John Huss (Jan Hus): the reformer who inspired Martin Luther

This film explores the geopolitical situation of the late medieval period wherein an enabled papacy, thanks to its projection of spiritual authority onto temporal powers, became increasingly political and corrupt. With the advent of climate change that caused the little ice age in the early 1300's, there followed the great famine of 1315 that killed a quarter of Europe's population, as well as causing a collapse of the livestock, grain supply and local economies for decades. Just as they began to recover, Europe was then hit by the Black Death (or Bubonic Plague) in 1346, which caused the death of upwards of half the remaining population. Labour shortages then caused peasant and working class unrest, as well as a growing sense that the end of the world was coming. Both they and the professors in the universities, squarely viewed the church, its endemic corruption and the scandal of first, the Avignon Papal "Babylonian Captivity" and then the subsequent Great Schism that saw multiple competing anti-popes, as being in need of serious reform. In England, John Wycliff began his series of tirades against the pope in Rome, while in Bohemia, nationalist stirrings by an oppressed Czech population led to a similar movement led by priest and university professor Jan Hus (or John Huss). His betrayal, eventual burning at the stake in 1415 and subsequent mass uprising by his Hussite followers set off shockwaves throughout Europe that would eventually lead Martin Luther, a hundred years later, to begin the Protestant Revolution.

Having spent many years reading up on the fascinating subject of history and having also spent many years travelling around the world visiting historical places such as battlesights, fortresses, castles, palaces as well as wandering around the old walls of such medieval towns like Rothenburg an de Tauber it is an absolute delight to listen to all your videos that add so much extra detail to the mostly facts from history books. Some of the sordid, but very much human attributes, with a generosity of your humour adds to the enjoyment. Your approximately one hour videos etc add lots of great information and is a wonderful revision for me. And once again it just shows the folly of man in general, greed, lust for power no matter the consequences and everything else associated with the intricacies of human behaviour all come out in your very interesting and informative shows. Keep up the good work. You will have no end of subject matter relating to this topic. Greetings from the Train Lord in South Australia.

What a docco!!! It literally opens the door into what happens next... Martin Luther through to Napoleon and all the European kerfuffele in between. I have never looked into central Europe's involvement into the schism but it did answer a few questions and ask a few more about how what got to where. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant deliverance of historical facts. I almost wish it was a video game to be able to be a part of it. Thanks for taking the time into making this, it is the small video producers that make the best content.

I was absolutely rivetted to this documentary. What a great champion of truth Jan Huss was, and what incredible courage he showed standing up to the Catholic church. He held his ground on his irrefutable points of contention "show me where in the Scriptures I am in error", and endured a horrific death. I don't know if I'd be so brave in his situation. I hope that I would. The Queen of Bohemia reminds me of Queen Katherine Parr, with her intellect and that she was drawn to the truth of Protestantism. I didn't know anything about Jan Huss before watching this, but I look forward to seeing him in heaven, and cheering for his faithfulness to the Lord Jesus when he stands before Him at the Bema Seat of Christ, and receives his rewards. The Popes on the whole were a disgrace. Those who weren't corrupt were mysteriously unalived. I was given Dave Hunt's book 'A Woman Rides the Beast' for Christmas, and it's engrossing. It describes the woman in scarlet riding the Beast in the book of Revelation....and I can't see how it's not the Catholic church.... she's drunk on the blood of the saints. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.🇦🇺

Awesome presentation. I wish you had included more nuance about indulgences. Indulgences did not prevent someone from going to hell. They provided a pool of merit that would shorten time in purgatory and thus speed up someone’s journey to paradise. The distinction is important. Under the Roman system, the mass, obedience to the pope and magistrates of the church, baptism, confession, professed faith in Jesus and good works were all necessary for salvation. but various other things could earn merit (such as buying indulgences).

Thanks for your support, and the enquiry- the other channel is Triarius Project- a channel that i started a few years ago as a support for divorced dads, on which i first published the Hospitaller video, and the Hercules video (albeit with a personal development twist). The former video was quite popular, and i so enjoyed making it, that i was motivated to create this channel, which gives me a creative outlet, and no end of pleasure to research. It seems to have resonated with a few people too, so i now spend all my spare time here rather than the other channel. I suppose most of what i had to say on that platform has been said, so i dont give it anywhere near the attention i do this one. Its funny how life takes you on a journey of twists and turns to a destination completely different from the one you set out on. But here we are, and I hope you derive some benefit from both of them.

A few comments. Indulgences, even in their worst abusive form, never got you out of hell. They shortened time in purgatory, conditional on the fact that you had already made a valid confession (which requires repentance) and received absolution. As far as only believing/practicing what is expressly stated in scripture: 1) the undivided Christian Church existed before the New Testament was compiled. You might say the Church wrote the scriptures, or at least decided which books were scripture and which were not. Scripture was never intended to be a catechism of all of the beliefs and practices of the Church. Consider John 16: "“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when the Spirit of truth has come, He will guide you into all truth," so Jesus is saying there is more truth than contained in the scriptures and fuller truth will be revealed by the Holy Spirit, 2) The idea that the meaning of scripture is "obvious" to any reasonably educated reader is refuted by the hundreds of Protestant sects that exist. The "Hussites" themselves ended up breaking into many other groups that were not in agreement with one another. At some point you cannot have unity without a single interpretive body that everyone agrees is authoritative. As far as each national Church having its own head vs one centralized head (eg., the Pope), it's worked reasonably well -- although far from perfectly -- with the Eastern Orthodox. (Although the patriarch of Constantinople is primus inter pares and has special authority that the other Churches lack.) As far as Hus's idea that that national head should be under the control of the king --- uh, not a very good idea. Unless you like the idea of Putin running the Russian Orthodox Church
