@@CodyAnderson333 The way that I see it God should represent all energy that preserves love, life and peace. Anything beyond that like rules to not eat shellfish or pork, having to wear veils, might have been beneficial in the time they were established but the continuation of these archaic practices seem only useful for keeping humanity feeling small and voulnerable to control. While religion is generally the way people are exposed to God, it is also become the tool used to limit our understanding. Even Jesus despised the religious leaders of his time.

I complete agree with asking questions. I remember when I was trying to leave home for college. I told my parents another reason for want8ng to leave, is so I can find Christ myself (he wants willing participants). And they yelled at me and wiuodnt listen so I dropped it. If all my life I've been forced to go, am I really willing 🤔. I'm still christian and love my church though I don't go as much. It does ground me and make me feel better everytime I visit, though 😊

Thank you for this episode, David! I remember hearing about how your father is a pastor many years ago, and since then have been curious of your personal faith. Even through your experiences with dispiriting individuals/churches, it encourages me that you still place your hope in Christ. What you guys spoke of is exactly what is in the Bible. Romans 3:23 says that "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God". At the end of the day, we all mess up, we all do hurtful things, and we all fall short of who God designed us to be - people that love Him and all those around us. But despite all this, God is still good. Jesus Christ died so that we could be forgiven, and through that we can be reconciled and have a personal relationship with God. This is exactly why I think Christianity is so amazing. I've seen and realized how much of a POS I am, yet this is a God who has forgiven and loves me, so that in turn I can strive to love others. Joe, I'm sorry that your elders weren't able to answer your doubts, and dismissed such worthwhile questions. 1 Peter 3:15 says that we should "always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have," and that we should do this with "gentleness and respect". I also feel saddened that there are picket-sign holders who don't recognize this fact. I hope they can be reminded of 1 Corinthians 13: "If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal... Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs..." I hope that if there is a part of you that is still searching, that God may reveal who He truly is to you, and that He provides you with a loving, genuine, and humble body of believers! Thank you so much again for sharing your experiences! Although individuals and churches may fail, the Word of God stands. I pray that you guys can place your hope in Jesus alone!

I related to this one so much! My dad is a pastor too at a small church (planted a korean church) and i live with roomies that are jehovahs witnesses so like our experiences with religion are so different!!! this was so informative and relatable!! thanks so much for this~ I straight up feel the same way and i think that questioning religion and asking things are important for us to grow in our beliefs/ faith! thank you so so much for this

I loved this episode so much! Im a christian as well and haven't really felt connected with any other christians cuz I felt like I was "doing it wrong" in that sense that I was sinning so much. This episode taught me so much and to be more confident In my beliefs and faith. Thank you guys for being so cool and straight forward about your faith. Keep it up

Let the Bible define if you are a Christian or not, not other people, or even other "Christians". I encourage you to read 1 John. Basically a diagnosis for Christianity. Praying God opens your heart to be receptive to his Word and strengthens your faith in the process.

Just a big thank you for this discussion. It is everything that I'm personally experiencing about leaving the church to find out where I stand as an individual and applying the religious foundations to my life. I don't want to force other people to feel like they need to be a Christian or Buddhist or Catholic based on my spiritual beliefs. The church I used to be at ran like a business and disconnected me from what the sermons were about. I didn't need that in my life and I hope to find what I'm looking in this world.

I have some pretty good memories at my church. My pastor was the most amazing man ever and accepted everyone in his church, including gay people. When my uncle was killed he would come to my grandma's house almost every day to see how she's doing and he even paid the funeral cost when she couldn't pay. He's a true man of God.

David, its really humbling and inspiring hearing about how you still go to church and how you talk about faith, fr fr faith is not facts

David, I love your Filipino accent. My man is Filipino. When he’s super drunk. That comes out of his mouth. Then when he’s sober. He sounds like a regular non-accent guy.

You guys are actually having a pretty fruitful conversation. This is what really interests me. I gotta give it to Joe for being open minded. And he actually knows what True Faith is which was sick. Man, If Joe ever converted, he'd be a great guy for that because he has the experience of being in the deepest end of doing some crazy things. I hope one of these days he can give it another shot.

