Chosen of R'hllor (Melisandre's Secrets 5)

Ойын-сауық

The Melisandre's Secrets series comes to an exciting conclusion with the resurrection of Jon Snow! I've decided to do this one live, with a scripted first half flowing naturally into a structured discussion of all the possible ways it could go, and all the possible magical deeds Melisandre might perform at the Wall. Some brand-new theories await!

When Jon says "The Wall is no place for a woman" and Mel says he is wrong and starts talking about the Wall's lore, that is probably another hint for Mel-Night's Queen parallel. Maybe Mel can see, in some sense, that a woman was behind the construction of the whole Wall and Night's Watch.

My pet theory is that Ice is on a journey to becoming lightbringer. Ned went to his death knowing he might die to save his children, this can easily be framed as a sacrifice, to his own sword. The sword is split into widows wail and oathkeeper, but the smith quite specifically says he does not know why the two swords are a deep blood red, he couldn't replicate his work. My suspicion is that Jaime will be forced to sacrifice his love Cersei for honour, using widows wail. Next Brienne will be forced to sacrifice her love Jaime for honour, using oathkeeper. Both Jaime and Cersei are two halves of the lion from the story of lightbringer/nissa nissa Also, Cersei's prophecy makes sense this way. Brienne will then be duty bound to return the two blades to their rightful owner (Jon probably?) When the two swords are reforged into one, they are filled with the power of three blood sacrifices and something lightbringery happens! :) Maybe the sword functionally is lightbringer, but they call it Fire Just because it would add yet another layer of meaning to 'a song of Ice and Fire'

@@umwha I was thinking she'd have to kill jaime to keep her vow to catelyn/lady Stoneheart That was my thinking But yes it could happen that way, I'm not super convinced of things happening exactly how I said they would I think the core idea of ice's transformation through repeated sacrifices is good though :) To answer the question of how the blade could be reforged with so few smiths capable of doing the job, I think either Tobho will head north for work, or they will just use dragonfire to do it

@@GiordanoBruno42 I emphatically agree with your concept of Lightbringer having to undergo a ritual transformation. I was working on a similar idea a long time ago and here's some things I noticed. However, I will gladly have it known that almost all of this is based on Dave's (LML) previous research and I have simply drawn my own conclusions from it. I strongly encourage all to re read his essays or watch his videos from the beginning. Dave was the first to see that both Ice and Longclaw are used as a symbolic stand ins for Dawn on numerous occasions, and that Dawn is an important symbol of the Morningstar/Lightbringer/Venus archetype. Now Venus has two phases, the Morningstar and the Evenstar, or rather Phosphorus and Hesperus. Thus we see that these celestial deities, though representing two, are actually one; its division only manifested through ritual sacrifice and transformation. It seems fitting that Brienne the Maid of Evenstar would be the one to wield a sword that once symbolised the Morningstar but has been resurrected through ritual sacrifice to become the Evenstar. I have a lot more to say on the nature of this ritual transformation of the Morningstar, and if you like I'll post it in this comment thread in the near future.

You really do have to just put it all down in writing sometimes to start seeing the bigger picture. Hi, I have recently discovered your channel and although I am a little bit late to the party I want to say I am really impressed by the content. I love ideas concerning Jon's resurrection concerning aspects of sacrifice, Jon's new nature (fire wight, white walker, similar to Coldhands, or maybe some hybrid with similarities to all three: white walkers, Beric Dondarrion and Coldhands) and how it will affect him. I have to say my personal favourite would be if Mel tried to resurrect Jon and FAILED, resulting in her crisis of faith. We know she has a talent to misinterpret her visions. The situation at Wall would become really dire for some reason (Others, Boltons, anything to be honest) and Mel would decide to use all the King's Blood that is there, which is Jon's body and Shireen. The power coming from the fire used to burn Jon's body and Shireen would completely overwhelm Mel due to Jon's heritage and go out of control and by accident fulfilling her prophecy of waking dragon from the stone and the prophecy of Azor ahai Reborn. Shireen would provide stone from her greyscale, salt from her tears and smoke from her burning body. And from this uncontrolled fire, Jon aware of his Targaryen heritage would come back to life as some being not truly alive but different from the Coldhands and Beric due to Shireen's sacrifice and the power of used blood. The stress coming from Jon's realization that his whole life was a lie and he truly knew nothing (he didn't even know what he doesn't know - his father's identity) would make his hair go white, his skin would be pale, and his eyes would become red(he would look like his wolf, hence name "White wolf") and he would emerge from the fire to everyone's shock. Realizing what Mel has done (burning Shireen), he would take Mel's flame (life) to his sword by killing her, forging lightbringer (prophecies are really dangerous for the people following them, like Mel). Mel would be like Nissa Nissa, as she would be something like mother to him due to bringing him to life. This would make it really eldritch. But possibilities are nearly countless, whatever it will be I am sure it will be incredible.

