The disk system for this was genius. Keeping the disks inside the casing meant there was less risk of scratches meaning the disks lasted longer. Massive reduction in risk of damage from playing it.

It was my every day carry from like 2006-2011. I had mine modded and I'd use it as an mp3 player, I'd watch some movies on it and I would emulate everything from NES to PS1. Only left it once I got my first smartphone.

I had a PSP 3000 and it still sounded the same as a 1000, I see. I happened to get one of the few silver versions, which were paired with certain games. Mine came bundled with Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, the exact game I was getting the console for, without knowing it was a bundle. I admittedly kind of screamed in joy at Game Stop when the guy stopped trying to sell me on a black PSP/Madden combo and listened to the words coming out of my mouth (my specific request for a silver console. When he brought out the KH bundle, he looked disgusted, as though I were going to be disappointed. Seems he was pushing his thoughts on the game/series on me. Just do what the customer asks, I don't need you trying to steer me away from the thing I have clearly requested. I did my research, I knew what I wanted, and I refused to accept anything other than the silvet version. His attitude nearly soured what I would otherwise consider one of my favorite purchases).

I hear you man, I collect stuff like this as a hobby, it makes me so happy to know that people still care for previous generations of gaming like I do. The history of gaming amongst these consoles in undeniable, I hope one day I can meet others that share the same appreciation of older games as you do. I've collected all the Playstation consoles so now I'm moving on to Xbox and Nintendo.

It was really ahead of it's time, and a lot of the parts were quite big and clunky because of it. It was definitely a pain but performed far better then the other handhelds in it's generation lol

You should try the pain that is the Nintendo DSi. There's supposed to be a small gap in the ring to remove the ribbon cable of the top screen, there was none meaning I had to buy a new one. Then when assembling, you had to gently put all the buttons back, the on/off button broke off completely. That was the hardest handheld I've worked on so far.

@@KittyKittyPeowPeow I did a top screen replacement on an original 3ds (even smaller gap with 1 more cable) and that was easier for me than trying to shell swap a PSP-1000. Damn you aftermarket PSP shells!!! The DSi is a tough one as well because if you miss 1 cable the console wont turn on. Forgot to plug in the microphone cable? Console shows no signs of life until you plug it back in haha.

I thought the GBA SP was a pain. This made the GBA SP disassembly look like child's play.

Well engineered mini console, multiple screws and parts and you made it look so easy disassembling and restoring every last piece, great job

I didn't realize the PSP would be such a complex breakdown. Lots of screws and ribbon cables, more than some full-size systems actually. Nice work man.

Spoiled brats that's why and how. My consoles were the most expensive things I owned and I bought most of them off of money I'd gotten from my family either as gift or reward and I didn't have a dozen aunties and grandmas, it would take a long time to have the cash 😂

@@birdgirl8390 Oh me too, except I'd need to wait and ask for them as gifts but confined to either Christmas or a birthday, the only time an old game boy broke is of no fault of my own (batteries leaked), my original DS still works bit the hinges are falling apart. Bare in mind I would use these every day and I was a child and I took care of these things the best of my ability.

You probably already know this, but something that may help all the buttons work better, is to pop out the rubber membrane. Take a piece of printer paper and gently rub the black pads in a circular motion on the paper, one at a time. Using the paper as a very fine abrasive, it can help restore the conductivity of the pads. I learned this from either you, or RetroGameTech, not sure which. Wanted to bring it up just in case you didn't know. Awesome job on the Resto!

PSP is still a impressive technological achievement, a blast from the past. A real masterpiece

I still play my original PSP and I love watching UMD movies on it while traveling.😁 The best time to get cheap games for a system is when it's going defunct and not being supported anymore.

Seven minutes in, and I'm already thinking, "Sweet baby Jesus, this thing is going to be AWFUL to reassemble." The amount of fiddley-ness for disassembly is off the scale. I tip my hat to you, sir, for undertaking this task!

