I love the fact that Norm seems to genuinely love it when a joke fails. It's like he's deeply thrilled and happy to see the audience not enjoying it.

I think he's always telling jokes that he wants to tell. That make him chuckle and not just conforming to what other people think is funny. The audience almost doesn't matter - but of course he loves having an audience for them not to matter to him. A funny zen kind of thing! He was great.

I felt like he liked telling jokes that were his; and if they didn't work, he knew they weren't for everyone. He just said Oh well and kept going - it never bothered him because he just loved being himself.

Not even 2 minutes in he's having fun trolling his friend (who's a Harvard grad) about his assistant, making Conan look like a privileged diva for a laugh "yeah, I told you, what's her last name? *evil smirk*". After watching Conan for decades, it's clear that his visits with Norm were truly special. In this video, Conan laughs in ways and makes faces that i've never seen anyone else elicit. No matter how big the laugh with other people, he always keeps a modicum of control. Not with Norm. Norm had this way of building the long, subtle humor that felt more like an experience than an incident. By the end of this one, Conan was giggling like a baby who couldn't comprehend exactly why he's laughing. It bubbles up from the inside. So good.

Norm was great at telling awkward jokes. On his free time he liked to go to Seaworld and feed the baby dolphins. He was really a laid back cool fella off stage. He definitely served a youthful porpoise.

@@hv3115 yeah yeah, in today's world : not owning the dog house is a matter of pride, being a teacher is the most difficult job, Oscar Pistorius is a scholar and a gentleman, pornography is an art and Larry Flint is a polymath.

I always was struck by how handsome Norm really was, particularly in his earlier years...his eventual weight gain, and also the horrible effects of his cancer, took away some of his looks...but, I mean, ever check out his dead-on impression of Burt Reynolds?...He had the same look/level of male beauty that Burt had!