I feel like making a shadow baby is another Mel Red Hair-ing vision. I dont really know what it would do in the plot. The apparent shadow baby foreshadowing could be more of Mel thinking she knows what she's seeing. Imagining she's meant to loose his shade from his body, when actually she's being shown the moment she puts it back.

Doubt it will go down this way but, I think it would be a really good twist if Mel gives Jon the last kiss before anyone realizes his spirit is in Ghost and restores his body but not his spirit, leaving it open for Night's King to inhabit. Night's King then disguised as Jon leads a wildling army to Winterfell where he acquires the horn that can bring down the Wall from the crypts, and is driven from Jon's body after he blows it.

A bit of a reach, but that shit would be SO fire to me if it ended up being the case.

It's implied the shadow baby things Melisandre creates are actually kind of similar to skinchanging. Stannis has nightmares when each one is active. And they don't just look kind of like Stannis, in the books it's clear they are shadowy clones. Stannis is riding shotgun and can see what the shadow is doing, just like how the Starks often enter the wolves' minds while dreaming. So these shadows are almost like forcing someone's spirit - which can become free of their body, or any body (as we see in Varamyr Sixskins) - to create a somewhat physical form outside of their body, using fire magic as the crutch (quite similar to a lot of people's theories about the Others being spirits that use ice magic to form their actual bodies once they were forced out of the weirwoods). So the implication is that any shadow baby made with Jon would be a hell of a lot stronger, because given how similar the shadow babies are to skinchanging, Jon's own magic would make the shadow a lot more tangible and powerful, and he'd be able to have more control over it. Combine that with the fact that Melisandre won't actually be trying to remove Jon's life force to create one of these shadows, but actually put it back inside his body, and this could get very interesting. If Jon does end up willingly having sex with Melisandre, I think it will be to add to his life force, rather than diminishing it like with Stannis. The question is how is Melisandre going to power that? If she doesn't want to use her own life force (and it's questionable if she even could, given she says she doesn't even need to eat and wears her own glamour, so may no longer be quite alive herself), then someone's going to have to burn. And it's well established that children have more life force. Gilly straight up claims that's why every wight but one laser focuses on her and ignores Sam when the Other came for the baby, even before the Other actually had eyes on her. Maybe the Others can see through their eyes, but Gilly had to have picked up on something from Craster to be so sure. Craster doesn't just sacrifice anyone to the Others. He just always sacrifice his oldest wife or something, or try to capture other wildlings. But always children? I think Shereen burning to raise Jon is becoming more and more likely.

I just want to say I really love seeing your birds on stream having a ball. I had a lorikeet I was really close to, but due to my parents splitting up I wasn't able to give her anywhere near as much attention as she needed since I lived half and half with each parent, even though I spent the most time with my bird by far out of anyone in the family. Eventually my mum moved out of the city, and since I was still in school, my siblings weren't at home that much and neither was my dad for work, so if I had chosen to take her to live with me, there'd be huge sections of the day where my lorikeet would have been alone in the house, and that was going to make her really depressed. I chose not to take her to live with me at my dad's house for that reason when my mum left the city. My mum worked from home and often had people over. Despite the fact that my bird wasn't going to be able to see me anywhere near as much I thought she'd have more social interaction in general which is something birds really really need (the only reason we didn't get two birds is because we rescued her after she fell out of the nest, and yes, we did try to find her mother and return her to the nest but then she kept reappearing every day for a week and we were worried she would starve). And as I'm sure you know, but maybe not people who haven't had a bird, because birds are often in cages it's not like a dog or cat who'll just walk over if they want attention. You have to actively dedicate yourself to doing it. My mum couldn't be bothered, and I was wrong to leave my bird with her. I was considering taking her back, and at the least was planning to find and/or build her a whole new and much bigger cage with a whole bunch of new toys and give it to my bird as a present. But then she got sick. I begged my mum to take her to the vet and I was 4 hours drive away with no car to come and do it myself. She lied to me and said she had an appointment booked. She didn't and my bird passed away not long after. She was about 10 and could have lived to 20. I'd still have her. I have a lot of regrets about all this. So I'm sorry if anyone's reading this and has gotten really sad but my reason for saying it is it really warms my heart to see someone treating their birds right. Give those birds as much bird seed, toys and love as you can. And mine loved mango sorbet so I occasionally gave her a drop lol.

