    The reason they call it mental illness is because they can’t control their mental stability ( it’s an illness) and can’t choose to not only see the negatives. You can obviously work on it, but their mind isn’t as flexible as most people, so the will to push through and past all that heaviness takes A LOT of will power. Everyone’s depression is different and everyone experiences it at different levels, so no one can understand what another is going through. I think the best thing you can do for someone who is suicidal or anyone really, is just radiate happiness, so that your possibility is contagious and hopefully rubs off on someone that needs it.

    I have gotten to the point of wanting to die before. It was a period where I felt like I was stuck living a life I really didn't want. I also didn't see people around me as being real. I think that might be why some people watch your podcast and it saves them. When they listen to you they realize that there are still alright people out there who are real and get shit. So it brings back a sense of hope towards life/humanity in general. I can't really speak for them but that is how I actually feel. There are a few people on KZread who helped me shift my perspective and decide that life was worth it again. I guess you guys are just the people we couldn't really find IRL.

    47:41 I feel like that all money,fame,legacy, ect only adds to what a person already is. So for example if your generally a depressed sad person and mostly see bad in the world and suddenly get 100 million dollars than your a sad person with money. So I don’t necessarily think someone who’s unhappy while having wealth should be a sign to me that if im also unhappy without that then theres no hope.

    Edtwo has it right, it’s totally like a little dark cloud, then your whole perspective on anything changes. All of a sudden your new job is not good enough, that joke you said was just too awkward, etc. Any mistake becomes huge. Sometimes that kinda voice in your head gets so loud it feels like it’s too much to fix and there’s no point in fixing anything Edit: and yea you don’t feel better until you remember what your living for, cuz sometimes the depression voice, focusing on short comings, gets super loud. I’ve always been an optimist, but when I get in that state it’s super hard to get out of

    I honestly have been in that place multiple times, most of the time it’s not about getting into a dark place. It’s when you were handling things so well and then something minuscule happens and you freak out. It started with oversleeping for me and then being upset that I wasn’t doing anything, then I never felt like doing anything that I used to love. I started getting angry at everyone and everything, I would start yelling for no reason. Most of the times that I thought about it would be when I fought with my mom and she would insult me with something that had been simmering in my head for months and years. It was like a confirmation that I wasn’t worth anything. Literally the only thing that helped was Prozac. Depression and anxiety are caused by your brain not functioning correctly. These drugs straight up fix that problem almost instantly. As soon as I started taking it, I felt so productive and energetic, I wasn’t angry at the world anymore. Since then I’ve not even once had those thoughts and it’s like living a whole new life.

  • @alisonmelendrez1612
    @alisonmelendrez16125 жыл бұрын

    I have had those thoughts HARD CORE (unfortunately), but something that kind of dimed them down was reading a book called Struck by lightning (SPOILER ALERT), the main character dies when he accepts his "fate". reading that book helped me realize that if I kill myself, I'll never know if I got to where I want to be in life, I won't know how my "story ends". Also, therapy helped me a shit ton. You may not believe in it, but if you give it chance, it might help you too

    Robin Williams got me by surprise too. I thought that dude had THE LIFE! He was playing the voice of Disney characters (or at least the 1 we all know), he was also in other family films like Mrs. Doubtfire & Flubber, he even was in Insomnia (the 1 adult/older people film I knew he was in). I honestly thought that dude would die a happy man. When he killed himself I got to thinking "What the hell was on his mind in his final moments?" (Another great you guys forgot to mention was Heath Ledger.)

    From my experience, a lot of the people I've talked to who were really depressed were either really ugly as fuck (horrible facial acne/scars/dis figuration), had a life threatening condition (like severe lupus, cancer, etc.), suffered from a painful loss of a loved one (best friend, parents, etc.), or were just in a bad situation (broke poor, abusive parents, constant bullying, homeless, etc.) In short, I think everyone has a breaking point and can reach that "dark" or depressed state. Nobody is immune.

    alright about the suicide thing. You know the worst feeling for most people is heartbreak? usually that shit heals within a few months or so but imagine haveing the same level of sadness within you almost 24/7 for 3 or 5 or 10 years straight. Some people crack sooner but ultimately what I'm saying is that every person has a snapping point where they just go "I can't do this anymore, it's not getting better, not even a little". And it isn't just as easy as "just do what makes you feel good" cuz then you wuldn't be suicidal in the first place, maybe only a little bit depressed at worst. If you are suicidal there's a problem that seems unfixable. Maybe it's a trauma and you probably doesn't even know how to fix it or something like that. Maybe you have tried already so hard to fix the problem but it won't budge. And the longer you walk around with this problem the more shitty you will also feel about yourself for being a loser because you can't fix the problem. depression is like a demon. When it's at it's worst you can almost hear and see a literal demon in your head talking to you, because you are so used to your depression that it gets its own persona.

