Jon Snow's Fire Wight's Watch (Melisandre's Secrets 4)

Ойын-сауық

Melisandre is probably going to make Jon into a fire wight, sure, but did you know that she's also going to create a fire wight strike force of resurrected Night's Watchmen to fight at his side? It's true, and you need to know about it. Get ready for some classic mythical astronomy in this one, and even a sash of Timett Son of Timett!

Might not be the best thing for his arc. His whole POV plot revolves around him learning to cope with the loss of the old identity he crafted for himself, and learning to be a better man. Just giving him his hand back after he "learns his lesson" is kind of cheap in my opinion

Could definitely see Jaime and/or Brienne being fire-wighted after facing Lady Stoneheart. Question is, will she pass on the last kiss herself, or will Thoros step in again? Plus, if she's heard about "Arya's" wedding at Winterfell, that could be the impetus for Jaime/Brienne to go north, since they currently seem to lack such a motivation in the books. Timing-wise, could this happen concurrent with the Battle of Ice? Would this allow Brienne to confront Stannis like she did in the show? So many questions, so many plots.....GRRM we're counting on you.

Lady Stoneheart should know that Jeyne isn't Arya though, since the brotherhood without banners told her that Arya was with them and got taken by the hound. That's why in the Merret Frey epilogue, they ask if he's seen the hound with a 10-year-old girl or boy at the red wedding.

The NW vows changed at some point, adding the no wife, no sons part, right? If that was after the LN, was it because they changed from literal blood/life sacrifices pre-NK to figurative blood/life sacrifices post-LN? The new Fire NW seems like it would also satisfy this apparent blood/life sacrifice requirement. Have a wonderful vacation!

Beric may have also been an aspect of Azor Ahai... I get the feeling that resurrection is playing a huge part in every long night and Azor Ahai reborn. Even before watching this video I was doing much research on ASOIAF and got the strong feeling that these are all the same people being reborn throughout the centuries. Such good writing from GRRM, it's almost unbelievable.

Hey 🙂 love this video I wanted to comment from my perspective as a blademsith. Lml, you point out that when lit on fire, Valyrian steel will probably hold up far better than standard steel. Well this is true even in the real world perspective. Magic aside, common steel will start getting softer, even just a bit, at 350-400°f but there are advanced steels developed through complexe technological process like CPM M4 that have extreme edge holding and toughness and that maintain their hardness past 700°F. So a sword made of that steel could handle being lit on fire even for a little while. Whereas a medieval steel sword would sustain irreversible damages after 2 or 3 minutes. I don't know if George did his research, but if he didn't, he guessed right

This is an older video, but I thought I would still comment anyway because I had some interesting thoughts while watching, even though you may have thought of these ideas already. 1) The Night’s Watch Oath is “I give my life and honor to the Night’s Watch, for this night and all nights to come”. Giving their lives to the Night’s Watch makes the brothers thematically undead as you said. And taking “for this night and all nights to come” literally, that would only be possible if the brothers were undead immortals who could serve forever for all nights to come. Also, when Sam is at the Black Gate, he only says the second half of the oath. Which some people have said could mean the first half of the oath was not a part of the original Night’s Watch oath and was added later. This would exclude the “it shall not end until my death” line, leaving it open for the Night’s Watch to serve after death. 2) The line in the oath “I am the fire that burns against the cold” hints at the fiery nature of the Night’s Watch as fire wights. This line along with “I am the sword in the darkness”, “the light that brings the dawn”, and the vow to “take no wife”, equate the Night’s Watch with Lightbringer. 3) This idea is kind of out there, but… So in the video you said that the obsidian weapons given by the Children of the Forest may have been the weapons that the original Night’s Watch ignited with their blood. And that this may be the origin of the belief that glass candles can only be lit by blood from one’s hands. But if the original Night’s Watch wielded flaming obsidian weapons, then the weapons of the original Night’s Watch were literally GLASS CANDLES. Which could mean that the War for the Dawn was (and will be) a PSYCHIC battle fought on the astral plane as well as the material plane. The Night’s Watch being capable of remote viewing would definitely add to the idea of them being “watchers”. And the original Night’s Watch being astral-projecting glass candle sorcerers would tie into the Odin symbolism of the three known Lord Commanders (and parallel figures like Beric), and the berserker/ulfhednar references of Mormont and Jon in particular that you have talked about in other videos. Also, the Night’s Watch are metaphorically candles. That which are used to bring light in night and darkness. This idea has become a full on brain worm for me, and I am envisioning the Night’s Watch using flaming obsidian glass candle weapons to enter a trance state so their minds astral project to do psychic battle with the Others (alongside psychic tree wizard Bran of course), while their fight wight bodies enter a berserker battle fury to do physical battle with the army of the dead. Which honestly seems outlandish and fanfiction-y. Then again it might just fit with George’s other sci-fi work. But at this point I am half convinced that Sam will use a glass candle at some point to fight the Others. He already used obsidian to kill one Other and become Sam the Slayer. He is in close proximity to glass candles. The maester initiation ritual is spending a night trying (and failing) to light a glass candle. Sam lighting a glass candle and using it would pass and supersede the maester initiation, in a way fulfilling Sam becoming a maester. Again, brain worm. 4) I just like the symmetry between the Others being icy white shadows, and the Night’s Watch being fiery black shadows.

