Kayak Camping Texas - 2 Days at Peak Conditions
Спорт
This is the clearest river I've ever paddled! High flow rates were epic.
Fall rains made springs burst into life all around the Texas Hill Country, creating perfect conditions for a stunning kayak camping adventure. Crystal clear water in the Texas Hill Country is a magical thing.

Chad Freeman thanks for watching and the kind words! Means a lot my man. Ya know, I suppose the subs will come in time but you’re right, I don’t upload as often as I should. Any ideas for videos other than the kayak camping edits? They take awhile to put together (hence the time between uploads). I’m working on a big edit covering another Texas river right now. Should be done in April. Thanks again for the comment!

Gatewood Brown, great question....Kerrville paddler here...love you reppin’ the Hill Country! Was out paddling the Medina river today with the minions....what if you did longer trips and created a series of videos you could release one week at a time? One trip could give you weeks of content. That would get people coming back week after week for more greatness!

This is unbelievable. My friend Dustin and his wife took me kayaking in the Newport Harbor in SoCal and I INSTANTLY fell in love with kayaking. Bought my first kayak a couple months ago. A Pelican Rustler. It's nice to see a Pelican can handle something like this. I can't wait to do something like this in nature and not so much in the city. Texas needs to have build a lot of reservoirs along these rivers when droughts come. All this wasted water to the gulf.
@GatewoodBrown
2 жыл бұрын
That would be catastrophic to these rivers. Dams are one of the worst things for a river and the flow, characteristics and uses change forever. If anything, dams need to be removed so rivers can return to their natural course! The gulf needs freshwater to keep its fish populations thriving. Without it you’ll see a lot of negative impacts.

When i was around 13 y/o (early 90s) i went to a summer camp in Bandera. We floated down the medina. I remember the water being very cold and clear as tapwater. I don't remember going down any extreme rapids, just a slow peaceful drift. I loved it.

Liberty Hodges you’re spot on that the devils will be a great trip when it comes together. The Pecos is actually higher on my list than the devils due to its ease of access and significantly less restriction (camping/fires/etc). If you guys keep watching and providing feedback we will keep making them! I appreciate the support

5 жыл бұрын
@@GatewoodBrown Hi there! Thanks for responding. I think the Pecos will be an experience you'll never forget. I thought it was a life changing (and extremely physically challenging) journey. I did it when I was relatively new to kayaking. I would love to go back with a few more skills under my belt one of these days. LOL! The Comal is a super short river...just a few miles long, but it is a beautiful, spring fed tributary to the Guadalupe River. In the fall and spring, after it rains, it can be quite a bit of fun. It has a couple really fun rapids and chutes and, while you may not have time to camp while on this short section of river, it feeds the Guadalupe and you can jump on the Guadalupe river and there are ample places to camp on that river...albeit not quite as crystal clear as the Comal and a bit more crowded (downer there). Might be worth it after you've done some of your other trips higher up on the list...or if you only have a day for a short trip or your trying to pack as many river trips into a small amount of time as possible. Last year, I did a little over 40 miles on the San Marcos River from San Marcos to Luling. My goal is to do at least 100 miles this year. I think it's going to be brilliant. I had planned to go back in early November for the longer trip, but all the rains made the situation on the river a little too gnarly for my taste so I scrapped that trip for when the river has less flood debris in it. The San Marcos, if you haven't already paddled it, starts out crystal clear and pristine from it's spring-fed source. There are usually a lot of people on the river in town, but after you head out of town (and especially after you get past Martindale), you don't see many people at all on the river after that. The San Marcos is surrounded by mostly private land, which makes camping kind of a pain sometimes as I'm sure you've experienced before, but there are islands here and there and you can stay at the campgrounds in Martindale (Spencer's) as well. My suggestion is to Google Earth the river and find your spots where there are islands so you can kind of know how far you'll need to go to find a place to camp (which I'm sure you already do for all your trips). Again, thanks for the awesome content, the attentiveness to beautiful lighting and the desire to inspire those of us who sit behind desks most days to get off our hind ends and get out and experience what Texas kayak life is all about.

