@@mikecantreed And he majored in History and Literature, Norm graduated high school 2 years early and was in college for Mathematics before he dropped out to pursue comedy. Hell I would say Norm probably has more knowledge of literature than Conan considering the references he puts into some of his jokes. Norm was always the smartest person in the room when it comes to entertainers and artists.

This is my version of that. (...) I told a story about my father telling a joke at my sister’s wedding, and then Don Rickles just went off on my father being crazy, and it was the high point of my father’s life. As brilliant as Norm was, this was pretty obvious and Conan saw it instantly. "Do something with that you freak" and the long pause after was merely placing the ball on the tee for Norm.

"Do something with THAT one you freak!" Conan had to know there was a 0% chance Norm was gonna let that fly without the final word.

Nothing particularly wrong with Courtney, but there's a clip where she does typical celebrity interview but Al Franken is there instead and he tried to be funny. I might use that one on "replay" as my sleep tone. Night and day difference.

Around 3:25 when Norm makes his hand gesture to Conan to keep moving after his interruption is what makes Norm gold 😂😂😂

Norm was a force of nature. Complete anarchy in this interview setup. I revisit this segment from time to time just to cheer myself up. Thank you.

and TBH I've always skipped over this one because I thought it would just be a celebrity interview. And maybe Ms. Thorne-Smith thought the same. This is yet another CLASSIC McDonald guest spot on Conan, and much to Courtney's credit, she got on b hard immediately while still a Pro. I've already watched it three times in a row. Excellent TV.

It shows the genius of Norm that they don't pick a clip of his interview, but a clip of someone ELSE'S interview because he was such a genius, he could improv the most hilarious lines on the spot.

The absolute greatest talk show segment in the history of television. I saw it when it originally aired and never forgot it. Years later I found it available on KZread. I watch it a few times a year and it never disappoints. Norm MacDonald was a genius and Conan was his ideal foil.

I hate that it took me so long to realize Norms sharp wit and talent. His voice used to make me think he was slow and boring so I never really gave him a chance. I am currently making up for my ignorance and enjoying every moment of it. RIP Norm. You were special

I’m pretty much in the same boat. Being Canadian l’m a bit embarrassed that l discovered his comedy so late, but one thing l do have over most people is the knowledge of his theme song. It’s by a band called Doug and the Slugs, whose concept l saw while attending university. They never made it big, partly because the founder, who was also the singer Doug Bennett died fairly young, mid 50s l believe. Anyway l’m now driving everyone around me nuts with my obsession with Norm.

To this day, the "B-O-R-E-D" quip is THEE most creative, funniest, ad-libbed line I have ever heard in my life. And the reaction it received proves that. Original comedy is so utterly rare and there has never been anything like Norm Macdonald. This horribly straight edge worlds needs him so badly. R.I.P. Norm.

@@thegameguy208 You're not getting it dude. What makes it "creative" isn't the joke itself. This isn't like you hanging around the house playing a poker game with your buddies and saying it. He's on freakin national television with million of people watching, Conan puts him on the freakin spot and he comes up with that ln literally 2 seconds. This isn't to mention he didn't fuck up the timing or the delivery. And it's also not to mention that a guy who GETS PAID to produce comedy out of nothing jumped out of his chair. But hey, I guess some people have empathy and the ability to put themselves in someone elses shoes and someone elses moment and some don't. Please don't respond again without the proper amount of thought involved. Thanks.

And yes, he's on tv which adds some pressure, but its also his job to stand in front of a crowd and be funny. its a great joke with great delivery, but i think youre overhyping it lol

I love Norm...that's why we're here, of course! Although, they were piling on Carrot Top...but it was hilarious, so quick witted and funny! Sure, Carrot Top has a 70 million net worth, while Norm had a gambling addiction and passed away from cancer, sadly. And I mean no disrespect, it's just crazy how things work out. I love Norm and I hope his son Dylan is doing okay. A legend!

I'm no Carrot Top fan, but Courtney Thorne Smith was there to promote a movie, and they did the opposite and crapped all over it, which is why she and Conan are covering their faces while laughing because they know it's not cool to crap on a movie a guest is there to promote--which is funny. But Norm, as always, didn't care and just went for the jokes. I think I saw this back when it actually aired and it was soooo funny and still is. And to answer your other question, Carrot Top made his money through standup gigs, commercials, and I'm guessing shrewd investing? And then he put that towards steroids and got jacked.

I have two favorite Norm moments, this one and his appearance on Letterman right after he was fired from Weekend Update on SNL. It’s 100% hilarious but the “quisling” parts bring me to my feet every time.

Norm had some great moments on talkshows but he was the best on Conan, they had a great chemistry wish they would have done more together.

Norm was on my short list of names of favorite people, back in June when my son was born, in order to decide on a name. We went with Gavin (as in Gavin McInnes) but maybe the world wasn’t big enough for another Norman anyway.

I love how the entire time Andy just looks on in admiration at Norm, a master of his craft.

Conan really knew how to take a step back and let the guest land great jokes. Norm was like Robin Williams in that you just had to unleash them.

Every time their conversation started to die down or reach an end, Norm would come in with the funniest remark possible. The best moment in talk show history; absolutely special and timeless.

This just hit me for the first time, even though I've watched countless times. Norm admits he saw her give an interview the night before on a competing show. He basically knew what she was going to talk about. He may have even heard the title already. But he still delivered it all like an absolute pro for our enjoyment.

What are the odds norm warms up the crowd to carrot top in his own segment... Unless he had seen her interview the night before and heard her mention she's in a movie with carrot top. This whole theory has blown my mind. At first I didn't like it because it took away a bit of the magic for me, but now I almost appreciate it more.

That’s how I felt when Norm teased me. It didn’t even occur to me that it could possibly be negative. I was beside myself. I was there to promote Chairman of the Board. I was not thrilled about having to do it, so when Norm took over, I’m like, Oh, thank you, God and Norm Macdonald. It was a blessing. Look - had I thought that Chairman of the Board was my path to an Oscar, I might have been offended. I did not. So it was a joy to be teased about it.
