This was actually true in WCW in the 90's as well. Which had it's downsides of letting people with absolutely 0% mic skills talk too long. (Chris Benoit, Buddy Lee Parker, Jerry Flynn, etc.)

@@michellelincoln9987 It was clearly a terrible angle, but I'm not sure it was intended to fail and humiliate Patera, as it obviously did. I read that they simply had too many heels at that moment, and figured they'd turn Patera heel again when the time came. Which it never did because he so spectacularly blew his last chance.

Love it when Mean Gene had to turn away at 1:42 mark to hide his smile in attempting to contain the laughter. God, I miss him. He was the best. Mean Gene was a huge part of my childhood, and I loved him when I was a kid. There will never and could never be another Mean Gene Okerlund.

Most memorable moments of Mean Gene for me were when the Gobbledy Gooker had him in the ring and Gene tripped over the bottom rope and slammed onto the mat. Telling Hogan and the Outsiders he had a team of lawyers if they touch him was another.

Sure, Patera was tripping over himself here, but it still felt 10 times more genuine than anything on RAW because yeah, he was making it up on the fly. That was the whole point, the biggest stars were the biggest stars because they could do that. Hulk & Warrior were huge draws partly because their promos were entertaining. Macho and Flair are Top 5 all time because they could work AND talk better than anyone. Vince and his damned scripts sucked the fun out of everything.
