As a Whitney fan, I think she did an awesome job! Her gorgeous tone is enough to do justice to this song. Kat is totally underrated.

Despite these miserable judges, Katherine went on to be a great star. You go girl! You rock!

Katharine McPhee Is incredible!! Not only for singing such a great rendition but being able to stand there with a smile and not blow her lid when the judges completely and utterly misjudged her. I remember this season very well and the judges didn't give her a fair ride most of the competition. I'm just glad she's done well for herself post-idol.

The Lady Can Sing. We all know it. She's not Witney Houston.. (Lov Witney .. She's Catherine McAfee...and that more than enough. The judges really attacked here here. In thinking about it I think that they were trying to keep here humble? Like maybe they know something.. She has a beautiful voice..

the judges were wrong- plain and simple. She is magnificent.

Her and her fathers connection was one of the most emotional things to watch on Idol, ugh tears every time!

And then she marries the writer and producer... Good for you girl!

Her Mom and Dad look so very proud, not surprisingly. Katharine McPhee is about to be, hands down, the next America's Sweetheart. She's been that for millions of us for several years. Love you, Kat!

My gosh, they raked her over the coals. I mean, they acted like she was horrible and she was nothing but awesome. Great performance by a beautiful young woman who took their biased “opinions” with grace and class. Who’s got the last laugh now in 2019?!!!!

This is my favorite performance of this song! Seriously! I actually loved it!

Glad she followed her heart and showed the world what great talent she has. Amazing voice!!!

I think she was absolutely phenomenal!!!

Just seeing the tears in her fathers eyes during that performance and then hearing Simons cruel critique got to me. If he regreted it, I can respect that.

This girl (now a woman) sings so well and she’s so much talented (as a singer and as a front-woman) that It’s not surprise that a Master (I would say a king) of pop music like David Foster fell in love with and married her. She’s not only gorgeous: she’s a very good artist.

C'me on, she did it amazing!!!!

She's married to David Foster now. I think she got over it and won in many other ways.

She was absolutely amazing and the performance was completely out of this world good! She really deserved the apologies from the judges the next night.

It's amazing they are critical with one of the best singers in decades. She is a star in 2018.

Man, that gave me chills! Absolutely effortless... What I love the most, is that even though it is a 100% W.Houston song, she did it her way :-)

This is back when American Idol was worth watching. The judges were brutal and honest. Gave praise when it was due, but let the singers know when they gave crappy performances. Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and the other guy are not genuine and very honest to the contestants as they should be.

Both Randy and Simon are over the top here. Yes they idolizes Whitney and to them and many it is sanctimonious for others to sing what she recorded. But I gather the composer of the song would take issue with that from a business stance and you can't prevent others from singing a particular song. No one holds exclusive rights over singing a song.

I get the chills every time I hear her sing this sing!!!!

Obviously the judges are right (especially Simon) which is why she is now on a hit TV show!! I've always suspected that IDOL doesn't really select the most talented contestants and that the feedback given is to create dramatic tension. I mean, come on, Katherine was amazing!!

Welp, she took it in pride at least. But I have to say, were those judges expecting her to carry it JUST like Whitney?? OR make it her own??? That’s what I stand by and that’s exactly what she did....made it her own and she KILLED IT! Yes, it was pitchy in some spots but you know, nerves also plays a roll in that as well. I’m a vocal coach as well as a performer and the girl hands down did good. Taylor Hicks....hmmmm....where is he even today? 🤦‍♀️

Love your deep, rich tone...Oh so nice. I'll never forget seeing you perform this great song years ago... loved it then, and still today. And I think the judges were a bit hard on you. But that's show business for you; you have to be able to take the rejections and get back up and keep going forward, and I hope you've kept-up with your singing. Your an amazing young lady and have lots of talent to share with many.

Wow. That was way better in my memory. I really don't remember it being that bad. Doesn't matter now because now she's amazing, but man she came a long way.

Clive Davis invited Katharine to the Charity of Hope Fund Raising in 2008. Katharine sang The Bodyguard medley and the late Whitney Houston gave her the standing ovation and praised she has awesome vocals.

Still enjoy watching Kat after all these years…

Paula was actually absolutely on point. My favorite Katharine songs are always the beautiful quieter ones, just listen to "Run" on Smash, and I don't even watch Smash. The others were way harsh.
