I like how the older series of A.I. you can truly see when the judges are blown away by someone with an incredible voice. None of this over the top reaction and jumping out of seats. Just a stunned silence. How nice 🙂

It is a natural gift, even if her mom did that. You can’t teach someone to have a great voice. You can improve, strengthen and refine, but you either have it or not. Still great story.

Yeah, she may have raw talent but having vocal coaching pretty much your whole life is 100% a leg up on the competition. Let's not pretend this is a random kid who just sings in the shower and wound up making it in show biz.

Thank you! I was thinking just that. And there is nothing wrong with having received excellent training. Actually it's the safer, more sustainable and more likely way than this myth of "natural talent" that brings forth perfection. It might. But it's VERY unlikely and far from superior to actually knowing what you're doing.

Kelly Clarkson will always be THE American Idol, but Katharine has my heart. She changed my whole perspective on music by introducing me to jazz and blues. She’s an old soul. One of a kind.

She's not just a great singer. She is a sweetheart and pretty as well.

It's not like you're ugly. Anyway people are supposed to be unique. It's just that we live in a culture right now that puts great value on these "gifts". However, I'd rather be an ugly great philosophical thinker or some saint that noone knows about than some known formula of beauty that is common throughout history. Food for thought: It's not always the person who's appreciated at his time that makes a difference. For example, van Gogh died thinking he was a talentless piece of shit loser that never amounted for anything. I bet he thought he'd rather be some random handsome man who got all the ladies too. Live your life by the mantra to do great work that makes a difference to you.

But....in the finals, she came up against "Goober" and after all, how can anyone have a chance, against Goober? Seriously now, this woman 2nd, 1st place, Goober, weirdest thing I ever saw.

wow, it's a lovely thing to see how much a parent believes in her child's talent and individuality. good on mom.

What a sweetheart. I remember looking forward to seeing her every week. This was when Idol was a great show.

IS she still a sweetheart? I remember reading an ugly story where she crashed a wedding at a resort she was staying at and then made fun of the bride with her celebrity friend . Also seems to be a social climber..

This is one of my favorite American idol auditions ever.

"I'll be worried in the top two" She did make it to the top two! What a prediction! :)

Back when America idol actually had judges that actually judged and knew what real talent was.

She was so young, the childish roundness of her face is charming. Humble, cute and very sweet. She's my favorite AI contestant. Pure talent.

This was one of my favorite auditions. I remember recording it and playing over & over. Wish she was bigger than she is. True talent.

She is BEAUTIFUL looks alot like VICTORIA PRINCIPLE...Also very nice PERSONALITY.... OH by the way DAVID FOSTER is VERY HANDSOME....Love the way he dresses up....

That vibrato though... So subtle but so stunning.

Still watching this on 2019, always loved her personality n talent! Hollywood where is she?? Bring her back

She was Playing Jenna in Waitress on the West End in London at the beginning of the year

She's hands down my all time favorite contestant. I love her mom with her top 2 comment. When your kid has this much talent you know it and you're not afraid to tell anyone either.

How did she not win? That's a voice from the gods!

Having only learned about Kat through Smash, this is the first time I've seen her in her younger years. This video makes me tear up with her! I'm so amazed at her talent and her beautiful charisma!

Grandmother I’m a singer. We love singing together and she’s singing LITERALLY all the time! Doing vocal warm ups without realizing it. It’s adorable. This is really inspiring I’m going to show her this clip :)

LOVE HER. So funny and silly. It's obvious she doesn't take herself to seriously. Her voice gave me chills when I watched it the first time. I had never heard someone sing so purely, yet powerfully and soulfully. I still get goosebumps. You go Kat! Loved the first album, and I'll be buying her new album on January 5th.

And WOW! Did she ever blossom! She was my favorite of that season!

I saw her at the Waitress musical show less than 2 months ago in london and she was AMAZING

After this show a year or two, she surprised my church with a walk in guest appearance. She said she wasn’t doing well and needed to get back in touch. She was so Hubble, the church was in Plymouth Mi. After that she showed up on her TV Series, back in touch.

And to think, she’s married to a 16 Grammy winner now and one of the greatest producers in the world. Literal angel in the music world. Her voice is just uh.

Monica Marie - Yep, her mother even chose her audition song. She didn’t say that, but it’s pretty clear when she read the note. The judges even realize she’s a total stage mom and Katharine doesn’t deny it! Lol She’s very talented, though. :)