I’ve been wondering if part of the magic of the wall has to do with the actual oath that the men of the Watch must each swear. Like a magic spell that is reinvigorated and powers the magical properties of the wall with each man who recites the words and takes the oath. Perhaps it was part of how the children and the first men combined the magic and physical properties of the wall and that the magic has endured so long within the wall.

no I haven't... always taken those lines to simply indicate he casts a big shadow over the story, but who knows. He's so far from the action at the Wall rn so it's hard to speculate

It synchs with Tyrion is Dr. Bruce Banner/Hulk (Marvel) allusion, probably about the Secret Wars, but I haven't figured the true payoff. So far I only find Tyrion personality traits and theme (temper and lonely man, respectively). The shadow is allusioned by Spidey's black suit (pre-Venom) that he gets from the Secret Wars and goes to Fantastic Four to be rid of. Jaime is mirroring Spiderman elsewhere (his and Cercei's death/Gwen Stacy), but It seems to be a separate allusion since in the Gwen/Cercei Tyrion is Green Goblin (or at least pumpkin bombs/Wildefire). Fantastic Four show up in Aegon(Griff)'s retinue (Jon/Johnny,Rolly/Ben Grimm, Miester H.../Reed Richard{ooh I never considered his name was Reed...hmmm}, Invisible Woman/Tanner's Wife/Septa Lemore); but not sure if that separate too, being they won't meet a shadow baby, I'm assuming. ?Macorro? with the face tats seems to be Molecule Man, again not sure how it all connects or if it's meant to. It should have a endgame payoff, all the Allusions seem to (rarer, the more direct) but I haven't figured it out yet.

New to the channel (via Quinn's ideas) and loving the deep dives into lovecraft / deep ancient lore hidden in plain sight. Keep it up!! It's nice to be excited about game of thrones again. Had a thought re: John and Azur as parallel figures, where John's skinwalker abilities could be the equal/opposite to the Night King and his abilities to raise/control the dead - humans, as well as creatures on land and in the water. It might not be Melisandre that does the mass resurrection of the night's watchmen, but John reaching out with his skinwalker powers after he's had some special 'training' from Mel.... Or perhaps Mel using John as the vessel to amplify her powers and send that final kiss to a wider audience. Thoughts?!?

Maybe fire others can melt away into fires and come from out of fires somewhere else. The others seem to disappear into an out of the trees, letting them travel quickly wherever they wish to be. That skill could explain why their religion sees. It’s so important to always have a night fire burning. Because without that, they wouldn’t have somewhere to materialize out of or go into.

So… if Mel becomes an incorporeal Fire Being would she choose to inhabit Ghost if he was sacrificed? An undead Fire Wolf! She might also be able to switch to a Dragon later, she’d like that better…. For the meteor they keep saying you can see the Wall from the High Tower. Euron could get the Horn from Sam and might know how to use it to break the meteor or something. He’s going to cover the towers of Old Town in a tide of blood after all.

It's curious when Mel says she "dreamed" of the Wall, aren't dreams supposed to be the machinations of the Great Other? is she just being metaphorical, she might have just seen a vision, it's still curious that she is giving in to the idea of dreaming.

Interesting observation about to Mel's morality with regards to what needs to be done to save the world. Kind of mirrors Azor Ahai's whatever-it-takes morality to reach the same end goal when he killed Nissa Nissa. Is Mel good or bad? Is fire good or bad? Questions to ponder.

What kind of weapons would Mel be susceptible to if/when she completes her Fire Other transformation, if any? Dragon fire maybe, since dragons are fire made flesh and Mel would be a different sort of fire made flesh? (Similar to how The Others, if all Blood of the Dragon/"frozen fire", are vulnerable to dragonglass and Valyrian steel aka frozen fire?)

Leaving a lil coment! :D Thaanks, great theory theory! A lot of things make more sense now. I have a little of topic question. I was wondering about Mel cursing all the usurpers with Edrics blood and claiming afterwards that their deads were her doing. Even though we know it probably isn't at all, every murder of the king we have pretty well explained. Deos Mel had any involment in it or she is just profiting from circumstances.

Now, im not George, but if it were me, i would write a ressurected / wight/ other pov similar to how hodor is when bran is warged into him. As in, like, observing their own actions from somewhere deep inside their body, without real control. Hell jon could be forced to take a backseat to ghost in a protective mindset, fight ghost for control over. Could also affect the idea of jon surviving. Whichever part of the fused entity that is GhostJon not in control being forced to observe from their wolf body, and taking control means piloting the jon body. I also wonder about dany being partly on her way to being something like Mel. The chapters around the birth and death of her baby/ the birth of dragons has always left me wondering if she didnt die in childbirth, or at least come close to it. Mirri may have used rhaego not for the dragons, but to save dany. Kinda plays into her+ drogon becoming the "stallion that mounts the world" That also makes sense to me because if jon is an ice man, she is a fire woman- its the azor ahai myth but inverted. Like a rhyme and not a repetition. Like a requiem to to original song of ice and fire