@@xXx_Regulus_xXx Even the iPhone 5/6 were bad, 1 screw wasn't magnetic so it'd often fall off the screwdriver into the phone and not stick to the magnetic mat, roll around the desk etc. Battery stuck down with glue so you had to rip it off carefully and smudge it back on after... Fun times, not. Everything has to be waterproof these days cos ppl are idiots so they glue everything I guess.

thank you for restoring this piece of beautiful engineering, I'm kinda sad they don't make psp anymore, so people who restore broken psp's make me smile, i have 3 psp's that need fixing, one needs a new shell with battery and thumb stick, other needs a new screen, but i do have one working one still.

I remember buying a PSP 3000 that costs the same as the current Nintendo Switch right now. So glad to see different things have changed.

Wow. Just watching you take the PSP apart just shows how much work went into the invention of this handheld.

I love the amount of effort that went into restoring it completely. Not just a deyellowing and a clean but sanding and painting the chrome back on. I'd buy a used psp that was done like this or other consoles if they were given this much love and effort to be cleaned and restored to this level.

like the previous commenters stated, they tried with the PSVita, but flopped due to suffering some of the issues the PS3 had during its launch and more. It was priced $250, almost $100 more than the 3DS at the time of the Vita's release. Its game catalog during release wasn't varied enough to justify its purchase. It had a myriad of gimmicks that either worked but was underutilized (movement sensors, Gravity Rush being a good example of its use), or completely useless that just made the device expensive (touchpad on the back). And to top it all off...it didn't have internal memory until the release of the PSVita Slim, but even that one only had 1GB of space, so you had to buy a memory card separately. It didn't really help that it only accepted the Vita dedicated memory cards that were expensive as balls, so you couldn't use MicroSD cards. Really...the Vita is a sad case of a handheld that had some potential for greatness, but was severely mishandled and neglected by Sony

I just restored one myself! Bought it for 9$ and got it all cleaned up and working again! Amazing piece of tech for its age

Sometimes I just see the thumbnail and give it a like, because now its in the hands of a legend and will be reborn.

Thanks for this. The PSP was an amazing release. Not only did we have PS2-quality games portable, but this thing could also play movies, browse the internet, run IRC and emulate just about anything from the previous generation. It looked, felt and was so futuristic.

To my recollection, this was the longest disassembly I've ever seen on this channel. Wow!

Here is my story of PSP I remember like 15 years ago, My grandma saw my PSP was dusty af so she used water to clean up my PSP. When I got back from school, knowing the fact that my PSP was gone pissed me off so hard that I ignored my grandma for a couple of weeks. Yes, I was a spoiled kid. After those weeks December 2006 Christmas, my grandma prepared a present for me. Guess what, it was a PS3. I was thrilled and happy. I hugged her and gave her a kiss. But unfortunately, that was the last present she gave me. The weeks that I was ignoring her, she was diagnosed with brain cancer. She told my parents not to tell me because she didn't want me to be upset. Few months after Christmas, she passed away. I held her hands when she closed her eyes forever and said,'Thank you.' I kept the PS3 until now. The memories that I can't put down.

The fact that you could run a game like gta vice city stories that had quite the graphics and complexity back then, it really blew my mind..

I appreciate the fact that the brand controls remain the same after years, I recently had to dismantle a ps4 control for cleaning, I literally with 0 experience in disassembling things I could easily identify what I could clean, in my view it was practically stamped " you can even wet and rub it with a brush here, you can only use the brush here, just a friend, don't do anything in this piece". In the end I reassembled everything and it seems that it was even better, a pity that I do not have the knowledge to reassemble some parts of it that I need, but nothing that interferes with the appearance or the main part of the game

This was my childhood console, I still have mine but I need it repair it like you did for this one. I remember when I first got it, it’s one of my best childhood memories. Nothing compares to the PSP, I have a deep connection to it and your video brought back similar memories to when I first powered mine on.

It had one of the best joysticks I've ever touched. Truly a device worth remembering. Oh yes, and a large game library, that too.

Except pretty much any console or handheld manufacturer won't let you take anything apart without voiding the warranty..so it's a two sided sword..

It was back in a time where not everything had to be made ultra-thin, so the console could get away with being a bit chunky. Still some impressive engineering and I was extremely fond of the thickness of my PSP because it made it more comfortable to hold. A shame that their usual attention to detail didn't stretch to a joystick that didn't eat the fingerprints off your thumb. They did much better several years later on the Vita, but the game catalogue for that one was just depressing by comparison. A real shame, since the Vita is such an excellent portable console.