Hey man, I'm sorry to hear about your experience with the church. If it's OK, I'd like to share something from the Bible which really resonated with me that's related to your situation! I believe that God is the very one who gives us the desires, passions and gifts that we have. Psalm 139 says "For you (God) created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful..." Furthermore, Paul, one of the apostles who wrote much of the New Testament, said "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." What I mean in sharing these two passages with you is to say that your passions don't have to conflict with serving God at all! In fact, if we recognize that our gifts are given to us by a God who truly loves us, I think we will be able to pursue them harder than we ever had before, because we know that these are passions that are meant to serve a purpose. That by itself, I believe, can be thought of as serving God. I have a story about a friend of mine who is an amazing piano player. He's currently studying at one of the most famous performance institutions in the country. After the biggest recital of the year, an audience member came up to and told him that out of everybody that played, he was the only one who stood out and exhibited such passion and brilliance on the musical instrument. My friend wasn't playing some gospel song or some hymn. Instead, he was playing a classical piece that many people have heard a thousand times over. My friend told me that the reason he thinks he stood out was because of the fact that he acknowledged his gift was God-given. He acknowledged that every time he even touched the piano, it was a privilege granted to him by God. And because of that, he practiced everyday to the best of his ability, and thus a glimpse of the glory of God was seen that day at the recital. Our passions weren't given to us only to be neglected. Instead, they were given to us so that we could direct them to honour God. I hope that if you are still searching, that God may provide you a loving, genuine, and humble body of believers who can encourage you and build you up to use the gifts and passions you have been given!

KCCC from what i know had a lot of issues back when you were a part of it. Im currently a part of KCCC but our name changed to soon movement and the non dating rule is removed. The non dating rule was implemented because leaders believed that if soonjangs or disciplers dated then they would be distracted from being able to fully focus on God and whoever they were discipling. I hope you see this David! Its great to hear that you are going to church!

OMG! My dad did the same thing. He was the youth minister at St. George's Catholic Church in South Side Stockton.

Since you brought up the volleyball I thought I'd bring up the fact that a Korean church comes to our reservation every year. There's probably a lot of Korean Churches in Sacramento but this one is called Cross Point. I went the first time over 10 years ago then was gone for years and happened to be out there for a tribal ID last year. So I had some food and hung out with my kids, they give haircuts and do nails so my daughter got a haircut, they were nice people 😊.

Personally, the only church i would go to is the Church of Joemalia with Pastor David lol. Another great episode guys.

Insightful peaceful conversation. And both of you didn't have that certain tenseness in the atmosphere when ppl usually discuss these things. Rn I'm on a journey of really getting close to God. I always heard talk to God and get an intimate relationship with him. The things that kinda made me hesitate from him were others interpretations of The Bible. What God had said to them that didn't sit right with my spirit. Then them saying what they were told was meant it was for everyone or the final truth. I believe God can speak to you and guide you in many ways. However, it's his journey with you. I had to learn that esp this past month. Like maybe I'm meant to hear sermons and words of God from others but not everything they say has 100% be it. I have to have my own discernment, my own research and questions of God, and believe what he's telling me personally in my spirit. I haven't found an in person church. Rn I'm following "Transformation Church" (You may even know it David) online on KZread. I really like it so far, I like the fact they don't constantly mention tithing and if you do want to tithe ask God if it is so. I wish I really did thst with this other ministry b4 I sent an offering, I lowkey even kinda got a sign not to and it didn't feel right. I like how if I really want to I can watch several videos on KZread of ppl who have the same questions I do about God or Jesus. Or other resources/references to hear varying interpretations. There's many versions of The Bible, debate over which ones has more accuracy, did man God say that or was it skewed by man, and all these things that give me more confusion. So really just having the faith to God lead me to what I need to know is part of the journey. Thanks for this ep.

Somebody once told me, "Church is like a garage for the people who are spiritually broken." It's not a place where you shun people who aren't Christian or have different beliefs than you, it's where those people should be welcomed and be able to find a community that care about them despite all that.

