    It was super interesting. Stephen is a devout Catholic, and a Sunday school teacher, and the tragic deaths of his father and brothers when he was a child obviously deeply affected him. It was a little strange to see him get caught on his back foot a bit here -- John's just trying to be funny and irreverent, but they were clearly getting close to some stuff that makes Stephen emotional and it seems like neither knew what to do with that. I love them both.

You both loved, lost, chose to honor your brother, and I'm still unsure how to tell you.. I love you, I'm sorry, you're beautiful"! Nah.. But from someone raised roman Catholic.. Wow. This hit me. I'm the ugly duckling. I do not worship God in church. I'm devout in my multi spiritual dimensions. Carry the Catholic cross and guilt wherever I go, I have no prejudices towards beliefs/religions/spiritual endeavours. I know that what molds us from infancy, makes us separate. It's when we over come our beautiful differences we see one another with respect, and that's amazing. I honestly don't care about the physical scars from not being true, I just care about how I treat you, and you treat you. #findlove #worldpeace

    Stephen needs invervewees who interview him. I think that's part of the reason this went so sell. John kind of takes over the interview ad holds his own. Colbert's interviews go poorly when his guests are passive and leave him to draw out the information or stories. Colbert isn't good at that yet. He'll often say things that leave no room for response or discussion. I think it's because he has done interviews for years, but as his character who existed TO make people uncomfortable and to dominate the conversation.

    And now he's divorced that Jewish woman, much to the surprise of all of his fans. I'm only 35 (so I've only been Jewish for 35 years) but in my experience it's NOT very "One of us" to fall off the drug-and-alcohol wagon, come out of rehab, & divorce the woman who stood by you through everything. That said, a second cousin of mine - also age 35 - was recently divorced by the husband she'd nursed through late-stage colon cancer. After years near-death going though experimental treatment, this guy was miraculously given a clean bill of health... and the first thing he did was leave his wife. So, abandoning the person who was there for you during the worst times is (I'm ashamed to say) something Jews apparently do to each other, too (it's not bad behavior reserved for Catholic men married to Jewish women).

    I love these interviews with people Colbert genuinely wants to spend time with. You see them go off on tangents and think “Oh do I need to let this brilliant person do an instant bit” so it becomes an English Politeness standoff until they remember “Oh crap you came here to test material” and then they have to cram in what was actually prepared. We love our tall child. We wish him all the best.

    Brian Sexton I think a lot of Jewish celebrities are atheist in their beliefs (Sarah Silverman and Seth Rogen, for example), but because "Jewish" is both a religious affiliation and an ethnicity, you can be an atheist Jew. So when they say they're Jewish, their referring to their ethnicity, heritage, or culture- not their beliefs.

  • @whatsgoingonwhy9096

    @whatsgoingonwhy9096

    7 жыл бұрын

    Catholics traditionally, like Jews, say once you're Catholic you're Catholic for life(whether you want to be or not). That's often why its a ehhh who knows situation for lapsed Catholics. In fact the term "lapsed Catholics" is a term used by practicing Catholics to refer to those baptized and confirmed in the Church who no longer believe or have gone elsewhere for their religious life. For Jews it does seem to blur the line into ethnicity and paternal/maternal inheritance so they would have less of a problem just saying yes Im a Jew even if they don't believe in God or a Soul etc... There is another interesting factor, in America especially, the school of Judaism known as Reform Judaism in which a person practices as a Jew in many different ways; from a very traditional manner based on the most orthodox Rabbinic beliefs all the way to creating their own idea of what God is, whether or not an eternal soul exists or not, rejecting the idea bodily resurrection, the historicity of the bible, the messianic age vs the messiah, etc..., while still being able to practice(or not) their Jewish faith in a temple or synagogue with a congregation. In fact for many, Reform Judaism really most resembles a somewhat more deistic/religious humanism rather than what people normally associate with Judaism. A lot of interesting theology, philosophy, and history behind that question

    Just to add on to what you said, as a Catholic we have to literally and formally request to not be Catholic in order for us to be considered non-Catholics, otherwise you're Catholic for life. So it's also probably like "ehhhh, well I haven't officially written to my Church to request that I not be considered a Catholic anymore... and I probably don't agree with certain aspects of the church, but I was raised as a cradle Catholic and still like some of the values and probably a lot of the social justice teachings, so... meh idk."
