I ran into Johnny Damon on the streets of Toronto when he was playing for the Yankees. I gave him a shoutout “hey Johnny” I had a Rasta coloured Yankees hat on, not sure if he saw it but he gave me a friendly wave. The guy seemed like an absolute legend. I got the vibe he was a cool guy and his old lady was ridiculously beautiful.

I will always love Johnny Damon, no matter what. His g7 slam is one of my best baseball memories ever.

What was so strange was seeing him without the Beard. I will never forget the 04 Redsox team. What a memorable postseason.

I had center field seats watching Johnny play my blue Jays. My friend and I had signs saying "Johnny =sellout" and my friend yells "why'd you do it?" (Strictly for lols. F the red Sox). Johnny looked at us and with a grin mimed "bags of money". We stopped chirping. That's hero status right there.

As a Yankee fan, I was in shock when Johnny Damon came to NY. I didn’t see that coming and he just fit right in immediately with the Yankees. That steal he did from second to third base when no one was covering third in the World Series was such a veteran move. As for Red Sox fans, I would love to hear any of you say you would turn down a four year $54 million dollars offer to play for the Yankees. Of course, you would be lying.

I am a Sox fan and I agree with you. Especially because he was an "older guy" and needed to lock in a deal. I get it, it's a business. Gotta do what ya gotta do. Also the Sox ownership are a bunch of penny pinching billionaires who have seemingly made one bad decision after another. I have completely lost respect for them since the Mookie debacle.

Played on a bunch of travel teams, sacrificed my social life, played in middle school, made it to varsity in 8th grade; played on varsity all the way through 12th grade. Was offered a full ride to play for the Tar Heels, but because I lived in New York, my parents didn't want me to go so far from home. They restricted me to an 8 hour drive (it was a 14 hour drive) for whatever frickin reason. So I wound up playing baseball for some no name D3 college in Massachusetts. Then after I graduated, I decided to hang up my cleats and enlist into the Army. Now I'm sitting here in school debt kicking myself in the ass for listening to my parents and not taking a FULL RIDE to play for the Tar Heels. Who knows, I might've been in the minors or majors right now. Guess I'll never know. Point is: if in some alternate reality, I decided to disobey my parents and go to North Carolina. And I got a call from my cross town rival Yankees, or my rival team Nationals; two teams that I hate and CANNOT stand.... And they were the only two teams in front of me literally handing me 90% of my dream, I'd take that shit and run with it faster than ever.... Then worry about getting my other 10% later (playing for the Mets). So don't tell me you wouldn't take an offer if it meant fulfilling your dream to play professional baseball making millions. Sure as shit beats being a lower enlisted in the Army........ 😂

GM's and owners treat players like commodities (which they are) all day long, but the minute a player treats himself like a commodity, all of a sudden it's "dishonorable" or "unsportsmanlike" or "greedy" or some other BS. "How dare you, Johnny! I used to _clap_ for you!" Get over it. Pro athletes have a finite amount of time to cash in on their slowly and steadily declining physical prowess while the sport steadily gets faster and more physically demanding. You also have a finite amount of time to cash in on your desk job, but a "thumb injury" won't get you laid off next year, and you have decades to climb the corporate ladder. Average MLB career length is 5.6 years. Basically, every single guy in here whining about "Judas" would also immediately take a 67% raise to do the exact same job at a different company.

@Trevor Forever He was still worth about 4.5 WAR, which made him something like a top-20 player in the AL, while not being in the top-30 in salary. I wouldn't say Damon was a bargain, and for a cash-strapped team like Oakland he probably wasn't worth investing in. But for Boston, it was a fair deal.

@Trevor Forever Totally agree on how the movie is not good at recounting the actual history. As for the Peter Brand comment on Damon, I had to rewatch the scene. He says that Damon's got a good glove, decent leadoff hitter, can steal bases, but not worth the money Boston offered him. I think it's fair to say it's not worth it for Oakland to spend that money on Damon, because they simply don't have the cash, but the scene makes Damon look like an overpaid, overrated player, and that's totally unfair to Damon IMO. Too much of the movie (and some of the book) is about emphasizing Beane's brilliance it had to make it seem like Boston's signing of Damon was a mistake that Oakland was too smart to make.

All those years with the Yankees and Johnny's greatest Yankee Stadium moment is still the grand slam he hit as a Red Sox in Game 7

Damon was definitely a fan favorite in Boston. At my first Red Sox game, he hit a walk off single against the Pirates during 2005. From then on, he was my favorite player. I was heartbroken when he went to the Yankees, but I still had a lot of respect for Damon even afterwards. Thanks for the memories, Johnny.

