This is great to see a demo of this. I have a 14SB that I already had into the JD shop once this year but they didn't fix an issue I have with a slow leak the day after the mower ran all over the deck. I can alleviate the issue if I use the fuel shut off but I obviously forget to do this sometimes. I thought it was the vent tube on the carb but would it either be the rubber bowl gasket or the float needle value? It start on the first pull and runs just fine.

  • @jeffslawnmowerrepairandservice

it could be one of the float bowl gaskets, if it was flooding it would be hard to start when warm

The jet u first removed on top and outside body , the idle fuel jet, gets plugged from the smallest particle. I removed mine five different times and found stuff each time in the hole through the middle, that hole was smaller than the smallest tip cleaner I had so I removed a piece of copper strand from 22 gage stranded wire and it went thru. That hole can get plugged multiple times unless u change the fuel line and install inline fuel filter. When the jet is plugged the engine surges wildly and most certainly won't idle.

I have had good luck welding plastic using my soldering gun. While holding parts together as before it was broke melt the broke/cracked area and blend the melted halves together a little at a time. Don't stay in one spot to long or the plastic changes from to much heat and doesn't have its original strength. If ya have a soldering gun with a temp control then your gold. Just set temp a little hotter until it just melts the plastic enough it can be moved around as its heated.

Thanks for posting this. I still have a 14SB that I purchased new in 1993. It's been a great mower! I've ran into my first real problem though... The self propelled mechanism sporadically doesn't engage anymore? when i pull the handle it'll surge for a split second, but won't go anywhere. It also locks up the rear wheels to only go forward (still clicks when pushing forward), but when you pull backward, they just stay locked, regardless if the self-propelled handle is pulled or not. any ideas?

I am not that familiar with those drive systems. Similar rear wheel drive designs have external gears that get rusty or gummed up that drive the wheels and axle bearings that get rusty and dirty and need to be cleaned up and re greased. Hopefully the problem is not inside the transmission, some transmissions are not repairable.

Half moon pin with small spring that pushes it up has worn out on axial has worn out. Not difficult repair unless lack of grease over the years has caused a wobbled out slot. Just pay attention to how the other parts come out.

Just wanted to let ya know the mower surges because its lean on fuel. Meaning not enough. The plug will be gray color to confirm that. Also lean fuel will make engine run hotter.

Very good video. I have a JE75 with similar carb issues. I cleaned it and it ran fine for about one mowing. Then started running poorly and died. Can only get it to fire and run for a few seconds with choke on. So I think carb may have clogged again. I have seen suggestions that maybe putting on an inline gas filter would be a good idea. Any thoughts about that? But I've also read that these fuel lines may not be a standard size. Do you happen to know the size of the fuel line. Last question is whether you have tried any of the cheap after market carbs and how they work. Thanks very much.

you must also clean the fuel tank otherwise the problem will reoccur. Aftermarket cheap carburetors are terrible. 1/4 inch fuel line

Hope ya got it running, the factory carb is so easy to clean, nearly all the after market carbs I have used DO NOT perform like the factory. Don't know why but I never get the engine to idle like it should and sometimes it won't rev up like the factory. Like the machining of the air/fuel components are not done correct.

well i came across the problem as to why the guy threw this out the gas tank leaks gas all over..if i could get the top off i could probably fix it with soem opoxy or JB WEld the gas tanks themselves are like 70 bucks brand new so hardly worht it better off just welding it with JB weld...but i cant get the top off that nut is pretty much ruste don there WD-40 did nothing to loosen it up shame really and i dont have the gun to driv eit off fast im stuck with the old ratchet...im sure i can get soemone to get it off then it'd probably be an easy fix but im selling as is maybe seomone who has the tools can fix it up

  • @sonnyc3826

note to self the JB Weld sucks and is garbage dont use it ever..its a temporary solution to a permanent problem im sure as a veteran small engiones guy most know that but im new...i fixed the problem but there was still a small leak so to resell it i wanted to make it tip top so i agian took it apart and saw the leak and the JB weld just peeled right off that stuff is complete garbage...so i caved and just bought a new tnak at about 80 bucks plus shipping so 90 dollars for a freeking gas tnak which is way overpriced but if people know lawnmowers this thing is semi worht it as it should sell for more than the cost of the mower anyway its a good mower. just less profit but its going to be done right and good.