@@melxb Their phones are some of the best designed on the market in terms of overall fit and finish along with hand feel. Honestly, if there were anywhere near me that carried their Xperia 10 IV where I could buy one in person, well, I suspect my resolve to save my money when I don't strictly need to upgrade my phone would lose out and I'd walk out of there with a shiny new phone. They're so pretty, the screen is incredibly bright and Sony's Triluminos image and HDR processing really is about the best you can get, and they kept the stereo front-firing speakers and the headphone jack that they brought back to their flagship lineup. I adore a phone with stereo front-firing speakers, because it just makes the experience of trying to watch videos when you don't have headphones available so, so much better. They also kept expandable storage, unlike Samsung, so you aren't locked into the amount you bought on your phone. Great for people with massive music or film libraries. Plus, I actively prefer when manufacturers keep standard top and bottom bezels to hide sensors and speakers in. I don't think they look worse for it and it allows you to retain the entirety of your display, uninterrupted, for content consumption. Such a good device.

I work on my psp go by myself and boy it's a headache, but seeing this is giving me more headache. I prefer to work on psp go rather than this type of psp, got to love your huge efforts man. Keep it up!

Ah yess, a 1000 model. To this day, I still have my own homebrewed PSP and how many times I have used it. It still works as a charm. I just wish this video was made back in the early 2010s when I had to learn how to replace some parts. I had the terror of placing one of the short housing screws with a long one and cracking the screen. ALOT of trial and error was done. I am happy to see you do a COMPLETE tear down and Restoration

Homebrew on this baby was a beast I played all my childhood favorites on one of those bad boys and it was spectacular. It could even play mp4!!! And works as an mp3 player. All it was missing to make it perfect was 64 emulation or ps2 but man it was great

This little system was so revolutionary when it came out and it got me through some hard times

My most favorite "ASMR" Restoration video. I still have my PSP 1000 till this day in good condition and still play on it, put custom firmware on it downloading game and PS1 games in it. PSP felt like it came out yesterday.

Fun fact: if you line up a bunch of PSP's you get a PSPSPSPSPSP and then suddenly every cat in a 5 mile radius is in your yard.

How do people even come up with this? So intricately done, especially for something done in 2005. I can't imagine what it must look like in 2021 and how long it would take to learn how to develop the technology in theory, let alone practically

I’ve been watching several Nintendo DS repairs and restoration videos, and honestly, these Sony handhelds *seem* so much better constructed.

Which they did at the cost of losing durability, compared to DS. DS was designed to be cheap and lasting long, so its inner design was relatively simple too, and thanks to that OG DS is guaranteed to be alive even after rolling down the stairs several times. PSP? meh... one drop and your wireless on/off switch is dead.

@@kokoseij that is something impressive about Nintendo, their handhelds are dead simple, and by the looks of the internals, so insanely DURABLE! I wish their quality control on screens were better though…

I remember wanting one so badly when i was a kid and my parents refusing to get me one. Thankfully after years of studying hard and getting into medschool i am now in crippling debt 🙏

The PSP was ahead of it's time! A great system plus played movies!

Nostalgia overload! The start up sound when it's powered on & when you start the game

Not sure I’ve even seen a *complete* PSP tear down before. Very impressive (and intense!) With such a complicated disassembly, I’m curious if you ever have to go back to your footage to work out how it all goes back together?

The 100x series, was more complex, I did break one in the past, probably like 2008, and I had to ask someone who can made online shopping during that time I was a kid, just I can get around the issue, the latter modules, such as the 200x and 300x models (not sure about the GO, and the E1000 versions) are much more simple to take apart, and they use less parts to get it to function

Love your work. As a kid I was always fascinated with machines. I remember I would take apart my mother's music boxes to see how they worked and then put them back together.

This made me smile, the PSP was my first console and it saddens me how little attention it gets overall. Truly, it was ahead of it's time

Ah man, the memories. Mine was modded to the gills, had a clear shell with LEDs and a memory card full of emulators and pirated games. Good times

I bought the next gen PSP 2000 back in 2007. It was awesome to play GTA IN 3D on a handheld console. Nicely done

Normally I find these relaxing but this was by far the most stressful video yet, having done a bit of game console disassembly I was surprised by how complicated the PSP's internals are compared to a DS Lite or even some home consoles like the PS4 Pro. Every ribbon cable and screw you disconnected and removed I kept thinking "Now you have to remember exactly where that came from and get it back in place." Really nice result in the end.

