I agree with the judges. The song was bigger than her. Sometimes it’s about song choice and whatever fits your vocal style. But she has her own niche. I love when she sings jazzy and bluesy songs. She was still classy singing this song.

Hilarious how many people in the comments defending Katharine and acting like she sang it so good and was SO AMAZING. Randy and Simon KNOW good singing, especially Randy. A vocal expert would say the same thing "there were pitch problems" her voice did sound strained as she desperately tried to hit those high belting notes and the runs. She's not a bad singer, but she didn't sing this song well from a technical aspect. It was just okay.

i agree with the judges. i think katherine had an off vocal day. it sounded like she was on the verge of cracking every time she was belting. She was definitely pitchy.

She did a nice job with that song. It’s difficult no disputing that, but I feel some of the contestants want to rush things. There are certain artists you should not attempt until a certain point in your career. You have to be unmistakably on a whole different level to come out at this point of the competition and sing that song. Take Carrie Underwood for instance, she’s exceptional when it comes to vocals and she worked up to more difficult songs like taking on Ann and Nancy Wilson’s Alone. She has the vocal ability to back it up! The judges’ beef with Carrie was she could sing any song and do it well, but she always picked songs that were boring and let’s face it beneath her. Every song Carrie sang was outstanding. With that being said Katherine’s selection at this point in time was a bad move. Do I think she could nail the song today? Absolutely she has grown into her voice. I have to agree with the judges on this one. Simon a bit harsh but he was spot on. After having heard Whitney sing the song that’s the only way you want to hear it.

I simply admire her talent for singing, performing, dancing... but this time I agree with the judges, even though there was no need to be so rude with her, specially Simon. She sang very well, just not as good as it has to be for THIS song... Too many singers have tried. It seems it's the Graduation Song for a female voice, and it doesn't have to be that. She was a bit rush, felt uncomfortable and agreed with Paula Abdul, when she says that her voice brights more in tender notes, soft and not on these kind of hard stuff. Beautiful and sexy, perhaps too much for this iconic song.