He’s misremembering a little bit, the 119-loss Tigers were a couple years before Damon was a free agent, in 2005 they lost 91 games but had just hired Leyland and had some very good talent. Were they expected to challenge world champion Chicago? Not really, but they were definitely supposed to be better. Of course they ended up shattering all expectations, beating Damon’s Yankees (probably the most star-studded Yankee offense ever) and going to the World Series.

Damon is a very friendly person met him and his wife at the hotel where I was working and I was restocking back the bar so while he was entering he saw me carrying like a case of beer an seeing Theo was more boxes he offered to help me, so we and him started talking and his wife Michelle and I was joking with him and told him Jeter wanted back his ring and he just smile and told me Jeter is a nice guy. And this was in the Caribbean and Jeter himself was also on the Island at that same time because I met him before I met Damon but Damon stayed in the hotel where I was working not Jeter, don't know why I'm really telling this story I guest it's because I have personally work around so many celebs through out my life and he was one of the most genuine person I ever met, wish you and you family all the best my friend.

I remember being a big Damon fan when I was 6 in 2005. Even when he went to the Yankees, he was still my favorite. So much so, I actually got a Damon Yankees shirt. Sure some of teachers & classmates didn't take too kindly to it, I didn't care. I was only of fan of Damon, not the Yankees.

I really wish players were aloud to clear the air as to why they signed with a team, especially a rival. It would really help ease the anger and frustration the fans feel and instead of getting upset at a player, they'll understand them and would probably feel a certain way towards ownership.

You know that one item they always report when a guy signs? Something with a number. Oh yeah, money. That's why they sign with a team.

This is why more fans have to realize that players are just people like everyone else. Yeah, they’re famous and make more money, but we all would be tempted to go to a business that’s known for bringing success and money. Also the fact is that Sox fans never really understood that Johnny didn’t have that many options in this case and Boston was being shady so he took the best deal he could find. He’s just a guy looking out for himself at the end of the day

WHY??? Ellsbury was better and he was expendable. Everyone in Boston knew he wasn't coming back. Damon, if you haven't noticed, wasn't loyal to ANY team he played for. Lol he expected the Red Sox to dedicate their entire 2005-2006 offseason to re-signing him, and the team was like “buddy, you’re an aging outfielder with no arm and who sometimes hits for average and rarely hits for much power. We’ve got better options.” Then they went on to win the WS just 2 years later with a much better CF. This guy always thought he was so much better than he actually was.

@@AtomWeaver8 Maybe. I dont know. I will say this much though. Since John Henry purchased the franchise, he and Larry Lucchino HAVE turned the Boston Red Sox into the model franchise. Since 2004 they have the most WS wins & I think the second highest number of playoff appearances behind ST. Louis, though I might be wrong on that, but I do know theyre up there in playoff appearances also. All while stuck in a division with a Yankees franchise with bottomless pockets. Yes the Sox can spend ALOT and even exceed the luxury threshold, & even lead the league in spending for a season or two. But they cant maintain it and alot of why they became the top spender recently is because the Yankees decided to follow the Sox blueprint to spend some and develop, rather than just spend, spend, spend. The Sox just cant match NY in spending over a long term, and are going to have to make the tough call and let some good players, even HOFers walk once in a while. So again I dont know what EXACTLY the front offices reasoning was, but I have noticed they are often demonized. In spite of turning a once hopeless Boston franchise into the most successful franchise in baseball since 2004. I remeber being a 10 year old Red Sox fan living in NYS and trying to get on the school bus to hear all of the uglies scream ha ha METS! I remeber the disappointment of 1990, 1995, 1998, 1999 & believing the franchise was toast when they were up for sale before Henry bought them. I remeber wanting to mug Grady Little and find out who bribed him to put Pedro back in for the 7th. I remeber wanting to brick my tv by nights end of the 2003 ALCS. I remember wishing someone would snap Jeters forearm so he couldnt do that annoying fist pump anymore. I remeber when it SUUUUUUUUCKED to be a Boston Red Sox fan. So yeah, I love the current Red Sox front office and ownership. And I say that with no sarcasm(except for maybe Jeters forearm, I didn't actually mean that part)...

The Sox have won four World Series in the last twenty years while the yanks have managed just one. The Sox have won two in the last eight years while the yanks last ring was twelve years ago. I’d say apples to apples The Sox have been better at rebuilding.