I never realized the PSP was so well engineered until you did this complete teardown! Well done, friend!

This brings back fond college memories. Me and all my friends has PSP's, and one of them had a homebrew battery and memory card. We installed the custom firmware on all our PSP's and had such a good time. I even took mine apart, and colored the bottom of the clear buttons in blue permanent marker, so the white LED under each shoulder button would shine through the blue marker and light up the buttons blue

I’m so impressed just how they managed to cram near PS2 level power into this tiny little thing, and how easy it is to repair. This thing is phenomenal. I have my first PSP on the way, a black 3000 in fair condition. Hopefully I can have a lot of fun with it.

Wow, I've been fighting that same loud grinding sound from the UMD drive in my PSP 2000 for like 4 years. I pretty much gave up on it until I saw your fix and I can say that it works perfectly now. Thank you so much!

One of the main reasons I just recently bought a PSP was to play Daxter. I’ve been a Jak and Daxter fan for year’s but I didn’t have a PSP growing up. One of the perks of adult hood, I can buy what kid me wanted. Amazing video as always!!

When I was younger, during my studies, when I spend a lot of time on trains and buses, I always had a console and a book in my bag to make my journey more enjoyable. Those were fun times

Beautiful to see restored. PSP was what I grew on. Shame to see it in such poor condition.

While watching these vids I always get the feeling that I'm watching a ninja in action. The way you systematically go through all the steps to fix and adjust things is astounding. Bravo

I’ve still got my launch PSP and it still works. They really packed it full didn’t they, it’s a bit like a Swiss watch with all those parts.

I remember trying to buy new smartphone for games but then found PSP and it was unbelievably 2.5 times cheaper than smartphones but also with awesome games. So It was perfect purchasing.

One of my favorite consoles to rebuild. I can't even count how many of those I've repaired over the years.

I also wanted to play the PSP, but it is broken and needs repair. So he just lies and waits for his time. Thanks a lot for wonderful memories

The 100x series was more complex, it features a sound card that connects to the motherboard, that not only controls the sound output, but also features the headphone jack, memory stick slot, and the wireless communicator/wi-fi module, motherboards, and sound cards from the 100x series, were twisted, I used an sound card from an TA-082 model (not the ms-399, but different, however, there is no model number) into a TA-079, and there wasn't any sound output, unless I connect some headphones. Instead, I had to use a specific sound card for TA-079 motherboards, which is an MS-268, and finally, no need to plug headphones to get sound output.

PSP 200x and 300x models (not sure about the Go, and the E1000 models) are more simple, since the sound card for the 200x, is a small chip without wireless, and memory stick built in the sound card, only headphone jack, and that's it. The 300x models has no seperated module parts at all, everything is built in the motherboard, including sound module. Now, I know some people hate the 300x series of the psp, is more complex against custom firmwares, and their screen modules has scanlines, to me, to be honest, scanlines didn't bother me at all...

I love that new and exiotic brand of isopropyl alcohol.

I actually owned one of these when I was younger it's so satisfying to see it getting restored.

Your videos always remind me of the scene in Toy Story 2 where woody gets cleaned up by the old man. How there’s so many gadgets and do-dads that get things cleaned so efficiently. Beautifully done!

Omg I forgot how to even use this console. Watching him play and turning it on and putting the disc in was very nostalgic

PSP was way ahead of it's time. Sony should make a new PSP too man

So many good memories with this console too. While the game library may have been a bit limited, the graphics capabilities of something that compact, for that time, were astonishing. I still remember playing the Naruto fighting game and Final Fantasy Crisis Core on my black 1000. The Vita has some of the absolute best joysticks, as opposed to the thumbprint removing ones on these, so if you ever plan to build a portable version of a different console with integrated controls, consider either the Vita or the Switch joysticks.

Apart from just the relaxing nature of watching somebody do these restorations this well, there is something about preserving these items that make me very happy.

These videos always make me appreciate the designs of these consoles just that much more!