    Great podcast session as always, I usually don't comment (cuz I'm a bitch with a frail heart who wilts when senpai doesn't notice me) but I do have something to contribute to the conversation on suicide and depression. EDIT: It's a long ass comment so feel free to ignore lmao. I was diagnosed with clinical depression two years ago, but probably had it for much longer than that but never got the help I needed- black families and all that. I would say I'm privileged; my parents are well off and I have been adequately taken care of for all my life, and my family loves me. Although, I was severely bullied, emotionally and physically, in middle school. That shit fucked me up. Other than being beat up and smacked around, I was called ugly. So much so that a girl once visibly wretched when someone said I was prettier than her. I stuck out in my girls dorm photo because I had my head down. I couldn't look at the camera. Even though I'm 22 now and I know that I am in fact very pretty, even though it's been 12 years since then, I still have a strong aversion to selfies.I Relating to the latter parts of the podcast, to a small extent, I kinda deserved it. My hygiene was abysmal in boarding school, and 3rd world countries don't coddle your feelings. We had a strong hierarchical system, 7th graders were always bitches and errand gophers to senior grades etc. I'm rambling. ANYWAY, my self esteem took a hit it never really recovered from. Even when I changed schools I had adopted the stupid defense mechanism of insulting myself before anyone else could. To the point where people showed strong concern for how I saw myself. I wasn't very good at reading social cues and my mom didn't approve of me wearing makeup at my young age or wearing revealing clothes. A cocktail of that mess and puberty led to me having severe depression and anxiety. As I was leaving my teens behind, I felt like I had moved on from the trauma and shadows of my bullying. They didn't bother me so much anymore, I was moving on, but the anxiety and depression that had become the framework of my mind remained. The suicidal thoughts I had entertained ever since I was 15 started to become actual considerations instead of fleeting thoughts. And even at the age of 16 I would go into the backyard of the dormitory to cry and think of reasons I actually mattered. Then I came to Canada for further learning the week before I turned 17 and the environment changed. Mental health was something I could talk about. Then when I was 20, I just couldn't take it anymore. I *knew* I was loved, I *knew* I had potential and that I was smart and talented. I started seeing a counselor and a psychiatrist. BUT- but, my brain was an awful place. I always needed affirmation from others. I couldn't love myself. I started depending on people too much, and it was an unfair burden to make them worry about a suicidal friend. I remember thinking to myself that if I can't help myself, no one can help me. Everybody has their own shit to deal with, and I thought, no, I believed, it would all be best if I solved this ongoing problem permanently. Again, to bring it to the podcast again, Robin Williams was a factor in when I was considering it. This man had been struggling with his mental health for decades. It made me realize that it never goes away. And this man fought his hardest to make people laugh, to make the world a better place. What hope did I have? I haven't been suicidal for months now, and that's an improvement. But there's always that lingering voice in my head that whispers it's only a matter of time till the clouds come back again. But, I'll be able to get through it. I'm strong. We all are. Sorry for the essay.

    Robin Williams killed himself, because he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and was also struggling with dementia.

    This is where a double standard of shit for men that are abused. They are supposed to be strong so they can't touch s woman . But being hit and assaulted by a person and not fighting back bc you'll be put in jail . Just bc you are supposedly stronger doesn't mean you can't be hurt by someone beating on you.

    From my past experience and understanding, you think about suicide when your life is so agonizing to live, that death seems peaceful and the only way out of feeling and experiencing this life is to end it.

    It’s sad because Amber completely destroyed Johnny’s acting career 🤦🏻‍♀️ It’s disgusting that a woman would manipulate the media like that. Everything our forefathers have fought for in feminism thrown into the toilet 🚽

    Edric looks like my boyfriend lol! Like they both have a long face, mono lid eyes, similar nose, similar hairstyle. They both talk the same and act similar too. It’s crazy. But love him on the podcast though! He should come on more.

    If it's so strong, I'd love to hear an example. I'm not expecting much (or anything at all tbh)
