And for someone like Khamzat who is a top level freestyle wrestler, is he actually on the level of a blue belt when following strict jiu jitsu rules, or would he be able to beat legit brown, purple or black belts in strict jiu jitsu rules?

Depends on the school more than anything my gym doesn't give out belts for no gi but does for Gi. Some places have techniques that need to be mastered before climbing belts others its just about your ability to perform and finish. Too many variables depends on teachers and gym.

im brazilian and there is almost no wrestlers here, but if a guy is a black or brown belt in JUDO he starts jiu jitsu as a blue belt in most dojos... the thing is, a great part of jiu jitsu is about the guard game, fighting with your back on the groundm you know? As a white belt you learn the arm lock, triangle and other submissions from the guard and wrestlers really dont know much about it since in wrestling if you are on your back you are losing, so i believe even if they are great wrestlers they should start from a white belt level, they sure gonna be great at takedowns and top control but they normally are like turtles on their back...
