KastKing Rover Baitcasting Reel Review

Catfishing is by far my favorite outdoor activity. I love the time spent outdoors, and I absolutely LOVE battling big catfish on rod and reel. I'll hike anywhere I need to if I think it will end with a big catfish in hand. I need a reel that can handle getting tossed on rocks, caked in mud, and still perform at a high level to land these heavy duty catfish. My KastKing Rover baitcasting reels are the perfect gear solution to help me land big catfish without breaking the bank. @KastKing

I did the same, I paired it with a catfish sumo chop stick catfish casting rod and it feels and casts great

I have 2 of these . I also have 2 of the Sougayilang Round Baitcasting Reel . I like the sougayilang reel better . They are built the same except the sougayiland cost me 1/2 the price . They cast the same and pretty much perform the same . I use both brands for catfish, salmon , sturgeon and more .

Agree with his comment 100% only cause I like the standard power handle over the smaller double handles.

How would this reel be for carp fishing? I am currently running a 5000 Daiwa black widow carp reel and a Daiwa black widow carp rod. I need a another setup but I would prefer something a bit bigger as I'm afraid if I hook into a 50 pound carp it may spool me. So I'm just looking for a bigger reel that's not extremely expensive.

I would personally prefer a spinning reel for carp. KastKing has several listed on their website for around the same price point as the Rover. I haven’t used any of their spinning reels, but would assume they are similar in quality.

Just curious if you have an opinion. Medium sized river for Salmon and Steelhead?

I do not have any experience fishing for salmon or steelhead so I will caution you against placing too much stock in my opinion. However, I do believe that if you are trolling or leaving baits out to sit very long that a medium sized Rover would perform well in that application. If your fishing style requires repeated casting I think you may be more satisfied with a low profile baitcaster, similar to those used in the bass fishing industry. A simple Google search on the best reels for salmon and steelhead fishing should turn up plenty of results and give you some good ideas about what style of reel you may like best.

Can you put 20 pound test on that 60 reel? What is the heaviest line that it will take? I cant make up my mind between the 50 or 60 for a catfish rod that i will be getting

I have 80lb braid on mine. Haven’t had any problems. Not sure what the heaviest line is they say it will take. Thinking about stepping up to the 70 just for the tighter drag and added line capacity. The right size reel will depend on what size fish you typically catch and how much line capacity you need.

Go with the 50...have 2 of them. 60 just a little to big for cats. I run 20lb mono and have about a 3rd of the spool left after about a 70 to 90 yard cast. Had them for 2 seasons and they're still smooth.

The Kastking 50 isn't bad, and neither is the 60 but on both the cast control doesn't measure up to the Abu. The 70 - 90 versions just don’t make it. If you are going to go that big you want a much sturdier reel seat, secondary mounting apparatus with an under rod clamp. The bigger reels have the same diameter levelwind that just won't take the pressure a fish worthy of this size reel will put on it, either loose the levelwind altogather or at least double the diameter of it and the spool spindle. The drag is inadequate on the 70 to 90 series as well. The 50 really is the best