Stumbled across this video- looks like it was an amazing trip! I was reading through the comments and noticed you mentioned interest in a Pecos River trip. I freaking LOVE the Pecos. I was a river guide for a wilderness program that runs trips out there for a few summers, and I’ve been wanting to get a group together to go out there sometime in the not too distant future. It’s legitimately my favorite place in the world and I’ve put maybe 360ish miles in on that river to date. Let me know if you’re interested in a trip or even just some more info on the river. I’ve got an old guidebook and everything!

Needless to say I can’t wait to do a trip out there someday. Fingers crossed for heavy rains this fall. The rivers are all running a little low right now. Very cool that you were a river guide, didnt know they had those on the Pecos. What sort of boat would you all typically paddle in?

We used inflatable kayaks (aire strike tributaries) and they were perfect for our wilderness program- very forgiving on the whitewater and in the shallow sections for our many beginner participants. I know lots of people run it in canoes though, including Baylor University’s wilderness program (which I also worked for) when they make the rare trip out there. I have never run it in a canoe, but it looks fun. I have grown quite fond of those inflatable kayaks
@GatewoodBrown

Jessica Cox very interesting! The inflatable kayaks must be super durable. We recently did a pack rafting trip in North Carolina and I was super impressed by the durability of our inflatable boats. Caleb Neyland hey Caleb, is around the Bandera area. I suggest using google maps and google street view to palm out an appropriate route. Mileage, flow, experience, and group member all affect how long you should plan the paddle. Hope this helped!

We are definitely fortunate to have friends open to these activities. It’s tough scheduling though!

For sure, i try to bring out some of my friends but not too willing. I've recently started kayaking and I'm in love. I would like to take on more adventures and just learn but not on my own. Its good to have people that have your back.

I'm down! i live in Texas. I was born outside the city and most of my friends that are still alive are from the city and just don't get it. I bet if I told them they would gain more social media attention they'd be there real quick. I love nature so much wish I could've been a Texas game warden.

Bro, me too ✋
Great videos. Would you start sharing your put in/take out points, please?

It’s hard to do that since flow rates really change the characteristics of a river. It’s best to talk with local outfitters and guides before your trip. They’ll be able to steer you towards the best section to paddle.
You guys should do the Chatooga on the border of GA/SC, strongest rapidwater east of the Sip

I'm glad I found your videos. How do you decide to put in and take out at. When you choose a river?

Alicia Martin thanks for watching them! They’re a blast to plan and make. Well I try to choose a reasonable mileage number first, usually about 8 miles between two days. Then I map out the section of river that would be conducive to paddling in google earth and keep track of the mileage between crossings. I mark the major crossings as well as good locations to park and camp at. Google street view is helpful when scouting places to park! Then I see which consecutive sections get me as close to my ideal mileage as possible. Lastly, check flow rates on the river and decide if there’s enough water to have fun. Once all your rivers are mapped you can choose where to go and paddle. A lot of up front leg work but it’s totally worth it!
Would you do a gear list/load out video some time? Also, have you ever thought about doing a Trinity river video?
@GatewoodBrown

Caleb Humphreys I definitely could! Been working to hone in essential gear for a few years now, I tend to travel pretty light. Honestly, the trinity is pretty dirty down by Houston. There’s an amazing spring fed creek north of Beaumont that we go to every year. I much prefer that paddle to the trinity. They’re in the same general area

Seth Aillet thanks for watching! There’s a really cool river/creek north of Beaumont. It’s called Village Creek and is pretty popular. Great water quality and sandy bottom make it a fun one to paddle/swim/camp out

Hey Gatewood, I have been watching your videos for the past few years. I have gotten my friends into kayak camping and it has been great! We live in Illinois but are wanting to travel to Texas for a trip this summer. Which river would you recommend?
