"The slow cancellation of the future has been accompanied by a deflation of expectations. There can be few who believe that in the coming year a record as great as, say, the Stooges’ Funhouse or Sly Stone’s There’s A Riot Goin’ On will be released. Still less do we expect the kind of ruptures brought about by The Beatles or disco. The feeling of belatedness, of living after the gold rush, is as omnipresent as it is disavowed. Compare the fallow terrain of the current moment with the fecundity of previous periods and you will quickly be accused of ‘nostalgia’. But the reliance of current artists on styles that were established long ago suggests that the current moment is in the grip of a formal nostalgia, of which more shortly. It is not that nothing happened in the period when the slow cancellation of the future set in...In the last ten to fifteen years, meanwhile, the internet and mobile telecommunications technology have altered the texture of everyday experience beyond all recognition. Yet, perhaps because of all this, there’s an increasing sense that culture has lost the ability to grasp and articulate the present. Or it could be that, in one very important sense, there is no present to grasp and articulate anymore.”

I was in college in Toronto around 1995, the classmate next to me and I got to know each other. He DJ'd on the weekends and he played a cassette mix tape (remember those?) of his set in his car. I said "wow, this is so unusual and cool. What is this?". He said, "this is Jungle" It was my first time hearing the genre and I was blown away. He said I could keep the cassette, so I did. I kept the tape. About 5 years ago, I downloaded the same cassette onto my iPod and I listen to it on occasion. It has LTJ Bukem, Goldie, Photek, the track 10:25 Ruff With Smooth - Twisted Girl and more. I fortunately attended two raves in 1996 which didn't feature jungle, but then I got into techno/trance. I'm in my late 40's and still love the OG Jungle, but also the new dNb re-incarnations.

On one hand, I'm grateful to have access to the Internet and be able to watch, read, play, and listen to all kinds of stuff I missed out on. On the other hand, I wished I had experienced more of this stuff earlier in life. I feel like the part of my life where the things I could see and do seemed boundless and wonderful was cut short. A lot of what's happening now is, admittedly, confusing and makes me uncertain for the future. And, as much comfort I take in absorbing things from the past, I know I can't stay here forever. In the meantime, thanks for the trip into these jungle beats. edit: typos edit 2: I did *not* think that this comment of mine would get this much attention. One, you guys got one helluva taste in music. Two, I'm glad that I've managed to bring people together through my mopiness. I may be a bit stuck in my old ways, but I still got a lot more life to live.

Great compilation .....Jungle & Techno backed up with Ambient are what helped me recover from a painful divorce in the mid 90's at the age of 40. It just hit the spot for me and was very therapeutic. It helped me get through long motorway night shifts around London so of course Kiss FM with Outer Limits was a fantastic companion! Colin Dale & Favor were my faves at that time. I never looked back and still grooving now...mainly via DJ's Tasha and Storm...

I miss all the raves that would pop up on a moments notice, friends would spread the word a few hours before and a parking garage would be packed out or a closed store or an abandoned warehouse; times were wild and exciting and completely unpredictable.