Perfect statement from Joe: That people use religion to force their own ideals and then act as if your challenging God. I grew up in a independent baptist church. Not as fanatical as westboro but they would probably get along well. They made up a ton of crazy rules and nonsense. You can't wear this, you can't listen to music with drums, or loud instruments. I am a Christian. I agree wtih Joe, in that I went through a phase where I considered being an atheist. Why? I resented my experience in church. Ultimately, I read the bible. I read the New Testament. To be a Christian is to be a follower of Jesus. I like Jesus, yet i don't like the practices of a lot of hypocrite Christians. I learned to separate my experience from who I believe Jesus is. My independent baptist church, Keyword "independent" didn't believe in associating with other non independent baptists. Southern Baptists are going to Hell, landmark baptists? going to hell. Methodists? hell. Catholics? hell In fact, to be a Catholic is to be worse than an atheist! In their view an atheist has a better chance of making it into heaven than a catholic! If you don't use the 1611 King James bible? Hell! NIV or ESV version? Hell! The independent baptist church split off from the southern baptist church because the southern baptist church was "too liberal and progressive" Many southern baptists don't even believe in dancing. Independent baptist is not worldwide. It's mainly in america. Less than 2% of Americans identify as Independent baptist. Apparently only a small portion of people in the world (2% Americans born after 1800 are going to heaven)

Abc yup, to be Christian is to be a follower of Christ. I think thats the common denominator for the Christian faith, roman catholics, eastern orthodox, protestants and its various denominations, they are followers of Christ. And that i believe puts them to a path to salvation.

Joe it’s crazy you were SDA. It honestly was shocking to hear you talking about camp meetings, Loma Linda University, private SDA schools, and Ellen G White. I grew up SDA and never thought there would ever really be a public figure that I looked up to that even knew about the religion. Idk man it felt good to hear about it from you. Thanks for sharing

Karaokes are everywhere here in the Philippines. It's like out of 10 families, 9 families own a karaoke. And almost everyone knows how to sing af.

Y'all are the best for this episode. I feel like religion is such a taboo subject, but with the advancement in technology and overall knowledge, religion is nothing but an outdated tax free business. They're great for establishing morals, but at a certain point you realize that being identified to a certain ideology doesn't determine if you'll be a good person or not.

I liked this deep talk about religion. No ragrets.

I went to a seventh day adventist church and the sisiter church was a Korean one. It goes to show that not all baptist or protestant or seventh day adventist churches are the same. My experience with seventh day adventist is a lot different from Joe's. First off I was not christan in the beginning. When I was 14 or 15 we had a bible study teacher who came to our home. He grew up baptist however, he left the faith and got into a lot of trouble. Drinking and drugs. Some how or another he came back but he started asking a lot of questions that nobody had answers to. Also they looked down upon asking questions in the first place. He entered into the seventh day adventist church later on. Then he made his own church. He was the type to ask questions and take any questions from anybody as long as the genuinely wanted to know. And if he didn't know an answer he would admit it. He didnt Lead people on. However, I had a sort of falling out with his church. See I take a lot from the seventh day adventist but I declare myself non denominational. To get baptized you had to believe in Ellen g white and lo this extra stuff. I did not agree with that. As well as I didnt want to say Ellen g white was a prophet and all this. I mean she could have been but I have no way of knowing that. Also I dont believe in getting baptized into a church. So I left.

Ha I'm one of your Minnesota viewers and your guys 35-40 degree weather is like shorts and tee shirt weather for us. So I do wish I could be in California right now especially because we are getting yet another snow storm and getting 8 inches

At the end of the day it's not about other people's relationship with God... it's about your own relationship with God. Don't follow people because they will fail you bc we're all human, try your best to follow God. Read in the Bible for answers, not only going with what others say.

That's actually crazy because the church that I go to in Indonesia does not even have a offering basket at all, if you feel moved and want to give, do what you want and every month they need atleast $200,000 just for operations as they run many schools, orphanages, mission trips, and have to feed 5,000 people a month which are under their care, 3 meals a day and alot of the staff in the church gets underpay. Its just sad that in the US, there are better facilities than a third world countries but those facilities and extra funding is not used to benefit more of the people that are in need of it.
