Norm was an extremely intelligent, well-read guy and that comes across in interviews he did both as host and guest. The fact he never cared if he bombed (he'd work the bit ever harder if that happened) made him legendary, because you knew he trusted his material and was going to ride that pony off into the sunset. I was used to seeing his brother Eric reporting on the CBC, and it didn't come as a great surprise that Norm would likewise be smart as a whip. Back when he first started hosting "Weekend Update" he'd suddenly make jokes about anal rape in prison, and did so in such a casual manner that you knew this guy was going to go for the jugular without any regrets. I think his delivery changed how "Update" functioned. The news of his passing was understandably a gut shock to everyone, and I think if people had heard Norm died from having the biggest balls in comedy they'd pause and say "Yeah, I could see that." Farewell to a legend.

I genuinely believe he stuck with his material because he knew it was funny, not because he trusted the material, but because he built his whole career on making *himself* laugh and being talented enough to make others laugh with him. If the audience didn't find it funny, he took the time to show them that actually, yes, it was, because Norm found it fucking hilarious.

Norm Macdonald could do a bit that would leave the crowd rolling, but if you repeated it for your friends at the bar, you'd just sound like an idiot. Even if you just read it in print, the bit where Norm described the unspeakable crimes of Albert Fish and then ended it with "He was a real jerk!" That's not funny. Norm sat in a bomb like it was a hot jacuzzi. Norm didn't tap-dance to please Barbara Walters, or an NBC executive, or THE COUNTRY'S MOST NOTORIOUS MURDERER. Norm MacDonald taunted a MUDERER AS THE TRIAL WAS HAPPENING. Sorry for the caps, but I lived in that time, and it really was crazy and ballsy, like Evel Knievel. Norm MacDonald was brave, hilarious, and unrelenting. Norm defied cancel culture before that was even a thing; in that the "powers that be" rejected him, but he couldn't be stopped. NORM DEFIED CANCER. The general population didn't adore him like he deserved, but that man ALWAYS got his laugh. It could be one guy in the room howling, and you just knew it landed where it was intended. Late night hosts got him. WE got him. Norm loved us, and we loved him back. Some joke; somewhere; Norm touched us all.

Bill Burr is one of the most genuine comedians out there. Keep in mind that comedians need angles to make some jokes work but he pretty much is his own angle. He can absolutely wreck a person, group, or concept. He can also have moments like this where he elevates people that deserve it and it is just as good.

Good job, Bill. This is the comedy equivalent of Gord Downie passing away. You figure you’ve still got a lot of time but then life reminds you again that tragedies strike when least expected. There's I admire about the way he died tho. That is, if I understood correctly. I've seen a few clip of him saying he doesn't like when people try and Garner sympathy through their illness, and that he respects, and considers brave, a person who takes it privately and doesn't burden others with his weakness. He actually friggin stuck to that and applied it to himself. At the very least you have to respect that

Norm and Bill both have the magic to be just as funny while not doing standup. His death hurts, I loved seeing him become more jaded and self deprecating as he got older and heavier, but also his weird inspiration for the old timey joke. It’s like it was rarely ever about the jokes, but always about the delivery and attitude. RIP to one of the greatest. Thanks Bill. ❤️

I always had a feeling it was norm cuz I could just hear him saying “I’m not norm” but then to find out it was him was awesome. I’m glad I made him chuckle or smile during his difficult time.
