Kayak Camping Texas - 2 Days Freezing (Llano River)

Спорт

The water was insane! The Llano River in the Texas Hill Country is perfect for Kayak Camping. It's the spot we venture out to nearly every single time we go on a trip. The rivers gush from springs and remain crystal clear. This landscape was perfect for a spur of the moment winter camping trip. Weather got down into the 20s which was a first for us!

Check out the guadalupe river in New Braunfels, start under the bridge on I35 public boat ramp and go upstream and downstream. The water is reasonably clear because it's a mix of the crystal clear comal river and the guadalupe which is greenish but low flow.

The last wild river in Texas. There are no dams on the river for flood control. Three years ago the river flood crested at 39’ above flood stage. The river converges with the Colorado River at Kingsland Texas, down river from the city of Llano where it took out one of the brides at Kingsland. There are some amazing video of the flood waters in it’s might rolling the bridge like a toy. I grew up on this river and it calls me back often.

@@GatewoodBrown Yes, Llano is my home town. The city park dam and the city dam are not flood control believe me. I live there since 1958. The river will rage. It is a sight to see. The North Llano and South Llano Rivers converge in Junction, Texas then flows 75 miles before joining the Colorado River in Kingsland, where it form the semi constant- level lake, Lake LBJ. Above is Inks Lake and Lake Buchanan. Below is Lake Marble Falls and Finally Lake Travis and Lake Austin. This is what is known as the Highland Lakes. Unfortunately the watershed for the main supply is the Colorado and it is very narrow although extends up into the Panhandle or Texas, it is either feast or famine with drought conditions common. The water supply for the city of Llano is threatened by sand sediment and the areas above the city park “dam” and the city dam, which are really both weirs, are being excavated and cleaned. The amount of granite base sand is mind boggling. The last flood occurred three years ago, was only one foot shy of the record and peaked at 39 feet. Spring is a good time to enjoy the river up until mid July when the flow drops to where you may paddle 25% of the way and drag the kayak the rest. The effort can be brutal, I know, been there done that and the T-shirt was destroyed. I grew up on that river. Me and my dog and a BB gun. No better place for a child to be introduced to nature. Please be kind to our river, we love her she is unique. There is hopes she will never be damed in a major way, the rare Guadeloupe Bass species will help. It is a semi wide mouth bass with a beautiful checkered stripe which the Llano River is the only home.

@@GatewoodBrown obviously there is a ton of different things you could buy, but I personally would consider those to be essentials in the cold. In the winter 6" isn't a ton, but middle of March it was unexpected. The forecast was mid 30s with flurries. There was a dusting on the ground when we went to bad. Woke up and surprise!! Trail was covered and snow was stuck to all the trees so you couldn't even see the trail blazes. It made the very rocky terrain more comfortable to walk on when you weren't sliding off the rocks. Great video. Was trying to figure if you were in the H10 or H12 yak. Was wondering how it did with the head on rock adventure. I’m new to yak camping but have camped in N Arkansas in some cold weather. My advice, buy a good bag, one that’s rated down to zero degrees and if you are to cold to sleep, get up n stoke the fire to warm up. Then return for another couple hours of sleep. You won’t sleep if your to cold. I once camped on a river in Mississippi out of a canoe n a gallon of water was like slush in the morning, but I stayed comfy in an Alpine bag rated for -20 degrees. Look forward to viewing more of your videos.

From the very beginning you guys had me laughing. Yeti dry bag and sun doplhin kayaks. I love winter yak packing and I use my back packing gear. Its light weight and performs great. I actualy sleep good in colder temps. The first time I ever went kayaking was in Dec in Missouri. It was in the twenties and snowing. I flipped my kayak over by accident and had to swim to shore with my kayak in tow. About half way to shore my core temp was dropping fast so I let go of the kayak and swam the last bit. I was wearing blue jeans tea shirt, canvas coat and tennis shoes. When I got back to shore I started my car to warm it up and ran around it several times. I then removed all my close accept my underwear and swam back out and retrieved my kayak. I was alone also. I did everything wrong that first paddle but learned alot of valuble lessons. This was over 25 years ago. I still kayak to this day and so do my kids. Ive never flipped another kayak unintentionaly and I now know the importance of having the right gear. I am not critisizing you guys at all just telling about my first experience. Im glad Im still hear to tell people about it. I built that first kayak and taught myself how to kayak from a book. I didnt take much stok in the chapter on cold weather paddling gear. Ive never made that mistake again. I still live in the Ozarks of Mo. and paddle our streams and lakes. I have also paddled oceans and in several states. Sorry for rambling so long. Love this video it brought back alot of memories. Keep it up guys. Looks like I need to do some paddling in Tx.

From what I’ve seen Missouri has some beautiful rivers too. I’d like to shoot up that way someday. Wyoming would be an incredible place to float! Very cool to hear you’ve spent time up there exploring
