LTJ Bukem was my gateway drug into Jungle. I don't how it happened, but I stumbled upon his Essential Mix with Pete Tong right here on KZread about a decade ago. I fell in love with the sound instantly, and still, all these years later I never tire of it.

I have to thank my Dad for playing Jungle and D&B my whole life. When I hear this I’m just swamped in nostalgia of London as a child and remember all the different places my took us around London in the 90’s it’s the small things like this that sit with us as we get older
I was born in 2009 and listening to this makes me feel like I was born in 1995 the best year of music.

Bukem is a hero of mine. I heard him tear up raves in the UK from the early 90s, then he basically created his own sub-genre of music, still going strong today. I guess unsurprisingly, this sort of set is where he tends to sound more comfortable, however - I just bought tickets to go see him at Fabric in Feb '23. He's on the bill with some very contemporary acts (Grey Code anyone?) as well as US house legend Juan Atkins. Should be fascinating! And at 46, I don't know how much longer I'll be going out to experience this music live. Long live Drum & Bass; keep this music alive, spread the word. Peace x

I'm also gonna see him in a couple of months. Though I listened to some of his recent mixes and he seems to play mostly liquid DnB, which is nice and all, but imo doesn't nearly compare to ambient/intelligent jungle. Any why he pivoted away from jungle?
@bluejackmedia
Жыл бұрын
@@jamesmorrison-knight3477 yeah fair - be interesting to see what he plays in London, with one of the best soundsystems at his disposal. GQ is the MC, so you'd hope it'd be quite hard. I've always admired LTJ's musical opinion in general, even his old house sets and more mellow stuff on GL was incredible imo. Grey Code is also playing 'new style DnB' - I've looked him up, sounds shit. Might be in the UKG room for that set :)
@bluejackmedia
Жыл бұрын
And to answer your question, I'd argue he always had a much broader tatse than just jungle. He almost became a deep house DJ, in the very late 80s, and although Logical Progression was released in 95, most of the tunes he'd written years before. Not many people who can rightly claim they invented a whole sub-genre of music. I coiuld go on. I won't :)

I’m seeing him again in London on the 28th. Can’t wait. One day I’ll go see him in the US too, just to check the vibe :)

The atmosphere of this honestly can never be matched not just by todays dnb but any other genre. Its so raw and pure it feels timeless. Ethereal is probably the right word. As someone who used to make music with nothing but a sampler... The programming in this is epic. Those subtle little tweaks and fills with a loop took hours. Can do the same with audacity or a wave editing program in around 20 mins now. This took patience and you had to really UNDERSTAND the system you were using.
This is 25 years old? Fuck me... This is way too good.
