lots of comments talking about how Chris brought the facts (and yes he did), but I would like to point out how, technically, HE directed the debate to the crucial point, the teacher started with an "lukewarm" question of "should people be allowed to wear or display the confederate flag?" and Chris took that question and directed it to a more pressing one: "if the confederates were not fighting to keep their slaves, why were they fighting then?". that's very impressive

bandawhat33 like for example, he was right that the confederate flag today originated as a navy battle flag. Moreover, it definitely wasn’t about tariffs and taxes. That’s been an issue since the 1830’s. Not the 1860’s. Hell 1857 became the lowest rate since then and continued throughout. It was centrally about slavery and race and that’s what the confederate flag, and even by modern times, the symbol.

The kid who mentioned land being stolen as being connected to the US flag made a damn good point, he just made it in the worst way possible. Yes, that’s what that flag stands for, in part, so maybe you shouldn’t be pledging allegiance to that kind of thing either. He seemed incredibly satisfied with himself for saying that, as if it was a rebuttal, when really it was a perfect confirmation of what Chris and everyone else on his side was saying. Flags cannot be separated from any piece of their meaning. America is built on the bones of people who were brutalized, murdered, put through cultural genocides, exploited, etc. That kid thought he was refuting the blonde in green when really he was just shooting himself in the femoral artery.

A North Carolinian southern democrat. The same group of people who supported slavery and the defense of it. James was also the active president during the American civil war and loved the idea of basically taking the land of Mexico as much as possible and proceeded to. What’s funny to me is America is blamed for natives and Mexicans dying yet it was the people who basically made up of the confederacy who did those things and were in power at the time. The union Republican were at no power in the senate till the time of Lincoln and southern democrats were in charge of the government and eventually basically had a monopoly till the issue of slavery became a bigger issue.

Lukie Dookie 343 It’s about being allowed to fly or wear the flag in public today, given what it stands for. Drake tried skirting around the biggest issue with it (slavery) and Chris cites the facts on that. What was absent from the debate (which Chris likely would’ve brought up later) was the many Declarations of Secession by the southern states, most of them explicitly citing the desire to retain slavery. “Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery - the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of the commerce of the earth. . . A blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization.” - Mississippi secession declaration, passed Jan. 9, 1861. This hits at the point the teacher/moderator raised when Drake appealed to the economy. He basically shot himself in the foot bringing that up, as it proved Chris right.

white man's burden I’ve already shown via the secession declarations of the southern states that slavery was what they were determined to secede and fight their northern neighbors over. Closing your eyes to those declarations won’t make them go away. lol They weren’t subtle about what they desired. Ask the guy who made the ‘Stainless Banner’ for the Confederacy: “As a people, we are fighting to maintain the heaven ordained supremacy of the white man over the inferior or colored race: a white flag would thus be emblematical of our cause.” - William Tappan Thompson, He kept going. “As a national emblem, it is significant of our higher cause, *the cause of a superior race, and a higher civilization* contending against ignorance, infidelity, and barbarism. Another merit in the new flag is, that it bears no resemblance to the now infamous banner of the Yankee vandals.” So again, it’s clear what the Confederacy stood for, was willing to secede and fight over, and what their flags represented. 360,222 soldiers lost their lives to preserve our Union; you dishonor them and our current troops by flying the flag of Confederacy... but you’ve already said you prefer to do that, so again, it’s quite telling 😏

white man's burden Our nation’s living document was designed by the founders to allow for the nation to evolve and right whatever wrongs were occurring (via Amendments and Acts). Whereas the Confederacy was founded on this: “Our new Government is founded upon exactly the opposite ideas; its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery, subordination to the superior race, is his natural and normal condition." - Alexander H. Stephens, March 21, 1861 That’s what they stood for. You preferring to have their flag represent you speaks volumes about who you are 😏

I'm 6 years late to this, but there is an overused word here "offended." This word has thousands of interpretations and is personal to every person. No one is mentioning that their heritage makes them feel like the person who flies that flag will murder them at the drop of a hat. Anyone who flies that flag has been shown to be aggressive for the sake of enjoyment or a false fear that someone is trying to hurt them personally. I as a person with Jewish heritage am physically afraid of anyone who willingly displays a symbol of aggression and division. As a member of the LGBT+ community I am afraid for my life when I see this flag flown, because that flag has been used to represent the pride of killing my people. The only reason to fly that flag is to strike fear, or because you feel someone is trying to push back at what your parents taught you. And parents can be wrong.

Yes that isn’t in the constitution right now but it is relevant because he was stating the south back then felt the same way people would feel now if you took away their “right to healthcare”. Southerners who understood that having slaves was completely legal and was their right felt they were being wronged just like how people would feel wronged if only people who could 100% afford health care by themselves got treatment. As this discussion should, it brought emotion to the forefront. Great to hear this discussion in a high school setting. Hate or not, it’s history and all of history isn’t positive. Kudos to the teacher for initiating this discussion.

Kill a Commie For Mommy Barely. Drake is the one that was able to state his "opinion", while Chris only had a couple minutes to spew facts. Chris and the kid with the glasses were the only two people in that room who had facts to back up their arguments.

@@chelseacousin2063 Drake explained how the North put unfair tariffs on the South. The percentage of men that owned slaves in the south working for the economy was 5% and how the Confederate flag has been molded by our society to be seen as racist. Christophers facts were irrelevant and he sometimes contradicted himself. He used extreme words against the south calling them terrorists and traitors. The girl in the glasses literally only used her emotions and everyone elses for her argument. You have nothing good on the anti confederate flag side.