I am glad you liked it! I also realized this kind of goes along with your theory of Daenerys using a glass candle. Psychic battles seem out there for the series so far, but if magic is supposed to be increasing with each book, then who knows…

I loved this series! lol, of course Timett ties into the grand ASOIAF plot somehow. Oh, George. So Timett son of Timett, a Burned Man, kills the wine-seller's son by stabbing his hand - giving him a red hand or "burned hand" - and cutting his throat, giving him a "red smile" - turning him into a Weirwood. Okay but this is making me think of Beric's "any knight can make a knight." So like, "any WIGHT can make a WIGHT" Timett is a Burned Man and symbolic fire wight, and he kills the wine-seller's son and turns him into a symbolic Weirwood/burning scarecrow/fire wight. Mel will (probably) turn Jon into a fire wight, and she is already fiery, possibly a fire wight on her way to becoming a fire Other. Beric Dondarrion is a fire wight and Sandor Clegane (a cold other in this scene, like the kingsguard are cold other knights) makes fun of him for "knighting" the brotherhood without banners by laying his sword on their shoulders. Such a knighting ceremony to me only seems one breath away from ceremonially cutting someone's throat. If you knight someone with, let's say, a burning sword, that would be like setting fire to their arms or hands. The brotherhood without banners under Beric and now under Stoneheart can probably be considered burned men/fire wights now too. The Faith of the Seven seems to have started in Essos with the Andals, and if fire magic was being practiced in Essos at the time, then the Faith could have risen from altered fire mage/R'hllor ceremonies. I love all the connections you and George draw between death, servitude, vows, sacrifice, and slavery. I like that both the Night's Watch and the kingsguard seem symbolically dead. It's very curious to me that both the kingsguard (icy, living in a warm clime) and the night's watch (fiery, living in a cold clime) vow to own no lands and sire no children. The walking dead are essentially slaves to their god, so of course they can't own anything. Corpses can't sire children either. Melisandre can only have shadow children through intercourse, which would result in, let's say, a night's watchman breaking his vows. Maybe those vows are still just the Faith's twisted version of icy or fiery servants being sacrificed to become undead servants, or maybe the vows were created as safeguards so that a living icy servant couldn't be stolen away to become a fiery servant instead or something like that... I'm guessing there's a similar setup with the icy Others somehow, unless they circumvented the need for an icy priestess by taking Craster's sons? Or maybe Dany needs to become an icy queen, opposite of Jon becoming a fire wight? There's some interesting possibilities going on here

I was pretty stale on ASOIAF after the last season of GoT and debating if I even wanted to read Winds when it comes out and haven't started Hot D yet but this has *ahem* rekindled (get it? Cuz fire?) my interest after these 3 years. A mighty feat considering these 3 years have each felt like they were a decade long. That earned you a sub.

Looking carefully at the wording of the Night's Watch oath, I noticed something. It's not phrased as a vow, is it? It's a statement of fact. Maybe it means that the man of the Watch will not father children (hold lands, etc) because he is about to be converted into a fire wight. Maybe he's just supposed to give informed consent for the transformation about to take place, proving he understands all the implications. That makes me question the Night's King story. If the brothers were all fire wights, then the Night's King reaching some accord with the Others isn't so strange. Just undead foot soldiers from both sides realizing they have more in common with one another than their masters. He might have enslaved the fire wight men of the Watch using the same magic used by the Others to control the wights on their side. In that case, maybe the story of the Kings of Winter and the King Beyond the Wall uniting to overthrow the Night's King is also the story of when and why the Night's Watch switched to using living men, perhaps less vulnerable to magical compulsion and definitely less likely to find common cause with the Others. I fell out of watching these because the hour plus streams were too much for me. These short form videos are much better, and I'm glad I checked back!

With all of this repeated foreshadowing of future events, it’s a wonder it’s taking so long to finish. Is it possible all of the side work GRRM is doing is meant to flesh out the (his)story before he completes it? Incorporating the Silmarillion before he finishes as part and parcel of the whole.

i think the main answer to "why's it taking so long" is that he writes from inspiration, so even if he knows roughly where the story is going, each scene or chapter probably needs a signature gust of inspiration to really bring it to life. Contrast ASOIAF with Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight archive and you'll see the difference between someone who writes from inspiration and someone who writes from a plan / formula

I kinda like the idea that the night's watch are unintentional paladins of the lord of light. They take the oath, they are the light against the dark, ect. It makes sense why the order used to be held in high regard.
