Judge sentences 2 people convicted in Confederate flag confrontation

Two people convicted in a confederate flag confrontation at a child’s birthday party have been sentenced.

In July 2015, just weeks after the Charleston church massacre, a large group of people drove up to a birthday party in Douglasville in trucks, flying American, military and Confederate flags.
The child’s mother, Melissa Alford, said the group walked up to her property and threatened her family.
The people accused in the case said the confrontation started when someone at the party threw an object at one of the trucks, but the mother’s accusations and video of the incident were enough to charge two people, Kayla Norton and Jose Torres, with violating Georgia’s street-gang terrorism law.

Monday morning, a judge sentenced Torres to 20 years in prison, with 13 to serve. Norton was sentenced to 15 years in prison, with six to serve.
“If you drive around town with a Confederate flag, yelling the 'N' word, you know how it’s going to be interpreted,” Judge William McClain said. “It’s inexplicable to me that you weren’t arrested by the police that day.
Watch as both defendants cried while being addressed in court.

“What happened to you and your child was wrong,” Norton told the Alfords Monday morning. “I accept responsibility and I’m so, so sorry.”
Judge McClain told the defendants that families have a right to celebrate a child’s birthday party in peace.
“You have to be held accountable,” the judge said.
Norton and Torres were both in tears as they looked at their families while being escorted out of the courtroom.

I'm pretty sure that IS you...both of you I mean. 3. "I would never walk up to you and say those words to you"... Hmm, that's funny...something gives me the feeling that you "would". Is it maybe because you actually DID? 4. "I'm so sorry that that happened to you"...Really? Are you sure about that? When exactly were you sorry? Before or after you learned of your 15-year sentence? One thing a lot of people seem to not know is that the woman who was charged went to their truck, took out a shotgun *_and loaded it in front of the birthday party guests_* before handing it to the guy who was charged, who then proceeded to point the gun at the party goers and threatened to kill them. Their behavior was unacceptable and is in *_no way_* protected speech and imho they got *_far_* lighter sentences than they deserved. The woman charged saying _”I would never say those things to you”_ was just pathetic as she clearly did... their tears weren’t those of remorse, rather, they were tears for getting caught... let’s hope they actually learn something while they serve their time.

They weren't just sentenced for the one confrontation at the birthday party. The judge did mention that people ALL over town were calling 9-1-1 to report this same group terrorizing people at many different locations, so the sentence reflects MULTIPLE attacks on multiple occasions in multiple locations, which is an indication of organized and premeditated terrorism. This was NOT some isolated incident where someone lost their temper one time.

It's pretty hard to feel bad for them knowing what they did to innocent people just trying to have a birthday party and have fun with their kids. I bet they thought if they did get caught they would only spend a few weeks in jail. Hopefully this sends a message that this shit won't be tolerated anymore. ( Should have never been tolerated ever. ) It says a lot about that nice woman that she had it in her heart to forgive them. You forgive for yourself. Not for the person who did you wrong. Someone ever pointed a gun at my kids and called them names, I don't know if I could be so forgiving.

WAFFEN COLLIDER - what, precisely, is wrong in your eyes? That he agrees with the sentiment *@Jessica Phillips* posted? Maybe, just maybe, it’s your intolerance that’s what’s wrong in this country... I’ve seen several of your replies and you fall squarely into the bigot end of the gene pool.

  • @grendelum

WAFFEN COLLIDER - ok, so you’ve made an *appeal to authority* which has *_nothing_* to do with what I asked... what’s more, you’ve added the *straw man* of communism which has nothing to do with the topic at hand. While their may be *_some_* communists in America (mostly freshmen university students after PoliSci 101), the *_vast majority_* (like 99.9999%) of those on the left want *_nothing_* to do with communism. I personally am a *Democratic Socialist,* which has *_nothing_* to do with _”the workers controlling the means of production”_ (see Marxism and/or Communism), but rather that *healthcare* and *education* are *_basic human rights_* and should be provided, for free, to every citizen of America (Medicare for all and free college) like they are in almost every other 1st world country. I do *_not_* want to _”destroy or replace capitalism”_ as that has *_nothing_* to do with *Democratic Socialism* and capitalism has treated me very well thank you very much. But *_none_* of that goes back to my original question... what, precisely, is wrong with *@David Harden* responding to *@Jessica Phillips* original post? I’m guilty of it myself but let’s do stay on topic this time... yourlogicalfallacyis.com/appeal-to-authority

Because the even though the Gettysburg Flag was going to be the officially flag of the Confederate States. It really could not be the official flag because the war had ended between the north and the south before it could officially be the flag.

While it's not clear which of the people she abused, harassed and threatened was notified of her release, some obviously weren't. Jose Torres was still incarcerated as at 27th June 2020.
